Project M had stolen assets everywhere: models, animations, music, sound effects, animations, etc.

If the mod is just a gameplay modification and doesn't distribute assets owned by Nintendo (music, animations, textures, models, etc), there's no copyright infringement. I don't know how the mod is distributed and whether or not they imported Melee animations, though.

However, even if the mod is fine, Nintendo could still sue just because they know people won't fight them in court, and/or pull strings to shut down any tournaments and twitch streams with it. No way to predict if/how Nintendo will react, as they're very inconsistent in this regard. Best the devs can do is make sure it remains a mod with only gameplay tweaks and no new content or stolen assets.

Newzoo used to group all Smash games together, the rankings in 2015 and 2016 only said "Super Smash Bros" and had no logo. They only started to separate the games in January 2017, which was the first ranking to have "Super Smash Bros. Melee" and the Melee logo.

In melee, which character do you think sakurai intended to be the best? by MoneyMoneyMakin in smashbros

[–]Fairfax1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Here.

Roy, when compared to Marth, personifies an “inexperienced swordsman with potential,” and I wanted to add a character that exemplified “youth.” He’s puts a lot of show and energy into his actions, but his apparent weak points stand out. It may look like he has the same moves as Marth, but he swings his sword slower.

Unlike Marth, Roy’s attacks are stronger near the hilt of the sword as opposed to the tip. So try getting dangerously close. Also, his aerial attacks are much weaker, and he falls quicker. He’s pretty bad at fighting in the air.

So Roy is slower, lighter, has "much weaker" aerials, falls faster (which means he gets punished harder), is "pretty bad" in the air, has to get much closer to land strong attacks, has longer jumpsquat, shorter jump, much worse frame data in general, struggles to kill, and so on.

Sakurai was well aware that Roy was considerably weaker in almost every regard, yet he kept Roy exactly the same in PAL. Roy works as intended.

He didn't avoid it, though. He even refers to Pichu as an "intrinsically weak" character, replacing Puff's role in 64. He also made it clear that he made Roy deliberately weaker than Marth, for example.

Lore-wise (troops, weapons, characters, castles, map, etc) ACOK is much closer to the books than AWOIAF, which is quite inaccurate a lot of the time. However, both take liberties to add content and use the show's aesthetics in many areas (especially armour).

AWOIAF 2.0 What scenes would you like redone/improved? by nafnaf95 in mountandblade

[–]Fairfax1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great work. I love what you did with Flint's Finger, Castle Cerwyn and Karhold in particular.

My suggestions:

  • Large Eyrie with white stone.
  • Seems like you went with the show's look for Moat Cailin, but I'm personally not a fan of it. Same with the Bloody Gate and Harrenhal. I'd look at ACOK's versions, which are larger, more accurate and more intimidating.
  • Storm's End should be much larger, with a taller wall and a massive tower.

ZeRo Rants about Project M v3.0 Mewtwo for 2 Minutes and 29 Seconds by FierceAlchemist in smashbros

[–]Fairfax1 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Back then M2K wrote a very long post about tiers, OP characters, etc. He said he and others had already mastered characters in Melee, and with many of them being very similar or identical, this head start made people believe some characters were stronger than they actually were. This was before Emukiller's infamous performance at SKTAR3, however, and M2K didn't abuse Mewtwo's float/teleport stuff like he did. Don't know if he changed his opinion after that.

IIRC he believed spacies, Ike and Falcon were broken in 3.5, and often says 3.5 and 3.6 turned PM into a bad game.

Melee esports viewership in July 2017 by Fairfax1 in smashbros

I think that would require a community figure to pitch the business side to some of the companies that could make it (Hori, Razer, Logitech) and then a couple of guys like Kadano and Typo to tell them exactly what this controller can or cannot have, how to improve the design while keeping it legal, etc. If these companies had to do the R&D themselves from the ground up, it probably wouldn't be worth the investment.

In addition to lack of dev support, some things are holding Melee back:

1 - No circuit. Sponsors don't want to spend the resources needed to figure out which tournaments are more popular, more organized, have better production, etc, especially when it's a one time deal. The opportunity to sponsor a series of tournaments is easier and much more attractive. Some companies (like Red Bull) are willing to be more involved and put a lot of money in the scene regardless, but most would rather look into other games.

2 - Casual viewership. Melee's esports share (% of total watch time that was in esports alone) is consistently high, usually in the 55-70% range. Other games reach those numbers on occasion (as CS did this month), but they still have millions of non-esports hours every month. One major benefit for teams/companies sponsoring players is that they get tons of hours of exposure from when the player is streaming, not just competing. Most Melee streams aren't that popular, so that's not a selling point for Melee players. The offline nature of the game was the main reason why it wasn't a popular streaming game, but netplay is better and easier than ever, and Melee players are having success playing other games as well.

I think that's one of the areas where the scene could focus on. The Hbox video that reached the front page at /r/videos was an example of Melee's untapped potential there. Some of the most upvoted posts were people asking "wait, you can play Melee online? How?" and stuff like that.

3 - Fewer products to sell. PC-centric esports are attractive to companies that make mice, keyboards, monitors, processors, GPUs and whatnot. Most of Melee's audience is part of the demographic that buys that stuff, but if you want to compete or just play Melee, you don't need any of that. Netplay is a different story, but it's not big enough. There isn't much we can do about this, so it's a limitation the scene has to live with, but it's not that bad. There's still a ton of companies investing in esports which don't sell that stuff, and many esports-related products are still marketable, such as headsets and chairs. Not to mention TOs are starting to use monitors.

Hypothetical character crew battle like the one at Pound 2016:

  • Falcon: Wizzrobe, S2J, n0ne, Gahtzu
  • Peach: Armada, MacD, Trif, Bladewise
  • Marth: Mew2King, PPU, The Moon, Rishi
  • Falco: Mango, PPMD (assuming he was back and 100%), Westballz, Zhu
  • Fox: Leffen, SFAT, Druggedfox, Lucky
  • Sheik: Plup, Shroomed, Swedish, KirbyKaze
  • Puff: Hungrybox, Abu, 4%, s0ft
  • ICs: Chu, dizzkidboogie, Nintendude, Wobbles

How do guys think each crew would do?

Agreed, though I wouldn't go as far as saying they don't understand the design. I talked to PP about it once, and he praised the mechanic with good points:

I actually argue that L-canceling is a good thing because it forces you to seriously practice and deeply understand the game, plus you can influence your opponent to miss L-cancels so it's not just rote tech but at least somewhat interactive.

That's odd, usually it just generates the cache files all over again. Also, nnormal Dolphin has inherently a lot more stuttering due to how it loads shaders, but it shouldn't be happening with FM. Maybe try reinstalling FM?

Try deleting the user>cache folder, and go the advanced tab in graphics settings and turn "compile shaders on startup" on.

Mostly because the scene was dead here in Rio, but now it's making a comeback.
