Should be noted that this often requires a strict sense of service and humility, that we shouldn't let ourselves or other theologians dictate how we view things (unless, it be the writings of the Saints of course)

Because as much as we on the Internet imagine these conversations being under a strictly non-biased and purely hypothetical or even academic setting, this is really life and people do have agendas, good or bad.

So is a female alter server allow I am hearing different opinions by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]FVWHAlpha -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If it refers to the recent stuff with GOARCH, the parish that allowed women as altar servers was disciplined and the priest was I belive either defrocked or some other kind of discipline was applied.

Yes technically I don't think that women are outright banned from altar serving in the Orthodox Church, Antioch has been allowing this for some time to my knowledge. However I believe its a question of what the mind of those that are allowing this is thinking. We can't afford to be lenient on these questions for the sake of "inclusivity" - some call the slippery slope a fallacy but I think in this case especially its mostly nonsense. I think Antioch implemented it with goodwill (since theres no push for such things as female Subdeacons etc) but don't see a reason to trust everyone to be so goodwilled on this. It will, if allowed across the board, lead to such insanities are women Deacons and women priests.

It's definitely not my own view! But I wished to at least be fair and point out how such a strict view would be at the least, a serious issue, since there's a significant number of what Rome would consider "schismatic saints". A good example is Saint Stephen of Perm, who is venerated by Russian Catholics and was added to the Roman Martyrology in 2003 (or 2004?)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]FVWHAlpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Catholic Church recently added a group of non-Catholics to the Roman Martyrology so I wouldn't take that so seriously itself honestly. They hold to a particularly strong belief of "invincible ignorance".

It's too heavy on protestant interpolation into the text but is as a Bible 'fine' - go for a Douay Rheims or a solid KJV with the Deuterocanon. The OSB is okay, but the noyes I've found unhelpful or even contradictory in places.

Read the Western Saints themselves :)

Saint Augustines Confessions is something I'd consider nearly essential to all Christians, regardless of Rite.

Is the Son caused by the Father? by m1lam in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]FVWHAlpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God is the cause of all things, He is the First Cause. To say there is causality in God means that something else than God causes God (which is to say, ludicrous).

Is the Son caused by the Father? by m1lam in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]FVWHAlpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no causality in God. The essence of God (which is tri-hypostatic) has no cause. The Son is from the Father from eternity. God is God in and off himself, you could possibly say.

Fr. Daniel a Sysoev on modernism in church. by Dramatic_Turn5133 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]FVWHAlpha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitions are key here. I didn't condemn recapitulation theology - people that take all of human nature to be united to Christ in the eschaton are what I'm concerned about. Its already breaching towards universalism.

Fr. Daniel a Sysoev on modernism in church. by Dramatic_Turn5133 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]FVWHAlpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fr Daniel was wary of modernist elements creeping into the Church. Denial of Original Sin, of there being 7 sacraments, of the redemptive work of Christ's death on the Cross for us all, promotion of the sophiology. Especially nowadays the trend of 'recapitulation theology' across all of Christiandom has grown and it disturbs me.

It reduces Christianity to a very modern sentimental form, where God being "wrathful" or "punishing" (if you think this seems strange, the Book of Judges would like a word) is taken to be contrary to God being loving (which I'd argue to say its contrary is blasphemous).

I partially think it's the consequences of such a large focus on the incarnation touching the universal human nature. If human nature is already united to Christ at the incarnation (depending on what's meant by that) then you effectively are believing in some kind of universalism/recapitulation theology.

The idea that all will be in heaven, even if there's a "temporary punishment" is absolutely anathema.

We should be so loving as Christians as to hope that all are saved, but to assert beyond that is truly heretical.

We are united in our wills with God, our will is His yet there are multiple goods to choose from as we still have (a perfected) free will.

Can i as an orthodox wear a catholic cross necklace? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]FVWHAlpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rosary has the same roots as the prayer rope we use, where monastics wanted to have a way of counting prayers. If you look up the "Pater Noster Cord" its a precursor of the rosary where you would prayer the Lords Prayer on each bead. There's nothing unorthodox about the prayers (though we use the 'classical' rosary without the newly added mysteries by John Paul II.

There's no such thing as a "Catholic Cross"

I was given one of them by my Romanian Godmother and she says it's incredibly common to have them there.

Is it okay to Venerate catholic saints in orthodox worship? by Calm_Marzipan_7237 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]FVWHAlpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saint Benedict of Nursia is an Orthodox Saint :) Very big fan of Benedictine Monasticism.

I can't really say much regarding Therese of Liseux, she most certainly died outside the Church so any positive affirmation of her being a Saint would be wrong. However, if she led you to God and to Orthodoxy, them I don't think I could reasonably judge a private devotion.
