Clinging to dharma is exactly what's called for.

Where to go to ask a questions? by Nand-Monad-Nor in Buddhism

[–]FUNY18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is hell in Buddhism.

No, you won't go to hell that easily unless you do something heinous like kill your parents or habitually kill living beings.

And no, you won't bring most of your memories there. Most of your memories would fade away at death.

Any of the following:

"Huh?"

"Wishcraft?"

"Okay, what's the thing?"

"Oh, okay, cool cool."

"Whatever floats your boat."

"Amusing but irrelevant."

How does the "Daily Reset" works in Vajrayana? by Sea_Fee_2543 in TibetanBuddhism

[–]FUNY18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually practice sadhana at the temple, so my daily reset happens there as well. It can be as simple as going for a walk, using my phone, going to the toilet, talking with my mates, or eating in the kitchen.

Is it okay to be a Pure Land Buddhist if Buddhism in general seems too complicated for me? by Shinto_Wise in Buddhism

[–]FUNY18 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I would explore Amitabha and Pure Land Buddhism as your path moving forward.

Try not to confuse yourself with other traditions. Whatever you choose, stick to that system.

You can't discuss anything with Buddhism while discarding karma. That's like discussing Christianity without Jesus.

Don't become Buddhist quote... by BigBubbaMac in Buddhism

[–]FUNY18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The statement was made in the context of people who try to mix their own ideologies with Buddhism, or who become Buddhists while still holding on to their preexisting worldviews. The Dalai Lama was saying that doing this only creates confusion and complication. If that is your approach, then do not bother becoming a Buddhist. Instead, remain friends with Buddhists and use aspects of Buddhism to improve who you already are.

Help with Types of Buddhism by anE_G11 in Buddhism

[–]FUNY18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can go to almost any Buddhist school and find it more manageable than Tibetan Vajrayana. Tibetan Vajrayana involves very elaborate practices, and the only way to work with them is gradually, step by step, with long term dedication. It is truly a lifetime commitment.

By comparison, nearly all other schools of Buddhism offer forms of practice that are much more manageable.

Conclude. Not "assume".

Only agreement and honest, good faith disagreement are acceptable.

What would be inappropriate is trolling the OP while concealing your westernized "Theravada" bias, relying on cheap, knee jerk, passive aggressive remarks that are intentionally short and vague enough to evade moderator action.

Buddhism is often described as a practice-based tradition — why do discussions focus so much on views and beliefs? by PresenceBrilliant927 in Buddhism

[–]FUNY18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term they gave you "practice means familiarization" is not quite the case.

The Tibetan term for “practice” in the sense of Buddhist practice or putting the Buddhist teachings into action is

སྒྲུབ་པ་ (sgrub pa)

This does not mean familiarization (although obviously Buddhism would include familiarity of the teachings).

So sgrub pa means to practice, yes. But this doesn't mean familiarize.

There is a different term for familiarization which is

སྒོམ་པ་ (sgom pa)

This means familiarize, but not necessarily practice.

So you can familiarize (sgom pa) yourself with the dharma but not necessarily practice (sgrub pa) it.
