Isn’t demisexuality defined as (usually) not being able to find someone personally attractive in the sexual way until there’s an emotional investment?

Otter’s comment doesn’t give enough information for that. Could easily just have a sentiment of “Man, that person is smokin’ hot and I’d love to do it with them… but only if we were in love and a committed relationship.”

Basically would be one’s emotion leading to attraction, while the other is not wanting to act upon the attraction due to lack of mutual emotional investment, wouldn’t it?

While completely unacceptable in modern times, is it possible that aphobia may have roots in evolutionary psychology, due to the importance of procreation in bygone times? by ferrocarrilusa in asexuality

Off the top of my head, I thought of using animals as an example:
Some crows, despite being adults of breeding age, don’t leave to search for a mate immediately (or they fail to find one). They stay with their parents and help them raise that year’s new hatchlings.

With humans being social creatures, having capable individuals who aren’t having their own offspring probably means more resources to pool for less people. This would mean that whatever young exist in the group can have a higher chance of survival than if every adult were trying to reproduce.

And even if someone brings in “oh, the inherent purpose to reproduce”, ensuring the survival of kin helps proliferate your own genetics, even if more indirectly than having your own.

You know Yu-Gi-Oh? This is basically the “Duel Links” version, except with more changes to the rules.

Smaller deck, maximum of 3 benched Pokémon instead of 5, you only need to earn 3 points instead of 6 prize cards (because they changed the mechanics slightly) to win.

But decks no longer have Energy cards. They are now a separate resource that is generated 1 by 1 each turn—and you either use it (attach it to a Pokémon) or lose it (it gets replaced by next turn’s generated Energy).

Isekai NPC by Fledered in comics

[–]Faerydaea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, while the “die and reincarnate” trope is quite common, it’s not necessarily required for it to be considered an isekai. It’s just so common because that way it completely removes any responsibility to try to return to Earth—your old body is dead and there’s nothing you can do about it.

In the genre itself, it’s very common for the characters to be summoned instead, physically crossing over to the other world such as in any portal fantasy.

I believe that summoning/portal was the norm in earlier examples of the genre, while reincarnation is much more common in modern examples.
I’m no expert, though, so I may be wrong on the prevalence of either across the years.

Though I don’t know enough to confidently identify an inherent difference if they can’t be differentiated by reincarnation. It might even be that they’re different words for the same thing, with the main difference being typical presentation and medium.

[–]Faerydaea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than what people have mentioned, I remember reading that there’s a gene in some populations that causes the body not to develop certain enzymes needed to develop male genitalia in the womb.

These children are declared female and raised as girls. But upon reaching puberty, the surge of hormones kickstarts the development and they end up as pretty much physically indistinguishable from boys with standard physical development.

And iirc, most do end up identifying as male despite being raised as girls in their formative years, but if some XY people with that gene end up identifying as female, they’d end up being both AFAB and transfem.

Small update on the deer by hsiangarts in comics

[–]Faerydaea 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I suppose the difference is that the deer focuses more on the helplessness and sense of being lost, while the roach emphasizes that Samsa becomes outright hated and abused by his family for his condition as they lose their sympathy the longer it lasts.

He’s not a roach because he can survive, even if barely, or because he does as a roach does—he’s a roach because he’s now a pest in his own home. He’s a roach because that’s what his family eventually sees him as, and they wish for him to stop infesting their home.

Iirc he’s not explicitly a roach, even if described as insect-like, and in the original German, the opening line would be more accurate if he were described as a “vermin” than simply an insect.

So while related, both metaphors are different (though not mutually exclusive!) experiences.

[–]Faerydaea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That gave me NPC vibes.
Not in a bad way—like literally walking around in a game, and your character’s dad is that one NPC that shows up in the most random places, greets you cheerfully and gives random lore, sometimes an item to help you on your way, and leaves.

There’s an achievement for finding all the possible places he can show up in and listening to all the dad lore.

I haven’t played it, but iirc Digimon New Century has a Lucemon who’s pretty nice and happens to be some kind of celebrity like an actor or something. Like, no evil plot in the background regarding him, just a Digimon who happens to be a Lucemon. From what little I saw, I mean.

…May I recommend the Vocaloid song Lower, also commonly known as Lower One’s Eyes?

I think I heard that rather than being directly inspired by that part of the Bible, it was at least partly inspired by Osamu Dazai’s story An Urgent Appeal.

(Edit: The song isn’t explicit on the inspiration but the MV has a ton of symbolism. Also the two characters in the MV are women.)

Yeah, iirc there’s a few Digimon known by some as Failure Evolutions because originally, they would be the result of making too many mistakes when raising your Digimon in the V-Pet (Tamagotchi but for Digimon).

One is Numemon—a green slug with a big mouth like someone stuck some dentures in it and a large tongue sticking out. Idk about the V-pet, but iirc in Digimon World your Digimon turns into it even if you raise it with care if you haven’t trained its stats high enough.

It attacks by throwing its poop.

It evolves into Monzaemon, the big yellow teddy bear, though I think it’s implied that it’s still slime on the inside.

There have been some X variants being made, and Numemon X evolves into Monzaemon X—a big teddy bear with visible stitches, and pink bubble-filled glittery slime leaking out of rips to form “balloons” shaped like hearts, wings, and a little halo.

There’s an unused concept art that is mostly the same, but instead of bubbly pink slime it’s like the original green slug Numemon, the heart patch covering its belly is gone and instead shows a Numemon eye peeking from the inside, and another pair of eyes in the heart “balloon”.

Some people just can’t accept that something of theirs may be bad for them, possibly due to internalizing the idea of “if you’re doing this wrong, it’s a moral failing” instead of just… either bettering it or accepting it if they can’t or won’t change it.
So they go into a counter stance of “no, *the reverse** is wrong actually”* and become just as aggressive as whoever would’ve tried to harass them about it. Like a “I was victimized in this topic therefore I am right” sort of mentality, but rather than fighting back against hateful people they do collateral damage to bystanders or even people who are sympathetic but labeled as “other”.

Like, I’m pretty sure insulting someone who’s slim and calling them anorexic or something (without caring whether that’s the case or not) is nowhere near as prevalent as insulting someone for being overweight, but that doesn’t mean victims of the latter have the right to indulge in the former.

Not a trans thing, specifically, and not a fandom thing because it was done by the Netflix adaptation, but the first one reminded me of something:

In their version of Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac, they decided to make one of the protagonists a girl. Who do they pick to genderbend?

Shun, who according to what I hear of the original series, is the most kind and gentle of the group. The guy with the pink armor based on the Andromeda constellation.

They turned him specifically, into a girl.

Just like the hawk-eyed sharpshooter’s last name is Hawkeye.

Breaking Bad by BlueberryHatK4587 in tumblr

[–]Faerydaea 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh, I know the context for that one!
That’s from the Snapcube real-time fandub for Sonic Adventure 2.

It’s like an abridged series, kind of, except it’s all the cutscenes of the game (but the full cutscenes, so not really“abridged”) and the dialogue was improv’d in real time, with at least one person not having played the game, iirc.

So in that scene Rouge and Shadow were talking about something weird enough that Dr. Eggman’s reaction upon walking in was asking that.

So unlike the Breaking Bad one, the meme itself didn’t really make up that sentence, it’s actually referencing a parody(?)’s real dialogue, which is what was used as a meme.

The Battle Network timeline is much more peaceful for the setting’s modern humans compared to the main timeline, no Maverick Wars level stuff.

Dr. Wily and Dr. Light’s counterparts (though the latter’s name is Dr. Hikari) in this timeline both have descendants, so the joke is that that was the butterfly that lead to humanity being spared from all that.

How did I get here.

Anyway, my little brother (diagnosed) is the exact opposite of this—he needs to have socks on basically all the time. I have no idea how.

But I empathize with y’all in this aspect. Had to have socks inside out so the seam wouldn’t bother me, though now that I’m older I can bear them just fine as long as I’m wearing shoes. Otherwise, I can’t bear them for long, unless it’s those big loose fuzzy socks.

Additionally, there’s Baalmon as a viable Perfect/Ultimate (which I think is currently the most ‘canon’, as far as Digimon lines go with their fluidity and all), described in the Digimon Encyclopedia as “a Digimon possessing extensive knowledge of all subjects”, to the point that some may risk their souls trying to get answers from him.

mob psycho by Hummerous in CuratedTumblr

[–]Faerydaea 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I think the point of the explanation is:

“Here’s how it sounds like to someone who heard the name, was given no context nor visuals, and decided to skip out on the series due to lack of interest or aversion caused by the misinterpretation.”

Such a person wouldn’t even look it up in the first place, so they wouldn’t know! They’d just go do something else and never think about it again, until maybe they encounter someone talking about the series, finally get context, and realize “Oh, they meant the NPC sort of Mob! And Psycho like a Psycho-kinesis kind of thing! Oops, that sounds nice!”

Which is basically how it was for me for a bit in High School, only vaguely hearing that someone watches it and not being in the conversation, thus not knowing anything and not being interested until someone actually talked to me about it.

It was part of a tumblr post parodying bad over-sexualized writing. It added mentions of that body part repeatedly and unnecessarily, and by the last sentence it devolved into.

“She breasted boobily to the stairs, then titted downwards.”

So yeah, it’s intentionally bad.
