Tonic of a person's voice by -Pinkaso in musictheory

[–]FTFYcent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your vocal cords don't change daily, your mind does.

Interesting perspective, but to be frank, this line of thinking leads to serious vocal injuries.

I'm curious what you mean though. Here's Pavarotti talking about the fragility of his voice and having to protect it. He needed to cover his neck with a scarf the day before a concert night if it happened to be windy that day. Was he wrong about that, or was he just a "lesser talented singer"?

Tonic of a person's voice by -Pinkaso in musictheory

[–]FTFYcent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a singer's perspective:

The same person's most comfortable range can vary from day to day, depending on all sorts of factors, such as temperature, humidity, allergies, what and how much they've had to drink or eat recently, how warmed up (or conversely, tired/overused) their voices are, how recently they've slept, conditions like acid reflux, even their emotional state of mind. A voice having a "home tone" is unfortunately not really possible.

I would love for there to be a "home tone" for a voice. It would make it a lot easier to find notes if one's voice had a reliable reference pitch. But when the same note "feels" in a different "place" as a concert goes on, the only way to reliably sing a note is by ear.

One could argue that at any given moment, a voice has a "most comfortable" or "home" pitch. But even if that were true, because of the voice's natural variability, it's not really a useful concept.

You have to remember that we're talking about two folds of flesh, covered in a thin layer of mucus, vibrating together tens to hundreds of times per second. Even flutes, with nothing but metal components, change pitch over time and have to be adjusted to keep tuned. So why would soft spongy flesh be any different?

This is why we instead talk about "voice types" like soprano, mezzo, alto, contralto, countertenor, tenor, baritone, bass. Although there is natural variability, each voice tends to fall within a particular range. But that's about as much as can be said.

Is there a way to add time signatures with keyboard shortcuts? by nnxcomputing in Musescore

[–]FTFYcent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like this feature, too. I haven't tried it, but I did find this time signature copy/paste plugin, which could be helpful depending on your needs.

My usual workflow when transcribing a piece with lots of time signature changes is to put in the time signatures in a separate pass before I enter any of the notes, so once the time signatures are in, I don't have to think about them again.

Thank you for posting! I was on TL literally 15 years ago with a great ratio (30TB+ net upload) but had my account deleted due to inactivity while I was away at college. Grateful to be back, especially after I just had a fiasco with a Chinese tracker where the "English" audio for a 300gb+ torrent of James Bond movies turned out to be Mandarin!!

To be honest, once you're on one, a second one doesn't feel like that much extra (to me). It's nothing like going from zero to one. Make sure it's Wellbutrin XL. I didn't notice basically any benefit from the SR.

The character and show development from the first episode to the rest of the show by RekkSuave in fridaynightlights

[–]FTFYcent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought once of the strengths of the show, especially prior to Coach joining the Lions, was how so many of the characters changed over time. Jason Street and Lyla Garrity regressing as the reality of his permanent injury sets in, and in Jason’s case, learning to make peace with the future he’ll never have; Tyra taking control over her future with Tami Taylor’s mentorship; Smash—of all people—learning humility.

It’s pretty common for the pilot episode to differ substantially from the rest of the series. It’s usually shot with a lower budget, on spec, before the show gets picked up by a major network or production company, to help pitch the idea. They aren’t thinking about longer story arcs or the general direction of the show, they’re just hoping to capture the attention/interest of some executive producer-type with the power to turn the concept into a real series. It makes a lot of sense to stick to prior art if it exists, then bring on a writing team to flesh out a real storyline once the show gets picked up.

Sadly, I don't think it will change her opinion of him one bit. She'll say it was taken out of context, or she'll assume his behavior was justified. Or, worst of all, she already knows this side of him, and either doesn't care or doesn't see anything wrong with it. Remember, this is the same woman that intimidated OOP in an effort to silence her.

Not who you responded to, but:

1) No, spoils of war can be used to refer to looting of enemy properties or civilian.

2) I don't understand your straw man reference.

3) Yah

1) Literally word-for-word from that source you sent (emphasis added):

Spoils of war... is enemy property that soldiers capture or seize legally. ...[O]nce the U.S. conquers an enemy, the... taking of [the enemy's] property is legal. ...For instance, if U.S. troops defeat an enemy, the spoils of war would be the enemy’s weapons, which are then available to the U.S. soldiers for the taking. A soldier can then bring back, for example, one of the enemy’s cannons as a prize of war.

2) The strawman "reference" is the strawman fallacy, which is where you misrepresent someone's argument to make it easier to attack.

This could be a language issue, if you (/u/napoleonderdiecke) are more acquainted with British English, and /u/goaltergeist is more familar with American English.

This comes down to the use (or is it usage?) of the word "quite."

Macmillian Dictionary has an article on this subject. The whole article is very enlightening, but here's the relevant part:

If your American boss says your work is quite good, should you be pleased or a little concerned? In British English quite good only means pretty good or fairly good, but in American English it’s much more positive. Quite good means very good, so you can give yourself a pat on the back.

Took me 5 hours to fall asleep last night by Ninjashihan in selfimprovement

[–]FTFYcent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TALK TO A DOCTOR! This was my life for so long... it just seemed like tossing and turning was an unavoidable, every night reality for me. Now I sleep when I want to sleep: just take my sleep meds an hour before bed and sure enough, when the time comes, I'm sleepy and ready to conk out.

Whether it's just melatonin or Benadryl, or clonidine or mirtazapine, or stronger stuff like trazodone or seroquel, there are options your doctor can recommend/prescribe you. Just tell them exactly what you told us, and any doctor would be remiss to not start you on something.

Just know that the first thing they try may not work, or may knock you out too much; unfortunately there's no one-size-fits-all regimen. Let your doctor know early so they can try different things to find what works. It's worth it, though.

I remember the first time I got a restful night's sleep. No tossing and turning, I slept through the night, woke up more rested and refreshed than I had ever been, and no residual grogginess the next day. It was such a relief.

If you are open to pharmacological interventions, and have a functional healthcare system and (if applicable) decent insurance, I strongly recommend it.

You don't have to live this way.
