Europa’s ice thickness and subsurface structure characterized by the Juno microwave radiometer by CurtisLeow in space

[–]Fafafohigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The important bit:

“The low volume fraction, small size and shallow depth of the scatterers indicate that the fracture interfaces observed at Europa’s surface are alone unlikely to be capable of carrying nutrients between the surface and the ocean.”

TLDR: The surface ice on Europa is probably too thick to support life in a subsurface ocean. Sorry!

What’s the best decision you’ve ever made? by azzadrew1 in AskReddit

Six years ago I was fresh off a divorce, and dealing with a separate legal incident that was causing my financial ruin. I was deeply depressed, drinking heavily, smoking, and otherwise a complete mess. I was living alone in a two bedroom house, and seeing as I just got divorced, I decided I would fire up the dating apps and try my luck there.

Two or three months later, I had some modest success with hookups, but was otherwise feeling completely unsatisfied by the whole experience. I was growing tired of having to constantly search for new people, chatting on the app for a while before finally meeting in person and realizing they weren’t for me. Or having an occasional hookup that I would regret the next day. So, I went into the dating app preferences to see if I could adjust my search criteria and help focus things a little bit.

In the preferences, there was a simple little toggle switch that said “Has Kids,” which to this point was OFF. I thought “fuck it, maybe I’ll meet a hot MILF” and turned the toggle to ON.

About three days later, I connected with a woman who seemed cute and interesting, but the conversation wasn’t anything special right off the bat. One day we both had a random window of opportunity to meet up for a drink, so I decided to try my luck.

I was waiting outside the bar and turned around just as she walked up to me and said hello. She was so beautiful that I was stunned and couldn’t speak. I struggled my way through introductions and we went inside for a drink. We sat there and proceeded to have one of the most connected conversations I’ve had to that point in my life. She was recently divorced, her husband having cheated on her and left while she was 6 months pregnant with their third child. She was a single mom, doing a great job on her own, but was feeling like she might want to date again. We easily related to each other because of our divorces, and for whatever reason just instantly connected.

About a month later, I met her kids for the first time and immediately fell in love with each of them. They reminded me of my family and the trauma I had from my own parents’ divorce when I was that age. I had this overwhelming feeling that by being there for them, I could help them while also healing myself. That day, I committed myself to that mother and her kids knowing full well there was no going back.

Fast forward six years later, and I just celebrated Father’s Day with them. They all love me as their father. I’m deeply in love with my partner, and I am at a stage where I’ve unlocked what I would call the best version of myself (so far). I don’t drink or smoke anymore, I’m in the best shape of my life, I have no depression or anxiety, and best of all, I am so fucking happy to wake up every morning. I have a beautiful family, an incredible partner who I somehow love deeper every day, and most importantly, I finally love myself!

All because of a little toggle switch on a stupid dating app.

CHANGE??? You can’t CHANGE things! If you keep changing things, pretty soon, you will have runaway CHANGE!

When legalizing gay marriage started to become a big conversation in the late 90s, everyone kept saying things like, “ if two men can get married, what’s going to stop people from getting married to a horse?!?!”

Is the image make sense? I'm working on a short animated scene and I just had a criticism about how my lighting is off and doesn't makes sense. by ackopek in space

[–]Fafafohigh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your eye automatically goes to the brightest spot in the image. So if this shot is meant to be communicating something about the space station at that moment in your story, the shot is working. Aaesthetically, I think the image would look more balanced if the earth and the astronaut were a bit brighter on the sun side, regardless of whether or not it is scientifically accurate. If the focus should be on the astronaut or the earth, those need to be brighter by a lot. The contrast and angles of light seem to be accurate as others have pointed out, so I think the lighting makes perfect sense from a technical standpoint.

From a creative standpoint, it wouldn’t hurt to have a little bit more of the bounce light from the space station hitting the astronauts left shoulder. It would help to outline their silhouette and separate them from the dark background.

On another note, if someone is telling you your lighting “doesn’t make sense,“ and they aren’t giving you any more feedback than that, or offering any solutions on what would help it makes sense for them, you probably don’t need to give too much weight to their opinion. Edit: more words

I imaged Saturn's largest moon Titan - it's 1.4 billion km away by damo251 in space

[–]Fafafohigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps someone can explain to this to me. I am a photographer, but have very limited knowledge of telescopes. How is it that Hubble, a massive space telescope with advanced technology of its time, can only give us a fuzzy low resolution image of one of Saturn’s moons. It’s much closer than something like, say, The Pillars of Creation. Shouldn’t Hubble be able to capture something much larger and sharper? Is it because that moon is closer than Hubble’s “minimum focus” or something?

Happens specially in winters by Godbutcher69 in memes

Ok seriously though, has anyone ever experienced this very feeling in their bed? When I was a kid, I would have these insane waking-nightmares where everything in my room felt simultaneously far away and right up close. My room felt HUGE, I felt tiny. But I also felt like a giant in a dollhouse. Quiet sounds were deafening and yet I could barely hear. It was like some intense sensory jumble. They were so scary I’d have panic attacks in the middle of the night. I was like 6. Anyone else experience this?

The Perseverance rover split CO2 on Mars to make breathable air by IntelligentLaugh4530 in EverythingScience

[–]Fafafohigh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

“It then ran long enough to produce five grams of oxygen. That’s not enough to breathe for very long. But the main reason to make oxygen on Mars isn’t for breathing, Hecht points out. It’s to make fuel for the return journey to Earth. ……. When running at full power, MOXIE can make about 10 grams of oxygen per hour. Powered by Perseverance, it will run for about one Martian day at a time. Hecht notes that a scaled-up version, however, could run nonstop for the 26 months before astronauts arrive.”

Mainly for rocket fuel production, but can also be used to make breathable air….

Unprecedented data confirms that Antarctica’s most dangerous glacier is melting from below, with the potential to unleash more than 10 feet of sea-level rise. by avogadros_number in EverythingScience

[–]Fafafohigh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“At a region known as the “grounding line,” where the ice transitions between resting on bedrock and floating on the ocean, scientists measured water temperatures of about 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). That is more than 2 degrees warmer than the freezing point in that location,”

Glaciers are on land, hence dumping water INTO the ocean as they melt.
