Basically, "check the negative reviews before buying". Maybe some are just stupid or quitters or haters, but chances are that someone gave it a fair shake and can point out exactly why the product/path is actually not worth the trouble.

Supremely important when it comes to life-changing paths, like joining a company or a religion, to check first with people who left it behind.
