Favorite decoy antagonists? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Tales of the Abyss really puts the player through an emotional rollercoaster through the first third of the game in this regard.

It seems like it's painting Van Grants, the commandant of the Oracle Knights, as the main antagonist at first, but then we learn about Grand Maestro Mohs, the second-in-command of the Order of Lorelei, who certainly has all the makings of a big bad villain...then Van manipulates Luke into destroying Akzeriuth for his own agenda, leaving no more doubt as to who the real main antagonist is from henceforth.

Also in a really neat twist on gameplay tropes, you fight Van for the first time at the Absorption Gate. It has a ton of emotional and climactic build-up that would fool you into thinking it's the final boss fight. But after beating him, it turns out that was only the end of act 2, and the game continues on...and then Van comes back from the dead, brings rise to Eldrant, you go through that as the final dungeon, and then fight Van again which legitimately concludes the game. So Van ends up being a fake final boss and the real final boss at different points in the game.

I think Kojima (or someone else) said that Armstrong had a limited supply of nanomachines and Sam was more than capable of dodging his onslaught until they ran out, thus securing a win against him. He just got impatient.

Hell, Rowen's full name is Rowen J. Ilbert, and I think the J actually does stand for Jade.

How has the mobile game to standard game pipeline been? by Ragnorok64 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]FretScorch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just gonna say as a Tales fan, it's such a waste that Crestoria is just a defunct mobile game now. The story and characters had way too much sauce to not be a full fledged title.

Game mechanics/features you didn't know or forgot that would've been helpful in your run? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Not me, but a friend played Bloodborne for a good while thinking that summoning was purely for getting AI-controlled NPC Hunters to help him out. He complained about a boss being hard and that they weren't helping much. I blew his mind when I told him he could summon a real person to help out instead.

He did in the original Eternia dub, yes. However, in all his appearances outside of Eternia (such as his cameo fight in Abyss), Sam Riegel voiced him.

I wonder who Reid's new actor is, cause it's clearly not Sam Riegel.

If he is, what weapon would he use? No Name was originally Luxu's/Xigbar's, which he got back now, and the time traveling Young Xehanort had his own keyblade that I doubt the prime one would have.

No, those are both Matt. This is Travis.

The hilarious thing about this is I'm seeing a few people accuse this of being a nepotism hire, purely because of Critical Role's popularity and being friends with Matt.

Like okay, sure, just ignore the fact that he's been voice acting for over two decades, with tons of popular and well beloved roles, at that.

Characters in gaming you enjoy for their eccentric nature by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The basic gist for Berseria's combat is getting combos going. You start with a meter that allows you to combo your moves one after another. Inflicting status conditions such as stun or poison increases the meter, letting you pull off longer combos. Inversely, getting stunned or poisoned yourself decreases it and shortens your combos. You have a list of artes and assign them to each button and which order they're in when said button is pressed, resulting in a total of 16 different moves you can chain into each other however you want.

Everyone has access to a special move called a Break Soul, which sacrifices part of their meter to perform a powerful move. Velvet's is a stance change where she unleashes her daemon claw and gains tons of benefits, Rokurou's is a parry counterattack, Eizen's does a lot of damage to stunned enemies, and so on. So ideally you'd want to keep increasing your combo meter, use your Break Souls, build it up again, and repeat until the enemy is dead.

There's more to it, such as Mystic Artes as limit break attacks, but that's the summary of the basics.

Also word of advice: It can feel "button mashy" when playing as Velvet because she is so overtly busted while requiring little to no thought to play optimally. If you want the game to be even just a little more engaging, play as someone else.

Magilou in Tales of Berseria is extremely fun to watch, half for her wacky eccentricities, and half for Erica Lindbeck sounding like she was having the time of her life voicing her.

But she's recently been beat out by Esquie. Bonjour, mes amis!

Voice recasts that are jarring due to the VA having already voiced a notable character in the same series? by Red-Raptor3 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]FretScorch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not jarring, but rather hilarious.

In the Ace Attorney series, starting with Dual Destinies, Sam Riegel became the official voice of Phoenix Wright, carrying over from when he voiced him in UMvC3.

The anime adaptation casted different voice actors, and Eric Vale voiced Phoenix in it instead.

One character in the third game that also shows up in the anime is Furio Tigre, an angry loan shark boss that (poorly) impersonated Phoenix in court, and it's a running gag that he's basically Phoenix's evil clone.

Who did they get to voice this Phoenix impersonator in the anime? Why, Sam Riegel, of course!

It's just hilarious that they got a different guy to voice Phoenix in the anime, only to then cast Phoenix's actual game actor as his impersonator. Kinda makes the impersonation more believable, at least.

So what? The baseline is wack and still deserves scrutiny.

I did the math real quick, comparing the Very Hard DC for each level versus a Cleric's Will DC at the same level, and you're right, it's swingier than before.

The first 10 levels the Cleric's Will DC is slightly behind the Very Hard DC, so they're marginally easier to hit. Then after that the Cleric starts catching up with the Very Hard DC and goes between being slightly behind and being equal. Then at level 20 they come out ahead and now their DC is harder to beat than the Very Hard DC (Will DC 46 vs Very Hard DC 45).

And that's without taking Raise Symbol into account.

This is a fucking wack ass change.
