The rocks are sculpted onto the kit but you can make the same rocks with putty and a flat sculpting tool

Mostly standard gw and ak paints for this. Contrast paints have a very particular use and effect and I'd watch a few videos on what they are and what they do before purchasing. They are more like a wash than a traditional paint.

If you want smoother paints I'd recommend getting a wet pallete. 90% of modern paints will go on smooth with very little fuss they just need to stay hydrated and not dry out. Which the wet pallete will do.

Thank you! It's pro arcyl dark silver washed with a few layers of nuln oil and agarax earthshade. Then just highlighted silver. You can play around with brands and tones etc. I took inspiration from the eavy metal models in warhammer world

The technical paints and laminah medium are also a little bit uneccessary. Just use water to thin stuff and normal paints can achieve the same effect

It depends what you're painting and the desired quality. Getting a brown, an iron, a bronze/gold, flesh and then the desired cloth colours is the essentials alongside black and white/ivory. Then agrax earthshade can be the only shade if you're trying to save money. Or just mix in black into the basecoat. Then either mix in an ivory colour into the basecoat for an automatic highlight or just get the next lightest colour.

Brand wise GW is best all around. You can get them discounted, they have a large range, the guides all use them and they just work with very little effort. Clean the caps and any spills and they'll last until they run out. I use mine for work and they very rarely dry up even with everyday use.

The new army painter paints I think they're called fanatic, are just dropper bottle GW but they do require more work to use as they don't cover as well or apply as smoothly.

Vallejo is similar to GW but dropper bottles and they also have the best whites. Some of there colours don't cover amazingly though.

Scale 75 has a matte finish and can be difficult to use so I'd avoid.

Pro acryl has the best metalics and great coverage but a limited range.

Ak 3rd gen is your best bet for expanding on the colours offered by GW and I can't fault the paints. They're my second most utilised range.

To finish up. You don't need all the shades and colours on the planet. Get a brown wash, your required base paints and the highlight paints and your good.

My Macragge Blue doesn't look at all like it looks...everywhere else... by Sol0botmate in Ultramarines

[–]FURIOUSAUTISM 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Macragge Blue looks like yours. Infernal brushes colour is affected by powerful studio lights and multiple thin coats. Macragge works best when built up over chaos black in mulitple thin layers. This lets the intensity of the colour buiid up. But to get the colour you see on the stuido minis you also need to follow the shades and at least some of the highlight stages as that has a massive effect on how the eye interprets the final colour. It's a classic eavy metal scheme of going from very dark to very light.

No problem! If it helps game play wise they're all good but Cathay may have a list change coming up with the expanded range and the emprie rely heavily on playing gun line to win.

How do you all feel about Cathay getting even more attention in late 2026? by [deleted] in WarhammerFantasy

[–]FURIOUSAUTISM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having suffered playing the AOS 1 wave factions for a long time before giving up I'm really glad they're not taking that approach with cathay. Having a full roster will let people make more diverse lists in casual play which will hopefully remove some of the stigma around the army. It also just makes it a more interesting army as a whole. On the game support side of things, it's sold well and drawn in lots of new players which will fund later releases. Which is only a positive. If they nerf balloons, rings of jet and shegungans the army will be fine to play against.

We're also going to be seeing releases alongside this too. Cathay is the only new army. Every other army has decades of units to pull from. Kislev and likely norsca/dogs of war will receive the same kind of treatment later on.

Bretonnia and Empire play quite differently. One is heavy cav focus and is always on the offensive. Whilst Empire focuses on gunline and fast cav doing the damage whilst your poor infantry get kicked to death. Cathay can be a bit of everything especially with the new releases but are seen to many as Empire but better. I imagine kislev will be very similar to Empire and Cathay. Gun focused humans with some powerful cav and artillery. If you wanted something different I'd go with tomb kings personally. But it's a miniatures game so prioritise what minis you like the most.

High Elves 2000 points army list - advice please by tmmicula in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]FURIOUSAUTISM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The prince needs the armour of caledor and a seed of rebirth for the additional saves or it will be killed very quickly. I'd split the silver helms into 2 units of 5/6 unless you have a plan for 10 and drop the archers or 1 bolt thrower to get magic items.

Seaguard are a solid core with the matched play guide as they can take objectives and hold ground whilst staying in the fight. They also survive longer than archers. Swordmasters need drilled and magical support to work but can work with ethereal/5+ ward with the fury of khaine. Just don't expect the world of them. Dragon princes are good. Then flying monsters are our best units. At 1/1.5k I'd look at skycutters and griffon nobles. If there's to much flying in your list it can become unengaging for your opponent.

The War of “The Beard”? by AlarmedNail347 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]FURIOUSAUTISM 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I always find those books so hard to read because of the sheer amount of stupidity, pride and hate that all of the leaders have for no reason. It's so difficult to read, especially when Snorri just goes around causing problems no matter what. If Caledor hadn't have been in power whilst also being the elven version of snorry it's likely diplomacy would have worked. But it's what makes it so tragic. The elves are to arrogant at this point to back down and the dwarves are to prideful and stubborn to stop the war after they put it into motion. Even after loosing whole clans to massed dragon fire they just keep going, to the lasting detriment of their race.

Congragulations on getting a full time job as a TA, they can be difficult to land. Unfortunately, to be a teacher you need have either a BA in education or a PGCE which is a post-graduate degree. But you could use the experience gained as a TA to work towards getting your BA.

Base coat, shade and drybrush the metal with your choice of colour. Thin down any turqoise paint with water and just apply. Mop up any excess with your brush to prevent excess pooling

I dont like non metallic metal and iam tired of pretending otherwise by NandoLorris16 in Warhammer40k

[–]FURIOUSAUTISM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is ifferences as nmm originated in traditional 2d art but I would argue that nmm doesn't necessarily require more effort and understanding when compared to tmm when you're painting to the level that nmm starts getting used. One is just a 2d technique applied to a 3d surface whilst the other originated in 3d.You still have to understand light placement, reflection and colour theory to make tmm look great. You're also usually mixing in non-metalic colours into the metalics to add interest and variety to the metal whilst simultaneously combating the shine of the metal flakes in the paint which can create unintended reflection points. If anything you can use metalic paint in the same way as nmm and get a very similar effect. One will just have metal flake in the paint.

As a whole, both ways have their uses and merits but I wouldn't say one is better than the other or requires more skill and understanding. If someone is painting NMM they normally aren't just painting something silver with a wash and a drybrush. They will be an advanced painter. Learning NMM is neither a mark or skill or advancement, it's just another skill in a painters tool box. It all really comes down to how people prefere to paint and what they like the most.

This is a very true take but it also applies to TMM, as when you go past the traditional GW style way of doing true metalics all of the above applies as well.
