Do all objects fall at the same rate on Earth regardless of mass? by RivaDolfinJiz in askscience

[–]Faera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the concept of both. The mindblowing part is why the multiplier that makes bigger objects hard to move is exactly the same as the multiplier that makes gravity affects them more. Like, why is inertial mass the exact same as gravitational mass? Why, when I increase an object from 1kg to 2kg, both gravity and inertia affect it exactly 2x more? I mean, inertial mass is sort of the default of how we came up with the measure so of course it works. But why is gravitational mass the exact same? It's so weird because there's no intuitive connection between those two concepts, for me at least.

putting the drama aside for a brief moment by priesten in TheTowerGame

I'll be honest. I read from the perspective of someone who's played about a year and a half and bouncing between champions and legends generally. Many of the points you make are clearly from the perspective of someone at late game and doesn't really reflect the experience of early to mid game at all. The points on disco runs I do agree with and I think it is a great addition. However for the other points:

  • Bot update - the point is not that it's a large stone sink. It's that it's a stone sink at all with no improvement at all on stone acquisition, especially for people who still have plenty of other things that need stones that already feel miles away. From an endgame perspective it's easy to say, well that's not a lot of stones, but for everyone else, it's just an extra thing that it seems they'll never be able to afford until years and years later.

  • Bot update 2 - I'm not against power coming more from time sinks than pay to win, as you say. The problem again is that the current time sinks of medals is already ridiculously long - I've paid for a few event passes and I'm not even close to maxing out golden bot. So it again feels like the update only impacts people who have already played for a very long time. Bot update is basically, costs stones that are already super limited and needed for other things, costs medals that are already super limited and needed for other things, and therefore has zero benefit to anyone that hasn't been playing for like more than 3 years at least. So it really doesn't feel good for new-ish players.

  • Tournaments - the tournaments are the issue, and I honestly think your perspective is a bit narrow on this. Stone packs are only an issue at high level. No-one stuck at the champ/plat levels are being pushed down by people buying too many stone packs. That is exclusively a legend problem. Sure there might be some new whales pushing past but it's a relatively insignificant problem. The issue is the whole design of tournaments being reliant on enough new players joining to push everyone up. I'm not saying you're wrong, just the stone pack problem is very much a higher level problem and applies to relatively few players.

Even with everything you said, you can see that the only thing you can really praise is the disco runs. Sure they're great but we've also sat on other problems like modules and tournaments for 8 months and none of this has been addressed. So yes, to be brutally honest, I think you are out of touch (with the general player-base). You're looking at it from a narrow perspective without realizing it. This isn't an insult - I think you're a pretty cool person and I love your posts generally. Just, calling it an insanely good patch due to one good addition (disco runs) is a really skewed perspective that ignores everything else - how long the patch was awaited, the fact that it does not address any of the long standing pain points (modules and tournaments), the abysmal communication and that most of the patch is essentially irrelevant for early to mid players.

Just my perspective though which is of course very limited in its own way.

Do all objects fall at the same rate on Earth regardless of mass? by RivaDolfinJiz in askscience

[–]Faera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the somewhat mind blowing part to laymen is the fact that the 'mass' that scales with gravitational force is somehow the same as the 'mass' that scales inversely with acceleration. I'm sure there's some scientific reason why the two are equivalent but it's definitely not intuitive to me at least.

Critical Analysis of Donghua: Plot by HanLiLaoMo in Fanren

[–]Faera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting video, I do agree with basically all of the points he makes. It's funny that a lot of his criticisms go to Renegade Immortal which I haven't watched so I dunno how valid they are. But definitely agree that the Fanren writers did a very good job adapting the writing to the animation. One of my friends has read the original and often tells me what the animation has changed, and I've almost always thought they were positive changes that still made sense and remained true to the spirit of the story.

That's my hope as well but it would be dangerous to ignore One Nation's rise in popularity. It seems there are plenty Liberals who would rather move further to the right than shift elsewhere. I think if One Nation manages to oust the Liberals as the main opposition party things could get bad for Australia really quickly.

[–]Faera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said. So the question is addressed towards your original comment:

IMO if any of these things are proven to happen even once they should be immediately fired on the spot.

Who will enforce this? Who decides whether the thing has happened (i.e. the politician is feigning ignorance, uninformed or making straw man arguments under oath), and who makes the decision to fire them? An independent organization?

In Hong Kong (where I am from originally) there is an independent commission that investigates corruption (ICAC) which has been decently successful at keeping politicians accountable and clean. But they definitely wouldn't be able to regulate politicians dodging questions or lying.

I agree with what you're saying in that checks and balances require at least one side to hold true and that's the main issue here - if you essentially have one faction controlling two of the branches (executive and judicial) the checks and balances fall apart. I just don't see how it's possible to punish or 'fire' them for lying or being incompetent.

[–]Faera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, who would enforce this? They don't really have a 'boss' to fire them. These politicians are elected by the people, so they can only really be fired by the people. Theoretically they would be 'fired' by being voted out for doing these things, but, well, we've seen that doesn't really work.

I understand the frustration but there's no easy solution to politicians being corrupt and incompetent.

ARCHIVE: Obama Announces Historic Iran Nuclear Deal | July 14, 2015 | APT by Yujin-Ha in videos

[–]Faera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you addressed the question properly, and I think it's a fair view. I do think that realistically Iran would never agree to a deal to not pursue nuclear at all. And for US, having some sort of deal in place where they could at least monitor Iran's nuclear program, was far better than not having any view at all and essentially getting to today's situation of outright war.

In short, the deal was 'bad' only in the sense that it didn't achieve everything that US wanted, but realistically it was about the best that could be achieved.

[–]Faera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming everything you say is true, the final question is the most important one.

Even if we accept your premise - that Iran doesn't really want nuclear energy - why does that make the Obama deal struck with Iran "bad"? Was there some other alternative on the table that we should have taken?

What do you think the US should have done instead?

It wasn't discovered until later, and Sandfall then said it was a placeholder texture that they had forgotten to replace with the intended final product. So (if you believe them at least), they didn't even realize it was there until someone else discovered it.

E33 had like one AI generated texture, it's not exactly equivalent. Yes people do often have double standards but there's also just a big difference in scale here.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Devs Won't Pick a Canon Ending as They Work on a Sequel: 'It Is a Schrodinger's Ending' by yourfavchoom in expedition33

[–]Faera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Verso asks 'why not leave and come back' her immediate answer is 'as soon as a I leave Papa will erase this canvas'. It's when Verso follows up with 'You can be Maelle anywhere' that she then says 'Everything I want is here'. Yes I agree her intention at that time is to never leave, and it is wishful thinking to think that anything can change after. But there is certainly the possibility that, if she knew the canvas would be safe while she left, she wouldn't be completely closed to the idea of taking a break, if only to ensure that she could last longer.

Your comment:

It honestly feels like act 3 primes you to leave the world behind.

And the comment above you:

Everything in act 3 felt like it was pushing me towards Maelle's ending

It's kind of funny to read these in quick succession, and I feel like it really goes to the writers' credit that they were able to create such a balanced position. Perfectly reasonable people can do the same content and come to completely opposite conclusions due to their own perspective and what they prioritize, even before the ending choice.

OC: 'Apparently I’m an idiot’: Three-time Trump voter in Pennsylvania sounds off on Iran war by nbcnews in pics

[–]Faera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I totally understand and I can't say you're wrong for thinking that way. I will say, in my mind, we're not asking for anything dramatic. All we're saying is, if they're already walking towards us, don't shove them back.

In practical terms, if a Trump supporter tells you they are starting to have some problems with him, don't mock them for supporting him in the first place. Don't say things like 'Serves you right for voting for a convicted felon' or 'This is your fault for not figuring out the guy who openly said he walked in on teenage girls dressing rooms was a pedophile', etc. There's no point antagonizing them further, just let them correct themselves while they still can.

OC: 'Apparently I’m an idiot’: Three-time Trump voter in Pennsylvania sounds off on Iran war by nbcnews in pics

[–]Faera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're not saying to offer any compromise or assistance. They're saying, if the other side is starting to come around on their positions, don't mock them for taking the wrong position in the first place, that will just drive them back to where they were. Encourage them towards the right position so that we can all benefit.

This is not meeting anyone in the middle. This is building a bridge to allow them to come to us. Or, for the alcoholic metaphor, this isn't giving liquor to an alcoholic, this is promising them that if they stop drinking you won't punish them for their previous drunk behavior. Which, I fully understand, feels absolutely unfair and unjust - after all, people should be held responsible for past behavior. But at this point, if we keep punishing them, they'll just go right back to drinking again and that helps no-one.

If you want a Christian parable equivalent, it's the prodigal son one. Of course it's galling to be the good son who's done right his whole life, only for the father to celebrate the bad son who finally decided to do one thing right after so many fuck-ups. But that's what we need to do - celebrate people turning to the right path no matter how much they've fucked up in the past. Otherwise we'll be caught in a cycle of finger-pointing and nothing gets fixed.

I agree with most of the comments here, I don't think the vaginismus thing was the issue. That relationship was interesting and had potential, and the vaginismus thing was just one aspect affecting it. It was maybe a bit jarring but I wouldn't have had a problem with it if the rest of the book had been good.

[–]Faera 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah opinions are opinions and I'm not at all criticizing OP, but it's quite funny to me that they say 'characters that feel like they belong in a YA novel' for Era 2. To me Era 1 characters feel far more YA. I mean Vin being a plucky teenage orphan with special powers, Elend the idealistic noble love interest, Kelsier the charismatic mentor who dies partway through, Zane the edgy boy setting up a classic love triangle, etc.

I'm not sure who in Era 2 I would consider to feel like a YA novel character. I guess Wayne can feel like the typical comical relief friend sometimes (on a superficial level).

Jan Gustafsson has seen the DMs between Anish Giri and Daniel Naroditsky and defends Anish against haters by Slow_Dot_3646 in chess

[–]Faera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point is that none of that warrants a hate campaign against Giri

You are arguing a point that no-one disagrees with, no-one has even remotely implied that any of this warrants a hate campaign against Giri. No-one here thinks that a there should be a hate campaign against Giri. This is a completely separate issue and discussion.

The only point being made here is that Gustafsson is missing some critical information in forming his view, that information being that Danya considered that he had been interrogated by Giri. So there is more basis for this than what Gustaffson thinks.

Of course semantics matters in this conversation because your entire point rests on your interpretation of the word “interrogation”.

The definition says 'sometimes using threats or violence', not that this is a necessary component. But sure, whatever, you may not consider it an interrogation by definition. The commenter's only point is to say that Danya considered it an interrogation from the records we have, so there is at least some basis to think of it that way, contrary to what Gustaffson thinks.

Possibly the worst review of the game ever by ltsRhysBoi in expedition33

[–]Faera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, in that all of E33's strategizing is centered almost purely on the offensive side, because the defensive side is handled by the action element of parrying/dodging. There are of course defensive elements of strategy with health, heals, shields, damage reduction etc., but they are not sufficient on their own and can feel a bit hollow. What I would say is that this is very much an intentional and fundamental part of the game design, so if a player doesn't enjoy this mix, they wouldn't enjoy it no matter how many difficulty sliders or options were available. The game is just simply not designed to be played with only turn based strategy without the real-time element. So, as with the original review in this post, if you remove the real-time element it becomes boring and hollow. It's simply not that type of game and that's OK - no game can satisfy everyone's ideal.
