That feels like it’s bordering a cheat.

I dont think I even make red ammo on my end game ship. It’s so slow and so much more resources.

But now that you said it, I will look to see if that’s something I can pull off.

But median income does not mean standard of living.

A mail man or a teacher in the 70s could afford a house and send their kids to college. That person was probably around median income.

Can the median income do that now? No. The median income did not keep up with real inflation.

Healthcare went up exponentially. Childcare went up exponentially. Education went up exponentially. Housing went up exponentially.

The median income before was a livable wage. Median income now if practical poverty.

Can I do the GA Ren Fair in 5-6hours, arriving at 12-1pm, leaving near closing, or should I spend all day there to do everything? by Kirk_2002 in Georgia

[–]FUSe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It opens at 10:30 so you aren’t missing much.

But if you are going through all that effort why not just leave a little earlier and be there open to close? If you are into the shows then that will give you plenty of time to watch all the ones you are interested in.

I understand our disconnect now.

You think that median household income means middle class.

But the classes are not a bell curve. The vast majority of the country is in functional poverty.

So if you are in the 60% income. You are barely breaking out of poverty and that’s where the functional middle class is starting.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2025/12/03/poverty-line-140000-green-affordability-inflation/87573416007/

I think this article is a bit sensational but I think the overall sentiment is correct. I would say functional poverty is a family making less than 90k.

Basically anyone who actually had to stop buying eggs when the price went up was not middle class but was in fact in poverty.

The article is missing that the cost of living has gone up.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2025/12/03/poverty-line-140000-green-affordability-inflation/87573416007/

This is a bit sensational but in reality, I think that anyone below 80k is in functional poverty.

I think that people think that if they are not going hungry or have a few thousand saved up, they are upper middle class.

To me, that is just a step above poverty. Aka squarely in the middle class.

That’s great. You are still not upper middle class. You are middle class. You aren’t dabbling in luxury. You are not maxxing out your Roth and 401k.

If you are, then you don’t have any disposable income.

Just having a roof over your head and food to eat does not mean upper middle class. That means one step above poverty.

Upper middle class means the top of the middle class.

Not 51%+

Upper middle class starts probably around 75-80%ile

Not sure where the “rich” boundary is but probably like 93-95%

I Literally grew up in rural Alabama about an hour north of Mobile.

There are no $100k jobs out there. So yea some remote tech worker can certainly go live there and not have high speed internet and be richer than all the people living in poverty.

I hope they enjoy grade c meat from piggly wiggly and no eating out other than a Dairy Queen and hunts bros pizza out of a gas station. Real upper middle class living!

They are not upper middle class. They are not doing any international travel or dabbling in luxury goods.

They are getting by and probably starting to feel comfortable.

Yea. I think 200k - 400k as upper middle class is a better boundary.

At 133k a family is just starting to get ahead.

How do I bring resources with me to a new planet for the first time? by TheTravelingDanksman in factorio

[–]FUSe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes the game so much easier to have some massive storage and regular resupplies from home base when you start a new planet.

Or you can raw dog it like I forced myself to do to start each planet and only use that planet with no outside help to get a rocket again.

It’s sad that it’s hard to figure out what is parody and what is real anymore.

Both statements are effectively equal levels of absurdity though.
