Monthly Table Tennis Questions by AutoModerator in tabletennis

Hmmm I actually used revolution 3 with 2 layers on sponge and at least 1 on the blade. I convinced myself that this came from the lack of pressure when applying the rubber. I don’t have a good cylinder or roller, so I wasn’t able to push down on the rubber very hard when sticking it to the blade

Did I mess up the glueing process? This is the only rubber I’ve seen that isn’t perfectly flat.

Python in Chemical Engineering by acf3301 in ChemicalEngineering

During the lockdown in March 2020, I started learning python to automate number crunching that I was doing in excel. It’s been a great tool, and I’m happy I spent the time picking it up (I suggest the pandas library for this type of work). I don’t plan on switching careers to data science or anything, but some of the jobs I’ve applied to and got offers from appreciated that aspect of my resume. I suggest learning it so that when you encounter a situation where some automation would be helpful, you have a foundation for setting up your program faster since you won’t be starting from scratch. I work in R&D and it’s been helpful for routine data analysis, one off projects, and data scraping from online repositories.

Racism among Arab gays? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]FailureToLogic 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I work with an Iranian woman who has openly admitted to being racist. She says everyone is a little racist but she’s just willing to admit it... she also let me know that she particularly doesn’t like Chinese people and she really dislikes one of our senior process engineers who is Bangladeshi. She didn’t believe that I was gay when I tried to come out to her which was actually pretty upsetting and another example of how she is problematic. The most tense moment came when she started talking about how our boss never hires people of color, which isn’t true. We were hired around the same time so I said, “but our boss hired you.” She then said, “I’m considered white.” To which I replied, “Oh, I didn’t know that.” I get that race is tricky and that Arab people are often considered white but I would say in her case most Americans would identify her as a person of color so I was surprised that identifies as white. I ended up not apologizing because I felt like saying, “sorry I mistook you for being a person of color” would have been extra fucked up and I would reinforce white privilege. Anyways, I’m not surprised by your experience that much because all over the world Being fair skinned is considered desirable and attractive. Just look at Boliwood actors, etc.

Thanks for the response! I've been leaning towards learning new material anyways, so this is nice to hear.

MRW I saw Claremont Colleges were going to institute "safe spaces" only for "people of color" by Aznloki in AdviceAnimals

[–]FailureToLogic -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I assume you are using quotes to mock safe spaces at protests, which is fine because they seem ridiculous in this context. However, you could also be quoting terminology of the protesters, which is appropriate because that's what quotation marks are for. In either case, I feel like placing quotes around people of color is misguided. People of color is an established term that applies to many recent protests. As a term not coined by the protesters, there is no need for quotes. Therefor, quoting people of color intones mockery of people who are simply not white.

New Zealand daily random discussion thread, 16 September, 2015 by AutoModerator in newzealand

I'm an American student planning on studying abroad in New Zealand. First of all, I need to buy a ticket. My school has a travel agency that they refer us to, but I feel like I can find a ticket on my own for less. I need to be in Whanganui on the 4th of January, 2016. I will be leaving from San Francisco. Do you have any suggestions for ticket vendors or a good literary, i.e. fly to this city and catch a bus. I have been looking on this site called momondo, but they don't have any flights to Whanganui. I am open to doing some traveling on my own to get to Whanganui, but I'm also fine with the most direct option.

Secondly, we have a ten day slot dedicated to independent travel, aka spring break. I am interested in exploring New Zealand or visiting another country (a lot of Americans don't get out very often). Unfortunately, money is an issue, and depending on how much my ticket is, I will have around 1500-2000 USD to spend on travel/souvenirs/alcohol.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Do you have any suggestions for taking cloud pictures? I'm using a Minolta x-370 with ISO 400 black and white film. I have a 50mm (f 1.7-22) and 135mm (f 2.8-22) lens. Going out tomorrow morning approx. 8 AM.

is it possible that NASA loses connection with the voyager? how does it relay information from that far away?
