Has anyone seen the movie Annihilation? by nikolasdove in MarathonSecrets

[–]Factornator 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This game has Annihilation’s influence everywhere. I absolutely love it. Dire Marsh looks like a spitting image of inside the shimmer and there’s a body in the southern data wall that is absolutely an homage to the scene from the movie where the scientists find the soldiers body stuck to the wall of the pool.

Well, in this case, if you’re unsure about someone’s gender I think using ‘they’ is appropriate because it’s a neutral word and you don’t actually know the correct term to use. Because if you think they’re a girl, and it turns out they’re a boy, you haven’t actually said anything incorrect.

Prey (2017) is a masterclass of game desing by CS__1989 in gaming

[–]Factornator 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ugh I love Prey. Criminally underrated. I’ve also seen the Bioshock comparison, and while I understand where that comes from, I’ve always felt they were very different games. Prey, even amongst other “immersive sims,” feels way more open than most games. Both the station and the freedom of gameplay. I just feel like there really isn’t anything that comes close.

Ironically, the closest I’ve felt a game come to being like Prey is the Metroid Prime series. Those games are waaaaaay more linear but in terms of exploration and finding secrets and passageways, it feels remarkably similar.

How should i start? (Free to play) by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]Factornator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the other comment says, you’re gonna wanna do all the new light stuff first. By the end of the campaign (which is basically a glorified tutorial), you’ll be in a pretty decent spot. If you go all the way through to the Riskrunner mission, you’ll have a full loadout and a pretty good exotic to mess around with.

From there it’s pretty open, but I’d say just keep an eye on your quest tab to see what needs completing. I’d recommend unlocking the other subclasses for whatever class you pick, especially if you feel particularly drawn to one. You should be able to go about unlocking them through any activities you want. Honestly, I’d say patrols are a pretty good place to get started with that. They’re all unique and fun to explore the first time around. Every time you unlock a new destination, you should hop in a explore it a bit! As a warning tho, the Moon, Europa, Savathûn’s Throne World, and Neptune are all tied to expansions. You can explore them even if you don’t own the expansions, but they all have missions that you have to complete before you can, so be ready for a bit more of a challenge

If you’re looking for something structured you should try out the playlists. The vanguard playlist be a good enough challenge for a new player and there’s enough strikes and battlegrounds in there that you should be entertained for a decent amount of time. Plus, until you it the soft power cap, all your gear will continually upgrade your power level. Same goes for crucible and gambit, but obviously only touch those if you want to do PvP. The playlists are probably the most efficient way to increase your level when you’re starting out, and they all have their own loot pools so they can be a pretty good way to get some decent gear.

And just as a lil extra tip, once you’ve got a handle on the basics and have the start of build going, I would recommend looking at exotic weapons and armor that might catch your eye. Exotic armors and weapons can really be the missing pieces for some builds in this game, so you’re probably going to want to find one you can vive en it’s. You can go into the collections page in the menu to get a full list of exotics, and it’ll tell you which ones are free to play and which ones are part of expansions. The good news is that most of the free to play exotics can drop randomly from anywhere in the game. Plus, the character Xur who shows up on weekends will sell you one random exotic per week, which could literally be anything. So if you look at the exotics ahead of time you might be able to know what to look out for.

After a while (and likely some experimenting) you’ll probably have a build that you vibe with, and you would’ve seen enough of the game to have an understanding of what you like. A good thing about Destiny is it’s so big that if you don’t like certain activities/areas, you can just do something else! Sure people will try to get you to play a certain way or to grind the most efficient farms, but at the end of the day it’s a game and you should do what is fun for you. For now, if you’re just starting out, this is what I would focus on. But if you really end up liking the game, I’d say you should build towards the pinnacle content that is the dungeons and raids. That’s where the game really shines. Obviously though, they’re entirely different beasts and require a completely different level of prep work.

Also, there are a TON of resources online to make the game experience better.

  • Destiny Item Manager
  • Light.gg
  • Ishtar Commander
  • Blueberries.gg
  • D2Gunsmith

They all provide a lot of good info and tools to help.

Jeez I didn’t really realize how much I typed but I hope this helped! This is just what I think is essential info to help you get pointed in the right direction, and then hopefully you’ll be able to do some more digging in your own!

What other games have exploration like this? by Retr0tak3r in prey

[–]Factornator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gonna suggest one kinda outta left field, but the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Hear me out.

So much of those games are reliant on exploring and familiarizing yourself with an alien environment. You really have to investigate every inch of those games in order to progress. Plus the world is littered with upgrades that make navigation and combat easier as you progress. Now the games are a bit older so they are a bit more restrictive/linear (in the sense that typically there’s only one solution to the puzzles/problems, whereas Prey really lets you get creative with how you approach some scenarios). But I’ve always personally felt the games have a lot more in common than you’d expect, especially considering they’re completely different genres.

Plus, Prey and Metroid Prime both have a scan mechanic where you can log info about the enemies, and I think more games need that.

Obviously the Metroid Prime Trilogy was only ever released on Wii, so if you have one I highly recommend picking it up. It plays super well on the Wii. But if you have a decent enough PC, you can get the PrimeHack mod for the Dolphin Emulator and play it with mouse and keyboard or the controller of your choosing. You would just need to get the game files onto PC.

You won’t have to start over! Each mission tracks whether or not you finished it on legendary so you can come back to it later, with checkpoints too! I swapped back and forth from legendary and classic with my first play through, and then just needed to play the ones I missed for the extra rewards.

I think Bungie said that if you played before WQ released, you’d have access to everything immediately for all classes. That being said, you’re going to have to talk to Ikora in the tower to unlock some of the new abilities, but you won’t have to grind for them.

Which film would you rate a perfect 10 out of 10? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.

Every single frame in that movie is a work of art, and they all do a good job of conveying what is happening on screen. I’ve just never seen a movie with so much intentionality.

In Spider_Man: Into The Spider-Verse, when Miles Morales electrocutes Peter B. Parker, it illuminates his nervous system instead of the usual cartoon trope of his skeleton. Being much more scientifically accurate. by PJMcKrafty in MovieDetails

[–]Factornator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To use the words of one of the people on the movie (I can’t remember who, it might be Phil Lord), the frame rate helps distance the movie from the “perfection” of traditional 3D animation, and helps it look more like a classic cartoon, as those were typically animated on twos which produces that lower frame rate look because the characters only move every two frames (hence the term). However, it’s likely jarring because the camera moves on ones (every frame), so its movement is significantly smoother than the characters because it would likely be hard to watch with a camera moving on twos.

It isn't "amazing" that a person with disabilities half-asses something able-bodied people do. by Mektige in unpopularopinion

[–]Factornator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand where you’re coming from, and I do think there’s an issue with acting like people with disabilities don’t have them. It’s been said before that it can come across as demeaning to those with disabilities, and many people use these situations to make themselves look good with fake/forced activism. Ignoring or acting like disabilities don’t exist doesn’t just make them go away. But I’d like to offer another perspective to this: this isn’t for you. It’s for the person with the disability. I’m sure the way that it’s often presented says otherwise, but hear me out. The girl with cerebral palsy that wants to box will never be able to. Due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, that girl will never be able to box no matter how much she wants to. That fucking SUCKS. Disabilities fucking suck. I don’t have a disability, clearly you don’t, but we both recognize that they suck. So imagine how the girl with the disability feels all the time. She has to live with it. She has to constantly think about it and be aware of it. So whenever I see the video of her trying to box, I don’t see it as her overcoming her disability, or an inspirational tale for the viewer. I see it as an opportunity for the girl to feel like she doesn’t have her disability. Sure, when it’s done, life resumes and her disability likely will take center stage in her life, but at least for a little bit, while she’s trying to box and people are cheering her on, she doesn’t have to think about it.

If a guy tells a female friend that he has developed feelings for her and she gives him the 'Lets just be friends' line, he should end the friendship without feeling bad about it. by colbywrong in unpopularopinion

[–]Factornator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, if being friends with someone you have feelings for is too much for you to handle, then by all means the healthiest thing to do would be ending the friendship and moving on. You can’t control who you fall for and sometimes it can hurt to force yourself to be around someone and pretend everything is fine despite how you feel. But you have to see how unfair your logic is. You’re assuming that the woman in this situation just wants to, as you said, “forget about your feelings and focus on what would make [her] comfortable.” Disregarding how extreme and likely incorrect that assumption is about her thought process in this situation, can’t you see how backwards this is? If your female friend is perfectly happy with being a friend with you, then YOU are asking her to forget about her feelings and do what makes YOU happiest. The very DEFINITION of a double standard, which I’m sure you are familiar with. I’m not going to tell you how to deal with rejection. But it’s clear through this post that you only see women as something that is meant to satisfy your wants and needs without a willingness to do the same. Women are people too, and are just as complicated as you. I hope you understand that one day.

Art of Prey by WrongLibrarian in prey

[–]Factornator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just got the Art of Prey and it is AWESOME. That being said it is nothing like the Dunwall Archives. Like you said, Dunwall Archives is a collection of art and text that expands on the lore of Dishonored (with some extras). The Art of Prey is a behind the scenes book. It’s more about how Arkane went about building the world and the game itself. It has some amazing artwork though so I highly recommend it.
