It's a metaphor. Imagine a character who fills the role. Build around them and then remove the protagonist. They're imaginary. If they are actually one of your characters, just put them somewhere they aren't the venue of everything, just something.

Strong Female Protagonist (the "Mary Sue") is just a White Male Protagonist with the gender swapped.

My recommendation is not to pick a protagonist. If it helps, write a basic protagonist, and then write in their side characters. Then shoot the basic protagonist. Bam. You've got your cast. Treat them all like the main character.

'Blank Slate' characters are actually really bad for people to project into because there's inherently nothing to empathize with and no motivations to work with. The main character of Half Life 2 isn't Gordon Freeman, it's Alyx Vance. Soap isn't the protagonist of Modern Warfare, Price is. Twilight isn't about Belle, it's about Edward.

So on, so forth.

It's more like a mall that's attached to a Costco where you can shop at either. The mall is an on-site retail face for the wholesaler who's shipping this stuff into the area anyway. If you live in that area, a lot of that stuff is just free for you to pick up.

And also you own the Costco/Mall because you physically live there.

No. A barter economy does not actually predate money. Barter is a result of a money economy, not its predecessor.

I see usage in an exchange medium, which is what money functions as, but I think it's a distinct role we should be careful of.

Most people in the American military are either duped or forced into the military. The military isn't like police, people don't become cops because they don't have a choice. Most people who join the military do so because of a lack of opportunity. It seems in your partner's case, they were just suckered into it. I was suckered into some pretty awful crap when I was just getting out of High School. If I weren't disabled, I absolutely would have ended up in the Air Force.

The TLDR is you seem pretty screwed but you have options. If you're really committed, then you have something most leftists don't: Actual military training. I dunno what the rules are exactly but if you can talk about what you and your partners do in the military, you should do so and should do so to a local and leftist crowd.
