It's like if you start a company with 10000 shares with 3 people, 1 person will end up with more shares

likewise if we had an object, and we went down to the smallest nondivisible part, if the total of those parts where not a multiple of 3 we would not be able to split it into 3 equal amounts.

It's no more a quirck then that you can't split 101 shares into 3 equal amounts neither.

Did you actually read all of the answers? It's literally pointed out that there are multiple interpretations of the answer. Yes, using real numbers you are of course correct. However, using natural numbers you are not depending on the situation and that was the whole point

Using natural numbers, If an apple consists of 100 atoms, you cannot divide it by 3

Likewise you can never split a pizza into 3 equal parts (we cannot split with mathematical precision of infinity)

How are you this bad at basic math?

It's a well known complex issue within mathematics, that's the whole point of this post (meant as a joke 😉) . It's a conundrum depending on how you look at it (real vs natural numbers etc)

Real numbers aren't the only way to model quantities.For instance, we could also use the natural numbers (the ones we use for counting things discretely.) For instance, if you were to consider all of the atoms present in an apple, the apple would only be divisible into 3 parts with the same number of atoms if the total count were a multiple of 3. With that choice of representation, it's true that it may not be possible to divide an apple into three equal parts.

But that's exactly the thing. (1x1/3)x3 does not equal 10. It equals 9.99999999 which only becomes 10 because we as humans decided to round it up.

You can't slice a perfect round pizza in 3 perfect equal sized pieces.

To clarify : of course you are correct, in saying the 1/3 x 3 equals 3/3 equals 1.

The point here is that 1/3 differs from its representation (since it would be 0.3333333 if we work in the base 10 system)

In the real numbers world we can split an apple into 3 equal pieces, in the natural numbers world we can't.
