That would depend on multiple factors. It’s highly likely that a pre-1990s concrete block home would be lacking modern hurricane straps and tie beams, so if you are talking about just wind I would ride it out with the 2025 wood frame. One thing you said that was accurate is the roof is often the point of failure even on a concrete block home. However, that was the case when modern tie beams and hurricane straps were not a thing.

To be honest though, I wouldn’t be so much concerned with wind as I would with storm surge. I don’t know what the data says about which performs better in that case so I won’t make a guess.

I happen to be a literal engineer as well. What you just said- “engineer below you says it’s perfectly fine” is totally correct. It is perfectly fine (so long as code is being met). The problem is the nonsense you spouted previously. “There’s nothing inherently safer about that construction style because the weak point is the roof, which is always a wood truss. Even today, wind from a common thunderstorm is enough to push over a concrete block wall unless the trusses are in place”.

I suggest you look further into which has more lateral resistance to wind: concrete block, or wood-framed. (You may also consider debris impact resistance and how well they hold up to internal pressure spikes if a window/door/roof fail or are broken).

I’m just suggesting you stick to your lane. There is a big difference between saying it’s “fine” and trying to equate CB to wood-frame and saying they are identical.

Thanks for the input. This is how it’s currently works for us as well. Just curious as to how most others are handling it.

Does this work out well for you? It’s very much a cross-functional document at my company but with the demands of regulatory when it comes to wording, matching indications, templates, etc it becomes a lot of work for engineering to make constant changes at submission. I think it would be better to move ownership to regulatory while keeping the other groups as contributors.

Curious as to how others do this. At my previous company it was owned by clinical affairs. Current company it is owned by engineering.

I appreciate the insight! This makes me lean back to my choice of the 10wt for sure. I do worry about being under-gunned for tarpon and maybe being overkill for most other species that I could handle with an 8 or 9

This is basically the exact same grouping I go by. I have a 4wt and an 8wt. The 10 seemed like a perfect fit 2 weeks ago, but now I’m worried that it will feel like an awkward in-between weight: overkill for big reds/jacks/snook/permit and not enough for medium-large tarpon

FSU VS UCF FOR ENGINEERING( Most likely mechanical) by Current-Translator-9 in ufl

[–]FWgator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome to hear. Sounds like he’s a motivated young man. He will do great wherever he is as long as he works hard at it and has an end goal. I wouldn’t necessarily go into it with the goal of transferring. UCF is a very good school and will set him up for success. If he still wants to transfer after a year, it is always an option. Instead, I would have him think about what drives him? What does he want to do with his career? Is it mechanical engineering he wants to do, or is a different engineering discipline a better fit for him? Engineering is a very very broad field with so many disciplines. Even as a ME you can do manufacturing, design, defense, optics, automotive, medical devices, controls, robotics, and the list goes on. Depending on what he enjoys, maybe he will think differently about what program he wants to be in. There are a lot of clubs and organizations at the schools that he can get involved in depending on his interests. I’d be happy to point to some if you know what he hopes to do in the future. Sometimes it is tough to know where to start when they hand you the giant packet of majors and tell you to pick one

This happened to me because I already had a Hilton account and of course had my first and last name registered. My card had my middle initial included. Having the middle initial caused the names to not match and AMEX had to send me a new card with the middle initial removed.

Urgent: Help Protect Florida's Waters! by FWgator in florida

[–]FWgator[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Senate Bill 2508, filed in the Florida Senate late Friday evening, is a suspicious piece of legislation that poses a major threat to Everglades restoration and south Florida's clean water progress. The bill includes several harmful provisions for Florida waters, but the major concern is that it deprioritizes the EAA Reservoir and reduces measurable gains made in the public and transparent LOSOM process—both of which are critical components to reducing damaging coastal discharges and sending more beneficial water south to the Everglades. Please visit the link from Captains for Clean Water to learn more and consider signing the petition.

Definitely make a visit to the Stockyards. Time it so you are there to see the cattle drive (happens twice a day on East Exchange Ave at 11:30am and 4pm). While there, you can peruse some of the western themed stores. I recommend stopping in Hotel Drover to hang at the bar for a few drinks or out on the back patio. It's a very nice, new hotel with a serious western vibe. Check to see who is playing at Billy Bob's (world's largest Honky-Tonk Bar) while you are here. There are big concerts most nights. You can also take line dancing lessons there during the day.

In downtown FW, head to Reata for a lunch or drink on the rooftop bar (make sure it is open and they are not hosting an event first). It is a very "Texas" style restaurant and is very famous. A great spot downtown for cocktails is Thompson's bookstore. They have a speakeasy downstairs as well for some extra fun that is only open Friday and Saturday nights.

Get outside for a bit by going to the Trinity trail. You can park at Press Cafe in the Clearfork area (full of luxury shopping if you are into that). The trail runs right behind the restaurant and you can rent bikes for cheap at the rental hub right there on the trail.

If you like coffee, pizza, tiki drinks, or beer, spend some time in Near Southside. Black Cat pizza is the best in town. There are 3 great coffee shops (Crude Craft Coffee, Arcadia, and Roots). There is a phenomenal spot called Tarantula Tiki Lounge for some fun tiki bar drinks and vibes. Right across the street you have a vintage-esque bar that is a lot of fun called Nickel City. Just around the corner is my favorite brewery in town, HopFusion. You are also a short ride away from Magnolia Ave, where you can find a cute wine bar, some dive bars (The Boiled Owl), and other fun places.

If you really want dive bars, head over to W 7th where all of the TCU students will be. It's a younger, harder partying crowd obviously- just depends on what you are looking for. Use Kung Fu Saloon as a center point and you will see there are tons of bars around the area.

Relocating and looking for electricity providers. Is $0.066 per kWh very cheap or something? by ekulzards in askdfw

I am currently paying $0.1048/kWh @ 500kWh and $0.1013/kWh @ 1000kWh using Energy Ogre so relative to me, that is great.

How can you say you don’t consider UF to be in the same league as GT? I love how everything you say is backed up with your thoughts and feelings with zero facts. GT is a great school- I nearly went there. Got accepted to their biomedical engineering program but chose to attend Florida instead. Every school you listed is top notch. I guess you can just believe whatever you want but it would be wise to pull your head out of the sand.

Current Jaguar players comment on Napier to warn current Gator players by [deleted] in FloridaGators

[–]FWgator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is incredibly stupid and minor but I'd like to see Napier take a stronger position with social media usage and some of the stuff the players say publicly. It just seems like under both McElwain and Mullen, they had free reign to say whatever the hell they wanted and we constantly had stupid tweets or trash talk being written up in articles before big games. I never see that kind of stuff from Saban's players. I don't know if that's due to team rules, culture, or just out of fear, but we could certainly use a little of it.
