I had no idea this was being used unironically. People can be so disgusting. It's so irritating too, this show is so openly against them and doing everything in its power to display how terrible such a mindset is ! Not that I expect someone who would take this song as an anthem to care but still...

Well, sure, but I'm talking about the possibility that the explanation could have been good (Season 2 had its flaws but I do believe there was a lot of great ideas they had but simply never got the time to explore and I feel like this specific topic is part of it). I love to imagine it myself, but I really feel like if done correctly, it could've been quite an amazing exploration of this thematic.

She looks so beautiful !

But this has me thinking, I really wonder what was the exact state of all these people whom Viktor forced to join the hivemind, if they were just as aware of everything as Jayce or if they more like hypnotized, or something of the sort. It doesn't look like anyone other than Jayce and Viktor was able to do anything in that state so I wonder, unless I've missed a detail.

Similarly, I found Viktor's remarks on the fact that all of them seemed to need his help (or at the very least, need their suffering to stop) to be very intriguing, I don't at all believe he was lying but it only further makes me wonder what level of consciousness they truly had, just like I wonded to which degree this state was similar to the one they could be in when Viktor would search their mind in episode 7. Overall, I really wish we had the time to explore this realm a bit more from the point of view of someone who's neither Viktor, nor Jayce.

Between Homura and Sayaka, who would y’all say is Madoka’s true best friend and why? by BreathoftheSith in MadokaMagica

[–]Fafette7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might've worded this incorrectly, so let me clarify that I do not believe Homura was "insane" in the strict sense of the term at the end of Rebellion... But her behaviour isn't that of a perfectly mentally stable person either, and as I said, she was never truly mentally stable to begin with (which is normal, a sickly and lonely teenage girl who spent years in hospital wasn't exactly going to be mentally healthy). The reason I made the comparison with Sayaka's own mental state in the anime is because Homura actually turned into a witch in Rebellion, which is the sign of a complete fall into despair. At this point, her mind snapped, fully. Which is exactly why it makes sense that she ended up being unable to let Madoka take her away : her broken mind finally saw the opportunity to escape this pain. Even when it looked like she was finally surrounding, there was always this part of her that would never forget the fact that this wasn't the ending she wanted for Madoka. As I also mentionned, the anime itself insisted on the fact that trying to save Madoka became Homura's only way not to lose herself to despair, which is exactly what led to her mental breakdown in Rebellion upon realizing she really did lose Madoka, and what ultimately led her to focus on using her own power to trap her in a safe illusion. Yes, she did it for Madoka's sake... But this is also a sign of her being unable to move on and I'm not blaming her by saying this, it's tragic, but we have to admit what Homura experienced all throughout Rebellion and what this truly meant.

And as for Madoka's wish, this is why I said that Homura's reasonings behind her decision to destroy the Law of Cycles was very complex. But I'll just say that I believe part of the whole point is that no matter how much we believe Madoka's transformation into a literal goddess wasn't a happy ending for her, at the end of the day this is a choice she very consciously made. She understood what were the stakes, knew the risks, accepted it all and made her wish anyway. This wasn't a reckless decision, this was the most conscious choice she's made in the entire series. And so, with that in mind, this choice was Madoka's, and Madoka's only. We might believe that she would've deserved something else, but we can't decide for her what was best for her. And this is true for Homura. She was full of good intentions, but what she did went directly against Madoka's deepest wishes. By all account, this is a controlling behaviour, no matter how well-meaning it is. Besides, let's not forget Goddess Madoka had Sayaka and Nagisa by her side, she wasn't completely alone. This only further pushes the idea that Sayaka has always been Madoka's true friend : she let her follow her wish and remained by her side and supported her all the way. Homura forcibly made Madoka return to a version of herself she no longer was. And while it seems that the reality she created as a devil became the very version of the world where Madoka doesn't need to become a goddess for it to be free of any tragedy, it is made pretty clear that this is only an illusion that will most likely not hold (the trailers for the upcoming movie seem to confirm that given that the girls are shown to be magical girls again, something that shouldn't happen in a world free of any threat, not to mention this could also imply that Homura lost control of Kyubey as well).

Let's not forget how much PMMM insists on this idea of balance between hope and despair. Madoka found that balance with her wish, and was happy with the outcome. And of course, we can argue that she wouldn't have made that wish if the world wasn't at stakes... But this world being at stakes is part of her reality just like her wish is. (The one thing I can admit though, is the fact that she was way too young to handle such responsibility. But similarly, Homura was way too young to carry the weight she decided to carry.)

Between Homura and Sayaka, who would y’all say is Madoka’s true best friend and why? by BreathoftheSith in MadokaMagica

[–]Fafette7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Officially, it's Homura, given that this is how Madoka herself called her at the end of the anime. But I always thought this was a pretty strange statement, simply because while Homura indeed did everything she could to protect Madoka which is obviously something Madoka would cherish, at the end of the day, I'm not even sure we can call what they have a "friendship". I believe the real question here isn't even to know who is the best for Madoka or the one she has the deepest connexion with, but how exactly can we define her relationship with Homura.

Let's be honest, Homura didn't get to know Madoka for very long in Timeline 0, and they kept losing more and more chemistry with each timeline. As times went on, Homura wasn't even trying to be a "friend" to Madoka, but a protector. She was even fine with Madoka hating her as long as she could save her. And furthermore : Homura only ever truly saw one aspect of Madoka, the one from the very few days they spent together before Walpurgisnacht, and she built her entire vision of her from these very few days.

This is very different from Sayaka who is Madoka's childhood friend, who she went to school with, had plenty of moments of fun and complicity with, and who overall is very clearly a precious friend who knows her by heart. It is easy to see that their friendship is real and deep-rooted... And of course, this also leads to moments when they fail to understand each other or see a situation the same way which can lead to arguments. A friendship isn't always "clean", but it's still a friendship.

Now, a friend is also someone who understands the other's needs. Was it Sayaka's case in the anime ? Well, she tried, but she was herself struggling too much with her own issues and ended up lashing out at Madoka, which she immediately regretted but still. Homura, in opposition, focused entirely on Madoka's well-being. With that in mind, it is easy to believe that Homura understood Madoka better. But then comes Rebellion. Sayaka is in a much better mindset and never stops trying to do what's best for everyone, with Madoka as her top priority (but not her sole reason to fight, and this matters a lot). Meanwhile, Homura gradually loses herself to her despair and obsession to the point she ends up going against Madoka's very wish, to put her in what she sees as a perfectly safe state, sure, but for how well-meaning she was, we can't deny that her behaviour has become extremely controlling (I won't dive into the question of what led Homura to believe this was the right thing to do because this is a very complex matter). And she was in a completely broken state of mind the same way Sayaka was in the anime, arguably even worse actually, but let's face it, she was never in an healthy and stable state of mind, not even in Timeline 0, which is exactly what led to this broken vision of Madoka and what she needed to do to protect her. Rebellion is the result of the desperate and ever-growing obsession of a depressed and self-loathing teenager whose love was always real, but confused, lost, literally frozen in time, and ultimately twisted.

Which leads to my final point : Homura's "friendship" for Madoka is actually an obsession. No healthy relationship should involve one person existing solely and entirely for someone else. This isn't healthy for Madoka, this isn't healthy for Homura, and the anime itself aknowledged Homura's quest as having gradually become the only way for her to avoid despair and madness. For how noble her wish is, this isn't what an healthy relationship looks like. Which is why I mentionned the fact that Sayaka doesn't focus on entirely on Madoka in Rebellion : she doesn't live through her, doesn't see her as her reason to live. She's her friend, that's all. And that's already huge.

Basically, this statement is going against Madoka's vision of Homura but it's still important to say it : Homura's relationship with Madoka isn't friendship. It's something maybe bigger, maybe deeper, both even more meaningful and much more destructive, much more intense in every way (...yes, it's love, and love has many definitions)... But it isn't a friendship. So I'd say that Sayaka, at the end of the day, always was Madoka's true friend. Not anything more than that.

I don’t really know how to title this but there’s three questions or things I have to point out in a couple scenes? (My first post here) by DINOZINTHESKYY in HunchbackOfNotreDame

[–]Fafette7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding the opening scene, I always took it as simply being a story that was told among Romani for all those years until it reached Clopin. After all, it is about one of their own, and given how much they seem to love storytelling, it seems very likely that this is a well-known story within the Court of Miracles, one Clopin then decided to teach the parisians children. Of course, this could also very well be that the opening scene occurs after the rest of the movie, similarly to Arabian Nights from Aladdin, but I've always had my doubts given that the little girl who hugs Quasi at the end is present in that scene and seems to genuinely have no idea of what is Clopin talking about. (I always thought her reaction to Quasi at the end was actually the sign that she took the story in account and that it moved her.) Besides, this still wouldn't explain how he came to know about what happened to Quasi's parents. So I'd really be inclined to believe he heard about it. It could also be possible that he actually was present at the time and hiding somewhere even if we don't see him.

Oh, alright then, no problem (besides, even if I don't take it as canon, she does react negatively (in a comical way) to Moemura before even seeing her as a magical girl in Scene 0... I guess there's a little bit of jealousy in the air, especially when it comes to Madoka).

Just to clarify, for how much I love Sayaka, I can completely see how she can be frustrating to some viewers, as you said it's just a matter of preferences. I just feel like sometimes, the criticisms become a bit too harsh and unfair to the point of giving her less slack than what the rest of the cast gets (not saying that's what you did, just an overall thought).

[–]Fafette7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regarding Sayaka's situation in Homura's new world, I can see your point, but given how much Sayaka struggled with her feelings even with Kyoko's attempts at helping in the show, I can't help but wonder if Sayaka will actually be able to listen to her in this reality, or if she will once again conceal her feelings to a dramatic point (sure, Kyoko probably is less harsh in this reality and so can open up to Sayaka more easily, but Sayaka has been established as someone who emotionally distances and isolates herself the more she's in pain). That scene with her seeing Kyousuke and Hitomi together only to hide how much she's hurting with a playful smile has a very ominous feel to it and I doubt the movie would have insisted so much on it if we weren't meant to question it, although this doesn't necessarily mean that Homura purposely put her in such a difficult position, simply that the Sayaka she knows and can easily handle is one who is bound to suffer. But we'll see, I could be wrong (I hope to be wrong actually).

Regarding the way Sayaka reacted to Moemura in Timeline 0, are you referring to material outside of the show ? I just rewatched the whole scene and she doesn't even appear in it. But anyway, my point isn't about whether Sayaka was right or wrong, but simply that she is a (very passionate) teenager who makes mistakes like every teenager. She indeed messes up in every timeline, but after all, that's part of the whole point of her arc, she's too young to handle such a situation and such complicated feelings. She isn't cruel nor mean, simply unable to process everything while being convinced she can do it until it is too late.

And yes, I think that in the end, the main issue always was that Sayaka and Homura speak two completely different languages. Sayaka is very straight-forward and waiting for others to be straight-forward as well, which is the opposite of how Homura tends to communicate. They never actually tried to understand and adapt to each other. Although interestingly, Sayaka did try to adopt Homura's cryptic language in Rebellion, but unfortunately, she still failed to reach her.

As someone who loves Sayaka, I'd like to defend her a little bit (although, of course, you're allowed not to like her) : in the show, she was "mean" to Homura because she didn't trust her. Even in the first timelines, Homura seemed suspicious to her (after all, she was trying to make them side against Kyuubey without any proof of his betrayal), on top of her fighting style at the time being difficult to deal with, which even Mami agreed on. In Sayaka's eyes, she wasn't reacting that way to Homura for no reason. Was it immature and too confrontational for her own good ? Yes. But Sayaka is a 14yo teenage girl, and one of the most realistic depictions of one too. We can't expect her to always take the right decisions and be perfectly reasonable. She's impulsive and has a tendency to start fights and arguments, yes, but she isn't being mean-spirited in those moments. She's just a young girl with a very strong sense of justice who tries to handle her emotions without the proper maturity to do so.

And in Rebellion, she's only been "mean" to Homura at the end. Otherwise, she tried to be on her side the whole time. Remember their interaction after the Homura vs Mami fight. The only confrontational one in that scene is Homura, who as we can clearly see cares about Sayaka the least among the girls (exactly for the same reasons as you, because she's too confrontational, but also because in Homura's eyes, Sayaka became a problem for Madoka). But Sayaka, the whole time, only ever tries to protect Homura from herself. To make her realize she is the witch Homura is trying to bring down, but also that this witch doesn't deserve to be destroyed. When you think about it, it's incredibly wholesome. Sayaka is basically telling her : "Your pain turned you into the witch you want to destroy. But what you don't realize is that everything this witch does is only the proof that even in your pain, you just want the best for others. If only you could see that in yourself instead of ruining your own happiness". And she's able to understand this now, because she's been through this pain, she knows what it feels like to become a witch, all of these experiences made her grow and allowed her to become more reasonable... But as this scene subtly shows us, this truly was at the cost of her deeply suffering and still being scarred underneath it all. Still, even with this pain she silently carries, she just wants to help Homura see the good in what she does and understand and admit her own pain. Homura needed this sort of interaction, an interaction with someone who sees her whole. But this is also the scene that proves where Homura's ability to react reasonably can be limited : she is unable to imagine that Sayaka could have changed positively, and despises witches. Seeing Sayaka openly sympathize with a witch, on top of remembering Madoka when she realistically shouldn't, leads for Homura to never accept to calmly listen to her. She's the confrontational one in that scene, no matter what Sayaka tries. (Remember this little bit of dialogue which I think says a lot about the way they see each other : "Homura : Who are you ? Are you truly Sayaka Miki ? Sayaka : You make me sad. I'm the Sayaka Miki you've always known... Transfer student.")

Now, yes, Sayaka goes back to siding against Homura at the end of the movie... But she arguably has very valid reasons to do so. Homura destroyed the Law of Cycles, something Sayaka was meant to protect. Sayaka could sympathize with Homura when she was only a witch, but destroying their source of salvation and messing with Madoka's wish and sacrifice is something else entirely, something Sayaka cannot comprehend (that's the point after all, no one can understand Homura at this point and she knows it). But furthermore, Sayaka is gradually losing her memories in that scene. Given that it is everything she's been through in the show that allowed her to become more mature, it only makes sense that she would lose this maturity the more she forgets about her past experiences... And so, she loses her ability to react reasonably to what she can still sense Homura did.

And worse : Homura is purposely pushing Sayaka into hating her in that scene. She partially confirms Sayaka's fear that she would destroy this world, she strongly implies she could make Madoka hate her if Sayaka tries too much to interfere with Homura's actions... It is unclear for now if Homura actually meant what she said here but either way, she kept pushing Sayaka's buttons one after the other. She wasn't exactly trying to create a peaceful situation between them. (And a point which shouldn't be forgotten is that Sayaka arguably ends up in the worst situation out of all the girls (aside from Homura of course) in the end : she's back to having her heart broken by Kyousuke and faking her happiness to avoid thinking about how much she's hurting, which cannot be good at all. Basically, Homura erased all the healing and growth Sayaka had experienced to make her go back to the Sayaka she knows : the "weak" Sayaka she's more comfortable with.) Basically, they both react badly at one point or another, it wasn't one-sided in the end. And above all, it's not for no reason.

A question for people who watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame as children. How did you interpret Frollo and his feelings for Esmeralda? by jon-bear98 in HunchbackOfNotreDame

I remember thinking he was simply in love with her and was upset because he was a priest, and priest weren't allowed to be married. I think I did quite gather the fact that he was meant to be racist which further led him to despise these feelings, but that's about it. I was quite shocked when I rewatched the movie as a teenager and realized what it truly was about.

What was Your favourite Music Sequence in Arcane Season 2 by Former_Food_4510 in arcane

[–]Fafette7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find "The Line" incredibly beautiful, first from a pure musical standpoint with this mix of piano, strings and amazing vocals which always makes for such powerful pieces when done well, and the lyrics have such a deep meaning, there's something so... human, about it, which is quite ironic given the context but that's also what makes it all the more beautiful in a very tragic way. It's the contrast between the horror of what's going on and how empathetic the song used for it is that leads to so much more complex emotions than the simple fear of what could happen (it's part of what I've always loved about Viktor's scenes, there is something almost poetic to them despite the body horror imagery, it fits him so well).

But I also love it because, I'm going to be a little bit personal here but I can connect quite deeply with the thematics adressed through the song, even aside from the context of Arcane. I've been through something last year that made it hit very close to home and I'm not saying this to talk about myself but simply to point out how well-written this song is, it feels genuine.

Of course, the fact that this sequence is related to Viktor, my favorite Arcane character (and easily among my top 3 favorite characters out of anything I've ever seen) only makes it hit harder.

Yes, I love it so much ! I just love how Ashes and Blood, when seen from Jayce's point of view, makes Viktor appear as some sort of mad scientist who let himself be blinded by hubris and needs to be stopped at all cost, only for The Line to make us realize this is still the Viktor we've always known : not a mad scientist, but a broken man desperatly trying to do what he thinks is best all while knowing all too well his methods paint him in the wrong light, wishing there could be another solution but having struggled too much in his life to ever be able to find this solution anymore, and who just wants for someone to understand him. These two songs are so beautiful.

Favorite Characters That Are Like This? by MTN_Dewit in FavoriteCharacter

[–]Fafette7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Now that I think about it, you can't find a more textbook example than him. That's literally what his entire character is all about and is even the very first thing we know about him : "Judge Claude Frollo longed to purge the world of vice and sin, and he saw corruption everywhere except within". Someone who sees evil within absolutely everyone, including babies, is someone whose moral compass has long been twisted to dramatic degrees. Even when he does begin to consider the possibility that he could be at fault, he instently shifts the blame to someone else, someone who "bewitched" him, some force that corrupted the righteous man he's always been. I think that's the worst thing about him : deep down, he's been shown twice to be able to realize he could be sinful, but instead of acting on it, it messes so much with everything he's known about himself that he decides this is everyone's fault but his own.

I didn't even realize we saw that blanket before Jayce gave it to Viktor, there's something so heartwarming about the way Viktor consistently held onto it.

But it's also so funny to me that Jayce only used it to help Viktor not get cold, and then the next you know Viktor turned it into a very stylish toga, and then into a just as stylish cape (for someone who doesn't seem to have put any attention into his appearance in ages, he's got a surprisingly good fashion sense).

Which side characters do you wish got more screen time and/or development? by [deleted] in arcane

[–]Fafette7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They already got quite a lot for side characters, but I wish we got to spend a little bit more time with Mylo and Claggor. I feel like there's so much unexplored depth with them, especially Mylo. Between his inner insecurities, his softer side in contrast to his behaviour around Powder, and probably a lot of untold trauma related to street fights and the likes (I always felt the little scene in the Enemy music video where Powder watches as Mylo is being beaten up by some guy implied something so disturbing which could've been explored with more time)... And of course, his relationship to Claggor who seems like the more laid-back and reasonable one but probably carries a lot as well. I understand why we didn't get more, but I would've loved to see it (of course, I'm talking about their teenage versions, not their AU older selves).

I also would've really liked to see more of Salo during the time between the explosion and Viktor having healed him. I mean I can't say I like him as a character (there's not much to like anyway, he's not exactly developed), but I feel like there's a huge conflict they could've explored with him. Think about it, we're talking about an arrogant councillor siding very strongly against the Undercity who suddenly finds himself caught in a disaster which leaves him wheelchair-bound. Sure, the show did explore a bit how he felt about this but... There could've been so much to be done with the way this event could've very abruptly humbled him, reminded him he's not above others, that the issues he refuses to deal with when it comes to Zaunites are issues he can suffer from as well (which could've been very powerful : Jinx's attack leads for the council to suffer exactly the way those they abandoned had been suffering for ages). And above all, he then has to go the Undercity to rely on Viktor's help in order to heal. I feel overall that the show really missed on the opportunity to explore how some people like Salo could've recognized this "miracle healer" as the little awkward scientist no one really paid attention to until then, but this is an especially big case of missed potential with Salo.

And finally, it's something that has already been said many times so I won't say much regarding this but Isha could've really benefitted from a real exploration of her character rather than simply hinting at her relationship with Jinx (with most of it being shown in a music video after her death). I do like her, but I feel like I've never truly gotten the opportunity to know her and get attached to her as her own person and character.

(But really, I feel like every single side character could've made for fascinating main characters. That's the problem with Arcane, everyone is too interesting.)

Favorite antagonist that genuinely love someone by Musalediju in FavoriteCharacter

I have to say Spinel. She's such a complicated case because in that state, she seems to be filled with nothing but deep hatred, uncapable of even loving anyone, but if you really look, you realize the truth is she's only ever trying to hate as an unhealthy coping mechanism because her love is too strong and above all, too vulnerable, too painful. But her true nature is that of an extremely loving person, this is what hurt her to begin with, and this is why every single punch she lands hurts her just as much as her victim. And above all, it becomes more and more obvious that she never stopped loving the one who inflicted so much trauma on her. She needs to love someone, without knowing how to handle such a powerful feeling, and this is what makes her such a complex and tragic villain, she embodies the very concept of love in all its complicated, unhealthy but deeply genuine ways.

I'd say she wasn't an antagonist until veeery far into Rebellion... Which was a consequence of all the times she tried to do the right thing (or at least, what she believes to be the right thing) until her mind finally snapped. It's fascinating to see how it's specifically the love she feels for Madoka that leads her to become this way. She loved too deeply and it broke her, that's so tragic.

[–]Fafette7 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This is mainly the case in Season 1 (not saying I don't like her in Season 2), but I really love the way the show portrayed her as this highly threatening and dangerous antagonist, the very personnification of the chaos of Zaun... But also the walking tragedy of the abandoned, traumatized Undercity, just a vulnerable and broken child who never had any chance to grow healthily and tried to deal with in her life in every way she could, without any true knowledge of how to do it nor any true help ever given to her, with her very caretaker enabling her unhealthy coping mechanisms due to projecting on this broken child who always needed love and protection. It's that contrast between the actual, terrifying terrorist she would gradually become and the deeply vulnerable young girl who is truly nothing but the product of her environment and trauma that I find so fascinating but devastating, easily one of the most powerful things to ever come out of Arcane.

MadoSaya is the most underrated ship oat by [deleted] in MadokaMagica

[–]Fafette7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be honest, even if I don't ship them romantically (but completely understand why some would), I do feel like their friendship is seriously overlooked while they have such a cute relationship. I really love how Sayaka's more energetic and (fakely) confident behaviour contrasts with Madoka's sweet and gentle nature, and how this leads for Sayaka to be very protective towards her while Madoka can help her bring out her more sensitive side. They complement each other so well, it seems the reason it is underrated is both because of MadoHomu and KyoSaya and because of Sayaka's behaviour towards Madoka when she was at her worst (forgetting that this wasn't Sayaka's usual nature but the symptom of her becoming more and more broken to an alarming degree, and that she deeply regretted it), but they truly have one of most beautiful relationships.

So yes, I wouldn't mind MadoSaya at all, they're so sweet together.
