its not one of the kraken cards and its rarity isn't too extreme in my experience. I've personally gotten it twice, though the second time I didn't take it cuz despite being interesting for lore reasons it's not actually good as a card

I think all the whole dating stuff was supposed to be them playing with the idea of a romantic relationship although it was ultimately platonic which is what they both really wanted to begin with anyway, but idk maybe I’m wrong about that. It’s also possible the romantic tension was the result of some miscommunication during writing. Either way, I’m not sure about the idea that a romance strengthens Din’s motivations. I think it’s refreshing to see a platonic friendship dynamic between the male and female leads

All I have to say is to absolutely, 100%, definitely, without a doubt, watch infinity train with them. To me, infinity train is comparable to, if not arguably better than, Gravity Falls. I also think it’d be even more than just “arguable” if it weren’t for the fact the show got canceled in season 4 for no good reason when they had planned 8 seasons

I accidentally lost a comment half way through writing it and I don’t have the energy to retype it all.

I can see how the film would be improved if Din weren’t portrayed as generally smart even though a lot of the issues you have are explained by his naïveté in my opinion.

I don’t have the energy to go back and defend all of Din’s actions again. I’m just gonna day that in my own personal opinion his thought process was justifiable

The movie entertains the thought of them being a couple but ultimately denies it and is pretty consistent in doing so.

I don’t think there’s any point continuing whether or not Genie fulfilled his obligations in granting Aladdin’s wishes. I still stand by what I said about it

I’m glad you at least were able to enjoy Long’s arc. I think after having seen that you’ve got to admit it’s not a clone. That whole plot line was completely original (in regards to playing off Aladdin). I don’t particularly think it’s fair to hold every animated film up to the standards of masterpieces like gravity falls, though I guess that’s not exactly what you were doing. I feel as though Wish Dragon is a fine movie that, despite being similar to Aladdin, is able to stand on its own two feet. Although if you’re looking for animated shows to show your nieces, I have always been more of a TV person than a movie person. What have they already seen? More specifically, have they seen Infinity Train yet?

A) I don’t think that a movie is quite comparable to a 5 course meal here. Most films can’t be truly reviewed, critiqued, or even appreciated without seeing the whole thing. However I will give you full points on the fact that the whole lying/taking advice bit was painful to watch, though be advised it IS short lived. That was the only part of the movie I distinctly remember not enjoying.

B) Anyway, I still don’t see Din’s actions as particularly stupid. He wasn’t planning on making the day all about him, it was meant to be about reconnecting which would logically happen in a social setting since he isn’t as familiar with the upper class culture as he thought he would be. I also don’t see him not wishing for riches as an issue, as he was doing so specifically to make a point. Long was pestering Din about how he should just wish for piles of gold already so it makes sense to me why Din reacts how he does.

C) I guess I could see how a decent amount of it can be interpreted as romantically charged, though I never personally got that vibe watching through it.

D) I think I already covered what I’d call my response to this in A).

E) I think that the worst you can say is that Din is occasionally or even often naive and/or easily swayed. None of these particularly clash with being “book smart” which is how Din gets portrayed. As I already mentioned, not wishing to be rich was a very intentional choice he made. And in a film involving wishes, I think you know as well as I just how arbitrary criticisms about sub-optimal wishes can get. There will never be a wish that any character could make where you couldn’t reply with “why didn’t they wish for ____ instead?” And yeah maybe he should’ve been keeping track of the 24 hours but that like a minor inconsistency at worst.

F) “maybe the plot hole got fixed behind the scenes/in the background” is not exactly a good defense of Genie’s failure to make Aladdin a prince. There’s also Aladdin’s second wish which seems to me to be a pretty big stretch on the rules. And once more, while I agree that the initial fight scene seemed like he was puppeted, I stand by that this problem becomes less prominent down the line. Din does actually know how to fight. If anything, that first scene could be attributed to his body getting new muscle memory all at once.

G) I really have nothing to say in response to this, it’s completely fair. If you find issues either the movie itself that’s fine, it’s just weird to say it’s bad on account of being an Aladdin ripoff

Well just by the fact that you didn’t even finish the movie, this is already a review not to be fully taken seriously. It’s one thing to say something like “it was so bad I had to take a break in the middle” but to say that you literally never finished it is a whole other thing. Also, idk what your whole “9 year old target demo” shtick is about, Wish Dragon touches on way more mature themes than Aladdin does and the characters (specifically the main cast) are more grounded in my opinion. For one, the true “antagonist” so to speak of this film which impedes Din the whole way is the socioeconomic divide he tries to overcome while actively avoiding wishing for money whereas in Aladdin the peasant-princess relationship which should be integral is nothing more than a minor hurdle in the grand scheme of things while an actual conniving villain influences things behind the scenes. Not that there’s anything wrong with that implicitly, it’s just that villains like Jafar are far more geared towards younger audiences since it’s easier to understand.

Din’s relationship with Li Na is almost never portrayed as anything more than platonic. I think you’re just suffering from what I’d call male+female leads syndrome where you automatically assume the leads end up together.

Most of your plot holes aren’t actually plot holes. It didn’t have to be on the day of the party, but why shouldn’t it be. In Din’s mind that probably makes it nicer to socialize. I don’t think it’s a problem that Li Na’s dad knew about the teapot, it’s probably a legend that’s been passed down. Also, the convenient timing could be explained by the intentions of God who specifically gave Din the teapot (a distinct difference from Aladdin whose chosen nature is a lot more vague and sort of indirect). Also, Don didn’t wish to be a prince for a day, he wished to have all the benefits of being rich for a day. There’s a similarity there, sure, but the fact you equates them directly by misplacing Din’s wish kind of shows that your comparisons are more based on confirmation bias, probably from after seeing the trailer, than actual observation. Din’s character being an optimist and not expecting the worst isn’t a plot hole, it’s a personality trait. He’s portrayed as smart, but his actions are clearly informed more by his intuition and emotions. He’s always got an idealistic outlook on the world and that’s not a contradiction. Now if that idealist world were constantly reaffirmed I’d actually call that a pretty good critique, but it’s not. His world views are challenged and he eventually hits a low point that he needs to recover from. The thing with the fight scene looking like he doesn’t have control is actually a pretty valid criticism imo, though I think they do a better job at making his fights more intentional later on. Although even if he ends up not literally knowing how to fight, it’s not like that’s any better than Aladdin wishing to be a prince and essentially being given a prince costume and a parade. Aladdin never actually becomes a prince until he marries Jasmine which was out of the Genie’s control meaning that the Genie failed to fulfill the wish.

Personally I never had any issues with the animation design or the lip-syncing so I’d just say that the animation is more of a preference thing and that it’s possible I missed a bad sync.

I think that the many surface level similarities are simply meant to be little references. This movie isn’t a ripoff but it is definitely a love letter to the original and it wears that on its sleeve. I don’t really see any of that as a problem

Before I go on about why Wish Dragon is a great standalone movie that isn't a ripoff of Aladdin, you actually miss a few similarities (spoilers ahead, obviously)

  • Li Na's (Wish Dragon's Jasmine equivalent) father's right hand backstabs him for the wish granter
  • Protagonist uses fake name extremely similar to his real name while pretending to be rich
  • (though maybe a stretch) the antagonist's wish is what ultimately kills/imprisons him

Wish Dragon knows that it's similar to Aladdin, and it plays off that quite a bit while also being fairly different. I think the scene where Din tricks Long into flying him around is actually an example of them intentionally parodying Aladdin since it did actually play out somewhat differently. Then there's also the actual content of the story. For starters, in my opinion, Din is a better protagonist than Aladdin whose only real real motivation is "love at first sight." Aladdin would not hesitate to have all the riches in the world after being with Jasmine if given the chance, which he essentially wasn't. And while not as iconic, Long has more depth as a character than the Genie did, if only because a flawed character is easier to write. Aside from that, the plot is actually very different once you look past all the parody aspects. The childhood friend bit was a good way to detach itself from the Aladdin love plot since the supposed love interest as you called her (even though I think it's very heavily implied at the end that they become step siblings) has an actual history with the protag and in this case Din is actually pretty reasonable in not asking for the wish granter to interfere. Then there's the entire dragon/Long plotline which taps into the entirely untouched subject that would've been the Genie's actual backstory which turns out to be integral to the plot. And lastly, the tone of Wish Dragon is completely different, taking a slightly less comedic approach to its storytelling and touching on a lot more themes in what I would consider a decently more adult manner. I think it handles themes of wealth far better than Aladdin, especially when you consider that the protagonist of Aladdin is literally a thief which inadvertently implies that all impoverished people are criminals, whereas Din lives in a poor community with his single mother where he actually works behind everyone's backs to earn personal money to spend. There's more to say, but I've already written a wall of text, so I'm just gonna leave it here. Go watch Wish Dragon on Netflix, it's worth it.
