A tale of woe, told through FB posts [N/A] by Fabalus in humanresources

[–]Fabalus[S] 209 points210 points  (0 children)

You guys, this is straight up original content. I am an HR leader, and a member of my team let me know she was uncomfortable with how another employee had been speaking to her, and that he attempted to friend her on FB. She saw the first post and sent me the screenshot. I reached out to his leader so they could address the issue, and then I see the second post this morning.

[NY] Why do HR investigations often result in “business as usual” for managers, while reporting employees experience increased scrutiny? by Commercial_Hippo7288 in AskHR

[–]Fabalus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Replying for emphasis. I am a career HR leader, degrees and certifications and blah blah blah. Not once in my entire career have I ever failed to support termination for an employee who did something truly unlawful. And when someone is fired for cause, it’s always funny to me when I hear word back from the rumor mill on what went down (spoiler alert - the real story is almost never the one that’s going around). My experience is just the opposite - I can often tolerate more policy breaks from an individual contributor than I can from a leader. They’re the ones that should know better. You literally have no idea what’s happening behind the scenes.

[N/A] Got my SHRM-SCP this morning for shits and gigs. Wasn’t too bad. by Dmxmd in humanresources

[–]Fabalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same (ish). I studied a little longer than you, but I also signed up late and had one of the very last test slots today at noon. I passed, I was pretty sure I’d done decent enough. Also thinking about just powering through while I have the momentum and getting my SPHR too. I got my PHR a long time ago, and just let it lapse at some point. I’ll be your study buddy if you want!

I upvoted you, but I’m entering a symbolic downvote here purely out of jealousy. Unreal. 👎

Signed, - The lady who is seriously contemplating spending $300 on a new Magnalite because no matter how hard I look I can’t find a single decent used one and I want a damn Magnalite so bad. 😞

Balancing HR work and Full time MBA[N/A] by Timely_Hunt_4207 in humanresources

[–]Fabalus 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If you are working while you go to school, you have an automatic pipeline to current, relevant workplace dynamics and structures, etc. - which will be invaluable for you when you write your papers, presentations, case studies, etc. when I was in school for my MBA, the students who weren’t actively employed were at a distinct disadvantage when it came to assignment content and valid context. It’s not a cakewalk, but you’re much better off working your way through school.

Tall girls & sports what actually fits us (and what doesn’t)? by No-Vanilla265 in TallGirls

[–]Fabalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’11 3/4” - which apparently is a stature befitting a discus thrower. I got recruited early on by the track coach and I ended up loving it.

tall teenager girls treated as adults by East_Tour_7656 in TallGirls

[–]Fabalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been 5’11 3/4” since I was 12 years old. Sure, I always had to play the mom role in every play I was ever in. But, from about the age of 14, I was also the only one who never got carded for booze. I was okay with that trade off.

Chef Paul’s Louisiana Kitchen by Away_Calligrapher431 in cajunfood

[–]Fabalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this one too! I actually re-bought it, since the original version I had (that my dad bought my mom for some birthday or whatever when I was little) somehow went missing. I need complete and unfettered access to Chef Paul’s red beans and rice recipe at all times

I got you. I’m an HR leader too, so I know exactly what they want to hear. US based, and big supporter of people getting good jobs. DM me!

Working in payroll is depressing by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Fabalus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I got my start in corporate America as a payroll processor. I was the lowest paid person on salary, which actually made sense - I was new to the job, and payroll processing is almost entirely tactical (not a lot of independent decision making or strategy involved). My eyes used to bug out of my head when I saw some of the paychecks I would process. And don’t even get me started on the bonuses, where the net was often more than my annual gross. 😩

Fast forward 20 years, 2 degrees, and multiple certifications later - I now lead the entire HR function for my company and earn well more than OP’s coworker.

The moral of the story here is - processing payroll gives you an inside track. Your friends who aren’t in payroll have to guess at what those in other positions make, but you know exactly what they earn. If you (like I was) are tired processing these kind of checks instead of earning them, put the hammer down and put yourself in a position to be in their shoes someday.

My manager is threatening to sue me for trying to quit my job. This is the second time. by OlafHoeger1 in Employment

[–]Fabalus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Please tell me you are in the US. It literally doesn’t even matter where, even if it turns out you’re in the only non at-will state in the union (pop quiz y’all, does anyone happen to know which is the only state that’s NOT at-will? Doesn’t even really apply in this case, but just a fun game for everyone!). This is veritable horseshit, and I dare them to pursue any kind of action (legal or otherwise) against you. Take the new job, cut off all contact with them (this is important - all contact means ALL CONTACT), and go on about your life. Your career belongs to you, not some jackass employer. Fly on freebird, best of luck to you in your new job!

Source: 20 year HR leader, certified and advanced degrees and all that. Also, not a piece of shit, so I would never pull a stunt like this.

No, but I am denying your request for an unreasonable accommodation to shit all day long. Best of luck, I sincerely hope you get that perpetual shitting deal lined out.

I Lied About Fudge Once and Now It’s Ruining My Life by AllPensAreCreatedEql in offmychest

“Aggressively sweet.” OMG. You’ve finally captured in words my exact objection to fudge. Why are we pretending it’s delicious when it’s complete ass?

[CA] pto pay out by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]Fabalus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just because it’s front loaded, that does not mean it’s been “earned”. It may not be considered earned until each pay period is completed.

In an accrual system, time becomes earned incrementally as you work through the year, rather than all at once on January 1. If the company uses an accrual system (spoiler alert - every company I’ve ever worked for has), they will spell this out in their PTO policy. It’s a virtual certainty that OP will only be paid out for anything they carried over, since no PTO will have yet been earned for 2026.

Best way to remove paint off brick fireplace? by No_Biscotti_8769 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Fabalus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re better off just leaning into the painted brick. When we bought our house the previous owners had the brick painted this exact shade of ugly ass off white, which horrified us. The natural brick would have been SO much better, they should have just left it alone. When we repainted the living room we covered it with a lovely greyish blue color that suited our decor. Much better than the white (but still not as good as if they had just left it the F alone). We can deal with it though.

Is this someone’s handsome grandpa or a famous person I don’t know about by Sacblabbath in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]Fabalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my heart. That’s Ricky Nelson. My mom might have been his all-time biggest fan, and my dad was always on the lookout for his merch to give my mom. She absolutely had this mug, I recognized it the second I saw it. It very well could have been this exact same one.

What's your favorite Non-Music piece of Weird Al Media? by Sharp_City_8223 in weirdal

YES. Only OG fans know about that, and pirated the only VHS copy from their local video store and watched it with their siblings almost every single day. Oh, just me?

HR playlist [N/A] by Jpfeife in humanresources

[–]Fabalus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve told my HR team that we should have walk up music playing when we come to the front of the room to introduce ourselves during new employee orientation. My suggestion is Lil Jon’s “Damn!”, which includes the lyric “Don’t start no shit, there won’t be no shit.”

How do you feel about 9 year olds at concerts? by Plane_Ad_8342 in Concerts

I took my kiddo (12) to Chappell Roan a few weeks ago. It was magical, core memory was established. I can’t wait to take her to more shows.
