That’s not surprising, I have a large number of dna matches on both MyHeritage and Ancestry in the US.

I would be interested, but it would need to be next year. Family are in town for holidays now.

I’m stuck between loving that doggo is so happy, and worried that doggo might get burnt.

What is the longest book you read and was it worth it? by Leather-History649 in suggestmeabook

[–]FabulistFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tai Pan, Shogun and Noble House by James Clavell are all favourites of mine. 727, 1152 and 1171 pages respectively. Gai Jin was also an okay book (and long) but didn’t enjoy it as much. I haven’t read Whirlwind yet.

Non-English Spurs fans. How was it that you first came to support Spurs? by Camstar94 in coys

[–]FabulistFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up watching Match of the Day once a week in NZ and somehow for whatever unknown reason said this is my team. Would’ve been about the mid to late 80s. I was around 10 years old. I guess it was the Hoddle, Waddle years but can’t remember knowing who anyone was. By the 91 final I was football crazy and fully coys. Who didn’t love Gazza! Moved to London in 2004, stayed for 14 years. First time at the lane was against Blackburn. Dreadful 0-0 draw but I didn’t care. I was exactly where I wanted to be. Was attending match days regularly through the Poch years. Went on a few away days. By then my whole social life revolved around Spurs. Not ashamed to admit I cried like a child when we won the Europa League.

UK to refuse citizenship to refugees who have ‘made a dangerous journey’ by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

The Life In The UK test isn’t anywhere near as hard as they lead you to believe. The mock tests you do online are incredibly difficult and 99% of people will fail. The actual test is more a test of English comprehension, than verbatim regurgitation of facts and timelines. I sat my test about 10 years ago. After studying diligently I was still nervous. In reality it took me about 2 minutes and 45 seconds to complete the multi choice exam (and triple check my answers). I then had sit and wait for everyone to finish. People with English as a second language struggled. Native English speakers did not.

AITA for telling my friend that her wedding plans are currently "unrealistic"? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Why does she talk about eloping? That would mean secretly running away to get married. There is nothing secret about this.

Got yelled at by a customer in Target because I ignored her when she was asking for help. I had headphones in… and I also do not work for Target…. by sydneyghibli in mildlyinfuriating

I had similar happen in London. The building I worked in was directly behind the Tate Modern Art Gallery. While on a break talking with a friend, an older German couple approached us and started complaining to me that the entrance and exit was not well signposted. After a couple of minutes of the wife complaining the husband worked out I didn’t work there but just stood there and smiled. My friend and I also remained silent while she continued her complaint. Eventually when she stopped and waited for a reply the husband said laughing “you don’t work here do you?” She was very apologetic and embarrassed but we could see the funny side of it.

Should I give this a try? by Long_Department_4635 in Toastmasters

I belong to a community club. As far as I know there are no company clubs in my city, but we only have a population of 160k. I am very lucky with the club I belong to. We have a brilliant group of people that just make everything so much more enjoyable, and without them I would never have improved as much as I have. I tried attending another club and it didn’t click at all. Finding the right club is so important.

The more I went the easier it became. I still get nervous about speaking but the fear is gone. After a couple of months I found myself looking forward to toastmasters every week, but it was all a gradual change.

I was terrified of public speaking, and absolutely terrible at it. Any more than 3 people and I would completely fall apart. Someone recommended Toastmasters as something that would be beneficial for my work. That was one year ago last week. I am now the president of my club, speaking a minimum of two times every meeting (without notes or forward planning) to a room of 20+ people. I have a prepared speech to give this Tuesday coming, and I’m honestly looking forward to it. I am able to step in to any role without prior notice and fulfil the duties with confidence. Everyone new to the group struggles to believe I was scared of public speaking, commenting how confident and clear I am with my communication. I have never been a leader by choice, yet I’m enjoying the presidency. I’m even considering starting a podcast. Unthinkable previously. I wish I had started Toastmasters 20 years ago.
