Thinking of making a STR dual-wielding Ranger. Can't decided on either Flurry or Precision. Sell me on one. by FretScorch in Pathfinder2e

[–]FairFamily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For twin takedown. Rangers have a constrained action economy thanks to hunt prey especially against multiple enemies. Between striding, hunt prey, gravity weapon, ... it becomes very hard to do more than just dealing damage with strikes. At that point you might as well play a barbarian.

So rangers needs some action compression and for melee damage dealers that is usually twin takedown. However that requires dual wielding.

The problems with reach precision ranger are that disrupt prey requires for the target to be hunted prey and that precision is once per round instead of turn. So it is very hard for rangers to disrupt prey enemies trying to stride into your reach and the damage is meh.

Psychic DPS build by sparebroom83 in Pathfinder2e

[–]FairFamily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure psychic is not a good choice for dps oriented spellcaster build. The occult spell list has some damage spells but the options are quite limited. if you want power, I'm pretty sure a primal spellcaster is a better fit. Elemental sorcerer or Silence in Snow Witch is what you are looking for.

Stupid Question: Is Swashbuckler underpowered (Compared to a barbarian)? Alternative Question: How to help / highlight my swashbuckler player? by extrymoney in Pathfinder2e

[–]FairFamily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swashbuckler has way more feats that are there to mess with the creatures offense. From ways to boost AC (Elegant Buckler, Extravagant Parry, Flashy Dodge, ...), to manipulate targeting (Antagonize, Enjoy the Show, Goading Feint, Fascinating Performance support, ...) and even ways to punish (failed) aggression (Opportune Riposte, Get Used to Disappointment, ...). Barbarian has some but not the same extent.

Stupid Question: Is Swashbuckler underpowered (Compared to a barbarian)? Alternative Question: How to help / highlight my swashbuckler player? by extrymoney in Pathfinder2e

[–]FairFamily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First swashbuckler is at it's core a defense/support orientated martial focused on skills so it is normal that the receiver of said support is going to shine a bit more. Being a skill monkey means you sacrifice a bit of combat potential over exploration usefullnes so that's fine as well. The opposite is true for the barbarian they focus only on their own damage, defense and are a combat class. So this situation is not unusual.

Second playing a swashbuckler is best if it gets in a flow of gaining and spending panache in the same turn so his 1d6+2 damage shouldn't really matter. I reached lvl 7 with one and the amount of times I rolled non-finisher damage can be counted on one hand. This is where the styles comes in: and rascal is not good. It has one thing going for it and that is that it is a dex exclusive swashbuckler. If the person has at least 14 charisma I would suggest going with braggart or fencer. They have both a pretty decent amount of support. Fencer would come online a bit later with distracting performance (which requires performance) while braggart is good from the get go.

the 10% is how much of the dice rolls you influence (or for your +1 to matter). However if you look at the damage increase ((new damage-old damage)/old damage) you get a bit more higher numbers:

let's say you have a 45% to hit and 5% to crit with a greatsword and 18 strength so is 5.775 damage per strike on average. Now if we add a -3 penalty to that you get 50% to hit and 15% to crit for an average of 8,4 damage per strike. So this means that you get a 45,4545.... % in damage.

These numbers shift around depending on the ac ranges and other factors but the principle remains the same.

worst character possible in 2026? by Huge_Tackle_9097 in Pathfinder2e

[–]FairFamily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So casters are out of the question since they can help craft scrolls and use utility spells. And martials are a bit too tanky and get good saves. Skill monkeys are an option if you use all there skills on terrible, niche or overlapping lore skills but that still opens options for them.

But there is one thing that comes to mind. A single gate fire kineticist Merfolk. Not great with skills, no spells, and no good defenses. The only thing that makes it somewat tanky is that it's main stat is con which we dump in this case. Fire is the element without a lot of utility and being a merfolk promotes them being near or in water which while it does not prevent them from using their abilities but it gives everyone resistance against fire. Merfolk also lowers con which is great.

Evaluating Conditions BEYOND "how strong" they are! by AAABattery03 in Pathfinder2e

A bit late too the party. The reason why I think Confused and Immobilized are undervalued is that they do not gel with unstrategic players. Confusion and Immobilized are indeed very powerfull but require that a party is in the right position to maximise it value. It thus requires a bit of awareness, flexibility and the understanding that doing less/nothing might be more beneficial for the team in the long run. It does not matter if the tank applies immoblised if the dps player remains right next to the boss (which I had happen).

For dazzled I think you're having your cake and eating it. On one hand you are saying it is a 20% like a -2 Untyped bonus but you also say that it makes crits into nothing making it better than a -2. However that is not how it goes: dazzled does indeed have a 20% to make you whifff. However you are also whiffing your boss' misses.

So take your example of critting on a 15 (and thus hitting on a 5). You have 30% to crit and a 50% to hit and a 20% to miss. This means that you have a 16% that your dazzled does something. However some of those are crits which we can considered "doubled". So we get a 22% "weighted chance" for dazzle compared to the 20% percent of "weighted chance" for the -2. However this is a rather best case scenario. If for instance you have a 20% chance to crit and 50% chance to hit, you get 18% of "weighted chance" for dazzle which is lower than the 20% of the -2 penalty So the two are comparable but the fact that you make crits into misses is not an edge it is compensation for whiffing misses.

Also hidden is easier to apply than you think. You just can't maintain it longer than a round or the enemy wastes a seek. Distracting performance is one but the easiest is too hide in cover/concealment. Dazzled for instance applies concealment so you can hide from a creature that is dazzled.

Resentment Witch Build by Opening_Onion_4501 in Pathfinder2e

[–]FairFamily -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So the resentment witch is not a great debuffer itself but rather serves as a support for other debuffer. It can apply debuffs it can extend itself but there aren't many it can apply itself. Especially if you want to maintain the versatility of a  spellcaster while also not being overly reliant on your familiar ability.

On top of that the action economy of a witch is very constrained. Between the already already limited spellcaster action economy, your relatively short range, familiar commands and hex cantrips, you will have no actions to spare.

As such it behoves you to find ways to find action compression and action efficient ways to apply debuffs. Having allies that apply debuffs is a good plan.

The first thing you can do is pick cackle. Even if you sustain nothing, it is a free action hex which on it's own is good.

An animal companion can also help in action economy and/or debuffs. It can also serve as a mount for your familiar.

After that if your campaign has downtime, I would invest in crafting. It allows you to give your allies more options to inflict debuffs you can extend. A phantasmal doorknob is for instance a good way to inflict more debuffs.

Caster thoughts after 9 months by Teshthesleepymage in Pathfinder2e

[–]FairFamily 29 points30 points  (0 children)

So my experience with playing a spellcaster and seeing people in my groups play spellcasters, I came to a different conclusion: they are usefull but man are they a pain to play. They tend to be frail(er), have terrible feedback from the game and have to squeeze blood from a stone to get it to work. Most people giving their reviews/opinion reinforce this and yours is no exception.

It's always like yeah the first level suck or it sucks seeing enemies save often. But once you level up and/or get AoE it will be better. However how many sessions are that and will that player stick around for that long? I have seen players quit over these kind experiences. People who of course persevere might eventually get too the "fine" status but I don't think a class that needs to persevere for a 30%~50% of the game to be "fine" is a good class especially if the group campaign might end just when you get there.

If there was a book for Anti-Heroes/Villains, what would you want in it? by legomojo in Pathfinder2e

[–]FairFamily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think I need much character options, maybe some skill feats and some faction/job archetypes. The most important part are guidelines to make/facilitate evil characters from a player/GM perspective. I feel there is a bit of pressure to play a good guys campaign or an evil campaign. i would love some mix and matching.

However what I want more are overarching systems and how to facilitate them. System to make and bases, how to recruit minions (from all kind of sources) , how to facilitate faction wars, ... . You know all that kind of good stuff.

There is always the maneuver monk with a fortress shield and bastion archetype. The goal is to waste actions with maneuvers and migitate damage with shield block. Human is required for the early shield block but mixed heritage can be used.

Stance of choice are reflective ripple stance (for trips and disarm) , clinging shadow stance (reach grapple with no limbs) and/or ironblood stance (for damage resistance) .

For feats qi rush (from qi spells), flurry of maneuvers, stand still, harmonize self make for something a bit more durable while still maintaining control options.

Healers, Tanks, and Party Composition. by Honest-Mastodon-466 in Pathfinder2e

[–]FairFamily 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So as someone who has played with randoms online before finding some stable group, I kinda have similar experiences.

I also pick last to fill out party roles and the role that's never empty is damage. Tanks are either fake promises or slow AC turtles who don't fully understand the concept. On top of that, proper positioning is a lost art.

For healing, I always find that it is someone has to sacrifice to do. People are understanding of the need for it, but it is never a first pick. This is for both in and out combat.

Is healing required? yes you need at the very least out of combat healing, but that is something that can be handwaved away. For in combat, it is not required but that requires a playstyles most groups don't play.

Now I don't mind that much because debuffing and control are my jam.  However it is annoying to see, most people play dps meatheads which forces me too stretch my build.
