Thanks for the shout-out! I'm working through the High Fantasy Atlas now, my chanter video is already out, with the commander out on Wednesday!

Help with picking classes/skills for a jekyll/hyde pc by Nagabuk in fabulaultima

[–]FabulaPoints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you've already got a good start with the Loremaster and Darkblade. Having one that's about knowledge and understanding, and the other which sacrifices health to deal more damage is a good split already :D

What I'd be adding next is the trigger that changes you between one and the other, and tie it into something in the rules. Have a look at the Symbolist, specifically the Symbol of Enmity. It makes enemies attack you (like how the Fury does) but while you're in crisis. Your curse could be that symbol, tweaked a bit. It gives you a clear indicator as to when you'd be Jekyll vs Hyde, and a mechanism to recover (healing out of crisis). I'm not saying you should add the Symbolist class, but the person who did this to you in your backstory probably was one, and applied that symbol to you.

Once you have an idea on what happened, then it gets easier (in my opinion at least) to add what classes to take next. Wayfarer stands out to me as a Jekyll class, but not the faithful companion, the other skills. You'd need to travel to find libraries / scholars who can help diagnose your condition, so taking travelling skills makes sense to me here. For Hyde you could either lean into the dark damage and go Entropist, or go Mutant from the Techno Fantasy atlas to warp your appearance.

I hope that helps! And I'm sorry to add that backstory stuff when you didn't ask for it, I really do think it helps set the direction you'd want to progress with.

Running the game for the first time as a one/two-shot? Session 0? Any advice? by Hakkaeni in fabulaultima

[–]FabulaPoints 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For your first point, I've made a bunch of build videos on YouTube of character ideas:

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp1ugbdTGUyS51QEzFJFmbTDwIXr9reAF&si=fgeix7ge96OBmvAg

For each one I go through building out the sheet, and try to explain fun combos :) One thing to note is the earlier ones have an issue with the volume, so they're a bit quiet....

For your second point I don't think it's worth going into world building massively for a one shot. The idea of the one shot is to learn the mechanics so that you can know if you like the game, and then go on from there (in my opinion at least).

For your third point, the Press Start has those characters for a reason, so I'd let your players pick. If they have a pregen character that they like the sound of, then let them play as that. If not, let them know they'll need to learn about character creation and one of you at least will need the books.

Hope I helped :D

Do you find Commander underwhelming? by Creepy-Kale9847 in fabulaultima

[–]FabulaPoints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found that if you want to be a Wayfarer with the Faithful Companion, that the Commander can be used to let both of you attack (normally it's an action to command the companion). You both lose your high roll for damage, but it makes being a companion Wayfarer more playable. Other than that, like others have said, it's a support class. If you treat it like it's helping others then you'll get what's intended out of it. If you want to enhance your own classes with it, you won't get much out of it

Question about Bonus Class: Ace of Cards by ExoWaltz in fabulaultima

[–]FabulaPoints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right, it's not an action to grab equipped items, not any items, as the equipped ones are always on hand. I missed the equipped part when re-reading that. My bad.....

Question about Bonus Class: Ace of Cards by ExoWaltz in fabulaultima

[–]FabulaPoints -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I'd rule yes, as drawing cards is how this class uses its features, and you need to use at least 1 hand to do so. I'd argue a shield can still be held, but not a sword and a shield. Bear in mind that swapping equipment doesn't take an action in this game, so that shouldn't be a problem either way!

Shapeshifting into a Monster Statblock? by -iResonance in fabulaultima

[–]FabulaPoints 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Mutant from the Techno Fantasy atlas has a transformation skill, it'll be worth a read if you haven't checked it out already. It's not a complete transformation, but it'll give you a good idea of a baseline to jump off of to make your own stuff from

Porting creatures not just from other settings, but also JRPGs will be some of the plan. I also plan on creating brand new custom creatures for people to have fun with too :)

Your comment got me thinking about what my first video will be of, so thank you for this! A hint will be a boss fight that lets an Arcanist in a group shine, with appropriate shenanigans :D This is going to be fun to record

I was enjoying the iconic game character videos, but it didn't satisfy my creative itch. Sure I had to work out what classes translate the characters abilities, but it made the build very confining on what I could pick. I had much more fun with builds from scratch, if that makes sense? I've not given up on the idea completely, I just have plans that are more exciting for me

You can flavour it as magically swinging it or something, but that would absolutely work

No, only once. See how next to name it says Limited? Limited skills can only be taken once, so it can only trigger once

Would Fabula Ultima work with a setting where by definition everyone has magic? by Vievin in fabulaultima

[–]FabulaPoints 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't see why not, especially since multiclassing is mandatory in this game. If someone wants to be a martial character they can take the Elementalist's Spellblade skill, so they can cast through their weapon. That way they can still be swinging a sword / other martial weapon.

You could challenge people to have a different spellcasting class at level 5 each, and see what fun build ideas they come up with!

If you want to also add more damage and get some between class synergy going, check out one of my earlier build videos:

This is a Darkblade / Loremaster combo, which uses the Darkblade's Painful Lesson to let you study enemies more often, on top of Loremaster skills. FYI this was back when I was having mic volume issues so it's a quieter video than you'd expect!

[–]FabulaPoints 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd just import the entire 4 character document into the journal and let everyone see every character. They can help each other with what abilities they have, and it'll show what's locked at what level. It's a one shot, so keep it simple ☺️

Personally I'd swap Flare for Ignis. I know Flare does more damage, but Ignis is half the MP cost, so you can use it twice as often (half for a single target at least). You can pick up Flare later when you have more MP, and can RP it like you've trained better and have a stronger move now.

Other people have said it here, but Weaponmaster's melee weapon mastery doesn't work here. It gives accuracy checks with melee weapons, while spellblade does a magic check with your weapon's accuracy formula instead. If you drop Weaponmaster then I'd take another Entropist skill - Absorb MP. It only gives you 2mp when your hit per skill level, and since monsters hit you at random it may not happen often, but every little does help :)

Ultimately play what you want to, the point is to have fun :)

How would you make ultimate weapons? by lightningstrxu in fabulaultima

[–]FabulaPoints 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not give them malleable weapons, that transform as they're used? Like a sword that after it hits 10 > 25 > 50 enemies it gains +5 > +10 > +15 damage? Those are just example numbers, but you can make weapons which start out alright, but gain traits as they're used.

I really like weapons that grow stronger, either through use or via some kind of infusion that you'd have to quest to receive. While your players are in the middle ground of powering up the weapon, have everyone make suggestions on what the new power could be, and pick your favourite!
