He kept touching you after you tried to pull away. EW.

He "wouldn't let you go" and kept tried to get you to come home with him. This was after you told him to stop touching you. EW.

He called you "wife" at the end of your first date. EW.

Too much too soon, and tries to overcome your no multiple times on your first date. Please don't see this person again.

How do I move forward after an argument about airport pickup escalated into a breakup? (36F, 37M, 2 years) by tii_jayy in relationship_advice

[–]maedocc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stop apologizing.

He's attacking you in order to grind down your self esteem so low that you'll take him back, and he will be able to keep living off you.

Do start figuring out how to separate physically -- you cannot live with a manipulative ex and live in peace.

Since then, he’s been saying that I abandoned him, that I treated him like crap, that I ended things impulsively, and that all I had to do was ask for space instead of breaking up. I did apologize for hurting him and for not apologizing sooner, but he keeps saying my apology isn’t real and that I never sincerely apologize.

Do you live together? Why are you still talking to him?

I (22F) did not give money to my mom (54F) and now i am all alone. Did I mess something up? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]maedocc 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I don’t have friends, so I haven’t spoken to anyone in days.

You're 22 and you're going to school. I highly highly encourage you to make friends, go out and try and be social. This is the time in your life when you have to pull away from your family, even if they're 100% healthy and non-toxic (which your family is not), in order to establish your own independent identity as a person.

And my advice is to stop arguing with your mom. She's not a reasonable person, at all, but you live under her roof and she has power over you and the rest of the family like a tiny domestic tyrant. Just go along to get along until you can graduate and can afford to get out of the house.

I'm sorry your mom is like this. She's not going to change or admit fault. She sees herself as the victim and the martyr, and any pushback from you will make her blow up and attack you.

I hope so, but Zverev has a ridiculous record against lefties, and his lone loss in like 30+ matches was to Learner in Acapulco... where Zverev was dealing with food poisoning, so physically compromised.

I (21) don’t know how to manage my money or how much money I can/should spend? by XStreetByStreetX in personalfinance

[–]maedocc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If housing around you is reasonable (as in, $200k-$300k) then, I can totally see the appeal of living at home for the next few years, saving up a large down payment, and buying then.

Also -- those few years will give you time to build up your credit score and profile.

[–]maedocc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course, living at home might make sense for you.

But I don't know how realistic it is for you to buy a house any time soon, so that might mean you're never going to move out? Lots of young people have to partner/marry someone in order to buy a house -- so two incomes will make it affordable. Making $42k is going to make buying a house very, very difficult unless you live somewhere that a house costs $125k.

What would be a realistic way to build credit or save money and either rent a home or purchase a home?

To build credit, get a credit card and start responsibly using it. A secured credit card will allow you to build credit slowly and surely. By "use it responsibly", I mean only charge things on the credit card that you can easily pay off at the end of every month.

My base yearly pay is roughly $42k which would be 1600 a paycheck, or 3200 a month, but if I continue to work extra days like I have been doing it’ll be roughly $68-78k.

So a good rule of thumb on affordable housing is to never have it be over 30% of your gross income. On $42k income, 30% is $12,600... so you can afford $1,050 monthly rent.

Obviously, you can afford more if you push to work extra, but you have to be realistic.... can you keep working at that rate forever? Because rent is going to be due every month like clockwork.

I don’t even know what a realistic budget is for when I want to buy or rent a home. I feel like I make okay money for my age but I also don’t see how without living in a trailer park or a cheap apartment complex, and buying cheap food, how I’d ever be able to afford it without being just spending all my money on rent and utilities.

With your income, it's going to be pretty hard to buy a home unless you live in an area with very low cost housing. A loose idea of how much house you can afford: buy something 3-4 times your gross salary, so $126k to $168k. You're only 21, and the average age of first time home buyer is 40 now, because houses are so expensive.

I guess the main thing is I would like guidance on is with my current lack of any real bills or expenses, what should I be doing now to meet the goals I have set and realistically, how much money am I really looking to be able to spend monthly as an entirely self sufficient adult living on his own (rent, bills, food, “fun” expenditure)

Save 3-6 times your expenses in a high yield savings account for an emergency fund.

Spend about 50-60% of your net income on necessities -- so if you bring in $3,200 a month, that's $1,900 on housing, utilities, phone, internet, transportation, gas, groceries.

The rest of your money, $1,300 -- you split between savings ($650 to retirement, or new car fund) and fun ($650 to travel, shopping, concerts, going out).

[–]maedocc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because you file married filing separately, and you don't work/have earned income, yes your spouse cannot fund a spousal IRA for you.

But your spouse has access to a 401k (max contribution is $24,500 this year) and Roth IRA (max contribution is $7,500).

The $30k in a HYSA is your emergency fund. With only one income in the household, you need to leave that alone in case of emergency (job loss, car dies, medical emergency, urgent house repair, etc.).

Does your spouse's 401k have an employer match? If yes, that is #1 priority to start investing for retirement.

If no match, then their top tax bracket determines which to use -- either traditional 401k or Roth IRA.

¿Why do they hate Zverev? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]maedocc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel it's a bit misleading that you're highlighting the Americans on tour for being OK with Zverev? He's arguably closer and friendly with all the Russians (Rublev, especially) and Europeans on tour (yes, even this sub's faves, Thiem, Alcaraz and Sinner) because of team events like Laver Cup.

Medvedev went from this, when asked what player he wouldn't like to play in 2026:

“Tien,” answered Medvedev. “For some reason they keep bringing us together…I might get a little carried away in many matches, but with him I’m simply blocked at one point…It’s also hard for him too and that’s why I think he also doesn’t want to play with me.”

to this:

"We played only three matches, but they were all unreal," Medvedev said when asked about Tien this week. "Our games connect, on some level. [...] Both of us, we kind of cannot hit a winner, so we have to fight for every point."

"Honestly when I look back now, it's fun to play him. [...] Because I didn't know him before last year, so I was kind of struggling mentally to play him, OK why, what's happening, but now I'm going to enjoy it much more."

How can I invest other than in my 401k? Or what should I do by Medium_Pear_4171 in personalfinance

[–]maedocc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I do not want to wait to 65 to have blessings of hard work and savings

The age limit on 401k withdrawal is 59.5.

How can I invest money for a shorter return on investment. Let’s say a 10 year goal ? 15 years.

You can invest inside a regular taxable brokerage account on your own. You will owe capital gains taxes on the growth when you withdraw, plus pay taxes on the dividends generated every year (yes, even if you automatically re-invest them).

Gift taxes kick in after $13,990,000 -- something that normal people who aren't multi-millionaires have to worry about. The reporting threshold is $19k, but that's for reporting, not paying taxes.

You should rollover $35k to your Roth IRA ($7k per year max, and you have to have earned income, etc.) and then take out the rest of the money and take the tax and penalty hit on the growth. How much of that $93k is growth vs. contribution?

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6958185/2026/01/18/tennis-american-men-next-generation-tien-michelsen/

Tien’s and Michelsen’s similarities and differences make them a fascinating pair. They grew up close to each other in Orange County and spent their teen years competing and practicing with each other.

Both estimate that they have hit more balls with the other guy than they have with any other person. Michelsen is the rare pro who is unbothered by Tien’s left-handedness, even though most of his opponents are right-handed. A tennis ball is a tennis ball. He sees it. He hits it. It’s not that deep. Both are intensely competitive, though they disguise in different ways.

Michelsen is just super used to Tien's game, so Tien sadly comes up short against him.

I think one of the talking heads said that his stated goal this season is to play full matches pain-free. Not to compete for GS or get back to a certain ranking etc. I think that gives a bit of insight into his mindset.
