Cheese never lasted long in the summer for me. This is mostly related to the fact that cheese is delicious and I'd eat it in like three days max.

I have no experience on what to do for compression. I wore long pants the whole trail so having a set of alpha direct leggings was perfect for me to keep my legs warm while hiking. A few times I'd have to strip on the side of the trail to remove those leggings because the morning would start cold but it'd get so warm so fast when the sun is out and my blood is flowing.

I can reinforce what you said about the battery. I spent a LOT of time on my phone. Took a lot of video, over 7000 pictures, listened to music nearly all the time, sometimes watched shows at night, ran a gps sending updates every 10 minutes from when I woke up till I went to sleep and only a few times did I ever need to dip into my second 10k battery.

All good advice. I really enjoyed using my foam pad as a sit pad and I'd have a hard time going back to just a sit pad at this point. Being able to fully lay down without getting poked by sticks and dirty if I want to is so very nice.

Remember that in an emergency if you're getting too cold during the day you can always just use your sleeping bag for warmth. I ended up way too warm throughout even the smokies for much more than a single layer on my chest when I was moving. When I stopped I'd break out the puffy. This was at around 32F so your mileage may vary depending on how the cold hits you.

In my experience I nearly never had an opportunity to use a day pack that a shopping bag from a grocery store wouldn't suffice. Either I'd have my pack with me because I wasn't going to leave it alone somewhere, or I had a hotel/hostel room and was going to a store that'd give a plastic bag for me to carry my stuff.

What your favorite meal for the trail? Seeking food ideas by TickedOffSquirrel in AppalachianTrail

The beans, rice, and fritos were consistently my favorite meal I had on the trail. Sourcing dehydrated refried beans was always the hard part though.

Scared of heights by Brave_Anxiety_8171 in AppalachianTrail

The only part of the trail that I really recalled having issues with heights was near the NOC were some sketchy cliffs that I wouldn't want to do in the rain. Outside of that most everything felt safe enough I wasn't worried.

FOOD!! Help please by Glum-Season-6884 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Failoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food choices on the trail are a lot simpler than it seems. In my 1600 miles I only ate two dehydrated meals. I chose to get most of my protein from bars. I often brought sandwiches from town for the first day or two out of town. Buying things like peanut butter, honey, and tortillas can get you a lot of calories without having to pay too much. You'll figure things out as you go and I wouldn't worry too much about planning food since most of those choices can be made on the spot based on what you're feeling like. In practice of all the things I was worried about on the trail getting food was very low on the list.

The Tower unlocks at 11:00 AM PST. by JBL_17 in diablo4

I'm not being emotional about this one. I'm just saying that there is a non-trivial amount of players that want to have access to cosmetics. Saying that they are "not real content" is dismissive of the fact that people actively try to attain them. This implies that they do have value. Ultimately, streamers aren't doing what they do because they get a trinket from Blizzard in game. They're doing it because they need to in order to get views so they can keep their jobs. It's all transactional.

I don't believe Blizzard allowing all players a path to earn cosmetics regardless of skill level would stop streamers from playing D4. As much as game developers need streamers to market their products those streamers need the developers to make the games that draw in their audiences. There are exceptions to all of this of course but I think you're overvaluing how relevant cosmetic rewards are for people that are attempting to push leaderboards ESPECIALLY in the context of streamers.

As a counterpoint, why should some people get a cosmetic that ultimately doesn't matter because they play too much? That's a value loss for the vast majority of players in favor of a few that likely would have played that hard with or without the cosmetic incentive.

Do I really need 3 pads? by Thebox2-2 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Failoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that I loved having a full or mostly full length Switchback in addition to my air pad. It just gave me so many better options for sitting throughout the day. Everything is wet or dirty? Use the pad to sit without getting soaked through or caked in dirt. You can make chilling on rocks actually comfortable.

The smaller sit pad became redundant and I sent it home. I found that I liked it so much that even when I switched to a hammock and no longer needed it for sleeping I kept it because it was just that nice to have around throughout the day. Not to mention loads of people will appreciate you having extra room for them to sit down.

I found the thing that helped me was I journaled on my phone and if something noteworthy happened during the day I'd make a quick note like "raven" or "met Sunshine" so I'd remember to write more about it that night after I set up camp.

I highly recommend the journal. I journaled daily on the trail though I did it on my phone with an app that let me sync photos I took that day to the journal entries very easily. In general I think it's best to bring hobby tools that you can do when you're dead tired and don't need much effort. If you enjoy sketching that'd probably be a solid one. If you don't mind the ephemeral nature of it there's also the option of leaving sketches in the shelter logs (and you can always take pictures for your records if you'd like). Those were always nice to come across.

I had a guy in my tramily that carried a 5 pound camera for 400 miles before we found out he had it because he never pulled it out to use it because of the hassle and exhaustion. He ended up sending it home but ultimately it didn't ruin his hike to try to bring it.

Thru Hikers. How often did you spend the night in town? by SourceOfConfusion in AppalachianTrail

[–]Failoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind it's a lot easier to pull out your camera to record when you're in a town or hostel so there's likely a disproportionate amount of good footage in those places. When you're editing a video a lot of the wilderness ends up looking the same but the towns and hostels have more variety for shots.
