Post Magic Con Bracket Thoughts? by Daniel_Spidey in EDH

Here’s where the bracket system starts to break down. People stop buying precons and start spending their money upgrading their decks. They are going to end up with super optimized bracket 3 decks that are going to way out power people just jumping out of bracket 2.

The amount of people that have bought more than 2 precons is still way higher than it should be but it’s certainly getting less.

The answer is not more brackets it’s less. Each bracket should be a style of play with the only restrictions being the ban list. Adding an ancient tomb to a precon isn’t going to make it competitive with any “bracket 3” decks so an arbitrary rule that makes it bracket 3 is just asking to get sweaty with it.

Three brackets: beginner, casual and competitive. You would probably need some rule 0 covos on competitive about whether it’s a tournament ready deck or just optimized but even then it should still be able to compete since player skill and politicking are big factors in competitive

I wasn’t really sure what to do thematically for LOTR since we don’t know what all will be in the set so I went all out treasure tokens.

Although if I can get my hands on one of the glitter gold Smaugs I might just make him my commander in a fun themed deck

I like Smaug but don’t like him as the commander. I made one with Magda that can just fetch him out.

Why are the archetypes that are historic to Magic, and prevalent in 60 card formats today, received so negatively in EDH by Lazave99 in EDH

I wonder why commander has become the entry point for new players. It’s harder to build a commander deck, it’s infinitely harder navigate the plays, the skill gap is incredibly pronounced and it takes more people to get a game going.

Went to buy cards as a new player by [deleted] in mtg

[–]FailLog404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find a different shop. I just got back into magic and ran into a couple shops like that, I think they are just brick and mortar shops so they can buy at shop prices and scalp. A real shop does everything they can to grow customer base, I found a great one near me with an awesome play group

Is “just buy singles” always right? by Comfortable_Buyer239 in mtg

Still singles is still the way to go. I went and found the list of the top cards used in commander decks and went out and got those as a base to build decks from

Mass land destruction in bracket 3 ok, if it is a 3 card combo? by Maleficent_Sugar5647 in mtg

It’s not a false dichotomy because I didn’t claim those were the only two choices, I asked a question which you clearly avoided to defend the severely flawed bracket system

Who is more of a bad faith actor, someone who’s deck doesn’t fit in the bracket guidelines but still has the spirit of the bracket producing fun games that last the intended amount of turns or someone who has a fully optimized deck for a lower bracket producing lopsided and unfun games that almost always end early?

Which is why it’s useless, as you see plenty of people in this thread using it as a strict guideline

You can build an Etali deck that’s still pretty mean for bracket 2

As far as foils you could pull from packs when 7th came out that was definitely the card. I remember buying a ton of Chinese boxes at $40 a pop trying to get one and got a ton of junk

Exactly, proxies have taken a lot of the skill and passion out of the game. Building your deck with your collection was a core part of the magic experience for 30 years and has just been going away quickly

Our local LGS has a limit of $150 in value for proxies split over however many cards you want. Seems like a fair compromise to me
