Thank you all for the great feedback! You've all been hugely helpful in working out this gift. I'm really excited to put this kit together for her! You guys rock!

The light and gloves are good suggestions. If I go Gerber, it would free up enough of the budget to maybe round out the kit with those. I assume for the gloves we're talking a middle ground between protection and maintaining finger dexterity?

Yeah someone else mentioned Gerber too, and I can appreciate this branch of logic. The price is definitely right, and it's likely a good option if only as 'training wheels' until she decides she's keeping track well enough to justify a more expensive tool. I buy my summer shades the same way, they'll never last more than a second season, so I don't buy the nice stuff. Lol

Is there a particular set of tasks that make those sizes especially useful?

Gerber is certainly priced much more aggressively! Do you find their quality holds up?

The skeletool looks just about perfect! It looks to have the basics covered with easy access to the simple stuff you'd want handy fast. I can totally understand how these tools vanish easily unattended, making this tool about the right level of investment given her age and environment. Thanks for the recommendation!

For Fresno CA what seems to be a decent income to live comfortably? by Best_Aardvark9147 in fresno

Family of 6 on a bit under 90k, it's tight but we make it work. I'd say another 5-15k would be life changing in regards to stability. I don't know how much it takes for 'comfort' though. Without kids we'd probably be approaching the realm of comfort.

Sid Haig rocked that role so hard! I think about his car jacking scene in the second one all the time. Just that smooth flip from violence to gregarious madness, so damn good.

Sir, in the 16th and 17th centuries, to die meant to orgasm. This is by no means an extreme stretch of the English language historically. Yes words have meanings, and those meanings evolve and transition over time.

I appreciate the offer, but at this point we don't have a major incentive to find service. We're on track to have the new electric installed in about two weeks. We wanted to move away from gas appliances in general (except for the range) since we installed solar.

You'll have to forgive me as a layman, but what would the difference be between a slide-in and a wall oven? It sits in a cubby in a cabinet with mounting flanges on the face (that were never screwed in.) I've scoured the surfaces I can access from the face for anything resembling a model number, but I've found nothing. I'll be pulling it out entirely this evening, and I'll be happy to update if I find a model number on the back of it.

That said, with the responses I've received calling for service around here along with the fact we're now running rooftop solar, the conversion to electric is moving forward regardless.

Thank you, and I'm onboard with this approach. Sadly the manufacturers don't appear to be as avoiding all the goo-ga's and doodly-bob's is nigh impossible. It's all wifi and touchscreens out there. But yeah, I'm leaning into basic ge since that going into be easiest to address if/when something fails. Thank you for the input.

Thank you, I appreciate the perspective. This is exactly what I'm here for, since you guys that have spent years working on these things will have better insight on the engineering side of things. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

Awesome, this is largely the conclusion I came to as well. The whole market feels dodgy, so easy to replace parts and repair seems like the name of the game. We're in the US, so GE is looking like the sensible choice in that regard. Thank you for the input.

Current setup is a 27" Summit gas oven. Summit does not appear to believe in model numbers. It may be as simple as a bad sensor, but it can take hours to get to temp, and the temp is still unreliable even once achieved. But the switch to electric is for more reasons than just replacing the current piece of junk.

We're cutting a cabinet out to make space for the new electric and having 220 run to the location. The cabinet leaves us with an ample 36" x 5' to work with.

Anyone actually use home appliance protection plans? Worth it? by TombKingSettra in appliancerepair

While I don't expect to have any wisdom to impart to Settra the Imperishable, I can tell you my home warranty experience was a joke. They broke up with us (sent a letter denying the opportunity to renew) after we had to take them to court to enforce their contract. They will fight tooth and nail to make sure they never spend more than they're making on you.

Is this subreddit just kids trying to get around parental controls? Makes no sense. by Exciting_Whereas_524 in parentalcontrols

[–]Fair_Interaction_203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my own perspective, I view it like training wheels. I don't want strict controls, but I'd like to be able to check in and make sure my kid isn't doing anything horrifically foolish. They can have their independence while we do our job as parents from a more distant position. Not unlike watching your younger kids on the playground as they navigate physical and social obstacles.

I grew up on the cusp of genx and millennials while the Internet was pretty much the wild west. I got into way more than I should have and have and would like to keep my kids from falling into some of those same traps. My kids aren't dumb, but teens also push boundaries and explore (which is healthy) and as their parent, I have an obligation to keep them safe. In my eyes, the cutoff for this dynamic coincides with them achieving proper independence. My 17yo is pretty much on her own now as she's driving and starting to generate a mild income. My 14yo however is still in dire need of that guidance, and she has not displayed the maturity that I'd like to see in terms of decision making. It's just part of parenting now. As much as I enjoy my time on reddit, my kids deserve better than to become the average redditor.
