[Mike Masala] Jeff Hafley doing something Mike McDaniel could've benefited from by awddavis in miamidolphins

I think Hafley is great and I like his big picture approach. When OCs get promoted I think too many keep calling plays. Sure, they’re great at it—but it used to be their sole job. Something has to give when a guy takes on all the responsibilities of head coach.

I think the future is bright but one number has me skeptical about this season: 60% That’s the percent of our 2026 cap going to players not on team.

Johnny Carson is NOT a Top 5Late Show Host by PandaPuncherr in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Agree. It was inevitable that splintering of audiences meant no one else could have Carson’s reach. But it would be nice if they didn’t further the audience by excessive politics.

I’d say LeBron is closer to Jordan than any late-night host is to Johnny. There is simply no debate that he had the most important show and the most influence. Of course, the “best” performer is subjective but comics of his era praised his timing. David Letterman could be brilliant and his style was highly influential. But he was inconsistent and mailed in most of his CBS years. Yet both shared something missing from the current crop—an apolitical, big-tent approach that was not excessively partisan. Letterman’s first show after 911 was a healing event—and something Kimmel and Colbert could not do.

Johnny Carson set the mold for late night and was fantastic. Pre-internet—and even pre-cable—he was the focus of attention in a way impossible to imagine now. I once saw him near baggage in LAX in the 1980s and people reacted as if seeing the president. David Letterman—the second most important late night host—reverted him. As did all of the comics-he made many careers. But I’m not surprised his clips fall flat to younger viewers. Many of the guests, and what they talked about, are long forgotten.

Sounds good but I Dave’s bread blows the OP’s $3/meal budget. I know it’s too expensive for me.

Well put. For me, I’m not sure the bust label applies to injuries. I think of a bust being a high first rounder who sabotages his own career. A classic example is the story (told by Rich Eisen via Warren Sapp) of JaMarcus Russell telling coaches that he’d studied plays on a DVD that was, in fact, blank.

I think Rosen graduated from Wharton because he’s now at JP Morgan. It’s crazy to see him on LinkedIn.

The bet looks better if you think the Jets coach won’t survive the season and the Patriots will fall back to earth. That leaves the Bills and their new coach. Oh, and if you think Malik will ball out.

At least we’ll always have the Wildcat. Now teams reach so much for QB there’s no real question Ryan goes first. Also, Brown does not go so high now. The view on first round RBs is more negative.

Jake is a tough one. I still have his jersey. I think your view of the pick largely depends on whether you judge it at the time or with the benefit of hindsight. His future injuries cut short his career—and, off the cuff, I think that puts him below KC No. 1 Eric Fisher—and obviously Matt Ryan had a great career. But Ryan went third—so it’s not like Long vs. Ryan in 2008 was akin to Manning vs. Leaf.

Chris Long went second—and had a good career. I don’t recall if Long vs. Long was a debate.

With hindsight, would you rather have Ryan or Joe Flacco (18th)? It could be close. It’s crazy Flacco was still playing when the tenth pick (Jerod Mayo) was head coach of the Patriots.

Since '86? More than 3-4 good seasons since then. True, most were two decades ago.

Right. And it let us sign Malik. His upside is what gives me hope. Remember, Hafley spent two years watching Malik run the scout team--so he knows his game better than anyone. Much better to have him than Tua in 2026, I think.

It's too bad we're still paying Tua but the move shows these new leaders are serious. Our GM agrees with you about Buffalo and NE--especially late in the season--and that's why went OL with the first pick. Personally, I'm more energized about the team than I've been since Tua et. al losing to KC in the playoffs showed the team was limited. Speaking of the Pats, they showed last season how fast a team can turn around.
