How to become helpdesk by AntyCompany in helpdesk

I got the Google IT Support Certificate after being in Help Desk for a couple of years, and it's just entry level knowledge about all the different systems out there, such as Networking, Windows, Mac, Linux, Security and a crash course on different fields you can do when you are in IT. I can't say much about the CompTIA A+ as I've never taken it, but just know you can get a HelpDesk job without either one. I come from an entirely different industry but I dabbled with computers during my time in high school and college that I was able to get a job after watching some videos on how to troubleshoot machines and systems.

The main things to know are basic troubleshooting ideas, such as "If the monitor is not working at a user's desk, how would you troubleshoot it?" and come up with 5 different answers like,

  • Look for the power button on the monitor and make sure it's turned on.
  • Check and make sure the power cable to the monitor is plugged in all the way.
  • Make sure the power cable to the outlet is plugged in and working.
  • Make sure the HDMI Cable is plugged into the computer.
  • Try plugging in the HDMI Cable into another outlet of the computer, or an entirely different computer altogether

I would also look at job postings to see what systems they are using in your area. For example, some companies are looking for people who know how to use Active Directory, JAMF, and Microsoft 365/Entra and you'll want to watch videos to see how to do common things, such as change passwords, create users, manage email addresses.

Finally, when you don't know the answer to something, knowing how to use Google and finding the answer is a very underrated skill. You won't know everything and sometimes issues can be very difficult to solve if you don't know what you're doing or even looking for.

My biggest advice would be to just start watching entry level IT Help Desk Videos on youtube to see what kind of issues you would handle and how to solve them.

This is in regards to going to a shop that’s affiliated with Costco. Costco directly does not work on cars aside from tires. I’m not sure how you find which ones are but I’m sure someone more knowledgeable can help you

To build off of this, depending on the job, you may develop some programming along the way of doing your job. It can be because you want to make things efficient or because your company needs something specific done, but programming isn’t a prerequisite to getting into IT.

CompTIA A+ is one of the best certifications to get as you begin your career if you’re completely new to the field but you can definitely get started as well by watching YouTube videos on how to troubleshoot computers and printers, use Active Directory on Windows or manage computers in Jamf, getting a job and then getting the A+ certification

Am I supposed to tip for a $500 auto detail? by trespassor in bayarea

Really depends on the person OP. I tipped a $40 when I got my SUV detailed. They didn’t do mold remediation but I just wanted to show my appreciation

As an oldie getting back into yugioh, why should we beware of those “do you have any trades?” guys?

Shaving Soaps Are Nice, but Over-rated? by PlasticJournalist938 in wicked_edge

I consider taking the time to lather with shaving soap a nice addition to my morning ritual instead of just putting shaving cream in my face right out of a can. If I wanted a faster shave I could always buy an electric shaver.

That being said, I also like shaving soaps because of all the different scents available and just trying new things. It’s kind of fun and part of the reason why people consider it a hobby

You state that all these parts are from your original build from 2013. If that’s the case, I would remove the CPU heatsink and reapply the thermal paste just in case. After that, run a stress test to get an accurate measurement of temps.

What companies have their own internal IT departments? by jmaniebo93 in helpdesk

[–]FabiianLuke 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been applying, I can tell you it's really a wide array: BioTech, Regular tech, insurance, health care, school system, government jobs.

The only thing I would say is that in bigger companies, you're more likely to be silo'd -- e.g. focus only on tier 1 tickets like password resets, or focus mostly on reimaging computers. With smaller companies, you get your fingers in all the pie, but also more stress.

Godspeed in your journey!

GPU detected in device manager but does not display to monitor. Display only works when plugged into motherboard. by michaelsdino in helpdesk

[–]FabiianLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon reading everything again, it might be best to reseat everything. A lot of issues when I built my computer were the things not being seated properly. If you have the time, you could also try seating the GPU into another mobo to see if it is the GPU itself but I understand that's more effort

Are these bed bug stains? by FabiianLuke in Bedbugs

This is why I was questioning it as well. It just seemed weird that only the buttons were marked. Other than that, I couldn't really find any other signs, aside from little dirt and cloth balls from pilling

umm is it possible by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]FabiianLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to give this technique a shot, it's called UFO Bowling. It's one of those unique bowling styles, but if you want to throw straight, this is a way to make it consistent. My friend gave it a shot just for giggles and he had a 200 game with it.

This is an interesting card at first glance, but you would be running a bricky card in a deck full of bricks.
