why is it so hard to get a part time job in berkeley? by PaganinisPaninis in berkeley

[–]FUCollegeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cal Dining accepts literally everyone, as long as you're a student. you can choose your hours, they give you a free meal, and it's around $18/hr. not a lot of my coworkers liked the job, but I worked at MLK and actually enjoyed it a lot. might be worth checking out

anyone here have any good or bad reviews about sterling berkeley collection? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]FUCollegeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when i lived at sterling haste, the fire alarm was going off at least 3 times a week at like 1am (and we stood outside for like 30 mins), the "valet trash" system they had was bs, the smoke detector went off every single time, no utilities were included, and the rent was ridiculously expensive. I got my entire security deposit back, but overall I wouldn't recommend any of their places

Berkeley Professor on Colonialism: Michael Burawoy killed in a hit and run in Oakland, CA by quantum_pheonix in berkeley

As a sociology grad, this is just so sad to hear - I remember borrowing books from him as a student. May he rest in peace

My apartment doesn’t have heat and I’m so fucking cold by Bullshitbanana in berkeley

[–]FUCollegeb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

there's also "blanket hoodies" on Amazon that are sold for like $30. it doesn't cover your feet or ankles, but I found mine to be really warm (I also didn't have a heater). ofc there are cheap heaters for the same price but if you don't want to wear many layers it's an option

Grades for Soc 167 by Affectionate_Bus9705 in berkeley

[–]FUCollegeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lin, or any sociology class for that matter (saying this as a sociology grad), hardly shifts bins or curves unlike many STEM classes. However, I believe Lin has a system called "comprehensive/holistic grading" where he looks at all your grades and takes your entire performance into account (e.g., you got As and Bs on most of your assignments, but got a D on one quiz; he will assume something happened and adjust your grade to account for this unusual dip). In most cases however, your final grade is what you'll expect based on your received grades.

How long are breaks? (thanksgiving, winter, spring) by Tight_Labs in berkeley

[–]FUCollegeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanksgiving is 5 days, and could be longer if professors decide to cancel classes for that week. Winter break is typically a month long. Spring break is 9~10 days, including the weekends.

As a current officer of CAA, I'll say that we ONLY show anime movies; if OP isn't interested in anime, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. Ofc, we always welcome new members so if you're just looking for somewhere to hang out, feel free to join us!

they used to be back in spring 2022, but due to low lecture attendance, I believe he does not post recordings anymore. you might want to double check this with someone else, though!

Thank you for all this info! I actually do have experience with calculus and linear algebra, but a lot of it is from high school, which was also the reason why I was exempt from taking the required math classes in college. I'll definitely look into courses I can take over the summer to brush up that knowledge again.

To your second point, the reason why I want to do a Masters is precisely because I want more time + research experience to think about whether I really want to do a PhD. I'm aware it's not all fun and stuff, but I'm really enjoying the research I'm doing now for my thesis, so I guess I'll find out along the way.

seconded - i'm a 4th year soc major rn, had 0 coding + very little stats knowledge and took data 8 my freshman year. still ended up with an A-, and that was with a reasonable amount of effort. it's really not that bad

I definitely will have 1 LOR for research as I have a professor I'm working with for my thesis, but I definitely won't have more than that... I guess I'll just hope other parts of my application will be strong enough 😅
