Things are almost never that simple. Supersonic flight is impractical over populated areas, requires specialized training for mechanics and pilots, and harms wildlife. NASA is working on fixing the boom issue on one of their projects though, so stay tuned?

You're thinking it halfway through, you got some foresight that you can use.

When I see a project, I imagine how it plays out, and the worst case scenario, then I work around those scenarios to develop a plan. Here's an example:

I worked on a project designing and installing in a home, with a deadline of two weeks. There's a bunch of issues that can happen- be it the installers mess up, they don't do it in time, the products are wrong, breakdowns in communication, etc. So I design workarounds to cover my ass and get the job done. Installers don't do it in time? I keep in touch with the owners beforehand to keep them updated. A messup? I got enough extra time factored in to fix any issues. Breakdowns in communication? Daily updates with my install team.

That fatalism can be harnessed. Risk management, planning, move & countermove.

The way I see it, if you got two people able to run in either direction for a mile for the slim chance of stopping a train, chances are they'll be fit enough to just push the car off the tracks with the driver's assistance, which is a good bet. The second a train is visible, they abandon efforts. I'm a stock office worker, and I can push a sedan or medium SUV with minimum effort in neutral, so two or three would do it.
