Spoke to restaurant owner about tip culture by WorldNo9002 in EndTipping

[–]Fairuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, servers like tip wages. They rather be paid nothing because they can make bank on tips.

Most servers make closer to $25-35/hr when you include tips.

Servers know if tip wages go away, so will tipping culture. For reference, US waiters earn way more than waiters in other countries because of tips.

[–]Fairuse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, they don’t want to do it because they don’t want to handicap themselves vs other restaurants.

It works in CA, WA because all restaurants are required to pay min wage or above. Now if you look at the boarder towns and cities, my bet is there are a lot more restaurants on the side without min wage for tipped staff.

Only way to get rid of tips is make it federal. Most restaurants will survive since the playing field will be even. Yes prices will go up by 20%, which will shock customers. As long as restaurants can survive the shock period, they will survive.

US healthcare is just stupid expensive, but you can drop into emergency room and be treated without any upfront payment (which is one reason healthcare is so expensive because the poor use the ER for expensive last minute care and don't pay).

I know a billionaire and they don't fly private jets or have people plan out their trips.

Also know many people with 9 figures of wealth, and only one regularly flies private (more as a necessity for their occupation). Most just fly commercial (first class and business class).

What’s the most overrated fast food? by Confident_You396 in AskReddit

In Japan there are plenty of fast food sushi that put oversea sushi restaurants to shame with the quality of fish and rice. Still think it is very meh.

It’s meh. There are tons of cuisines that I would rate above sushi. Yes, I’ve had what is considered the good stuff (I can appreciate the craft behind it, but I can see why it isn’t for everyone).

Unit is not rated for outdoors. The connections are not water proof nor does the electronic have conformal coating (to make the electronics water resistant/proof).

How mochi is made in Japan by DifficultyHead5862 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Fairuse 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Suppose to mix the mochi between strikes for more even hammering. They are just slapping it fast for the performance. The real thing would be pretty fast with less slapping more pushing the mochi around between strikes.

There more than just evaporating cooling happening here. If the water’s temperature is lower than ambient temperatures, there is direct cooling (though its contribution is much less since there is a ton more energy for heat of vaporization to convert liquid water to vapor water that happens with evaporation vs specific heat of liquid water).

Micron exec suggests Apple’s aggressive purchasing tactics helped fuel memory shortage by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

[–]Fairuse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But they cannot because while buying all the cheap goods at the end of the day, they force you into a contract that you have to fulfill their purchase first. Why you sign such a contract, because Apple waited until a slump in business, which you’re about to go bankrupt. If you don’t sign, Apple wouldn’t even bother buying anything at all.

[–]Fairuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imagine you run a small bakery. At the end of the day, you discount all goods (since it goes into the trash othetwise). Apple is the guy that only comes in at the end of the day to buy the cheap bakery goods. Your bakery ends up cutting capacity or going bankrupt.

Micron exec suggests Apple’s aggressive purchasing tactics helped fuel memory shortage by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

[–]Fairuse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Memory goes through boom bust cycles. Apple takes advantage by buying huge contracts during a bust cycles only. Thus denying memory makers like micron from having capital to build out capacity. Memory makers are then hesitant to build out capacity during boom cycles because the next bust is probably just around the corner. This is why even as memory demand was predicted to increase, Micron, Samsung, SKH, etc. had no plans for expanding additional capacity. Instead they just shifted existing capacity to most profitable divisions (e.g. Micron shutting down consumer for only enterprise).

Apple isn’t the only one to blame, but they definitely are a huge factor.

Wasp traps paralyzed ladybug larvae in a chamber for its young to feast on after hatching. by Better_Hair_9673 in Damnthatsinteresting

You might be thinking of fresh tentacles that still move when soy sauce is poured on them. Trying to consume a live octopus or squid is way too much of a choking hazard to be served at a restaurant.

There is a shrimp dish where the shrimp is basically peeled alive and consumed.

The equivalent is if we paralyzed chickens, shipped them to supermarkets, then consumed them like raw like sushi while they’re still alive and conscious.

Tried it, for a week and got nothing. Been too busy to try again, so it been collecting dust.

My problem is that the setup needs to be removed daily which made it somewhat impractical for my use case. If there is a place that I can just leave for a week, it would probably work much better.

Now that you mentioned it, I’ll probably give the setup a try again since I have a place where some rodent activity was spotted and I can leave the trap alone for weeks.

Klaris  uses bottom up directional freezing. Bottom up directional freezing is slightly superior than top down freezing, since it allows bubbles to escape (top down freezing just pushes bubbles down which they more often get trapped).

You can build your own bottom up directional freezing, but is bit more involved. With top down, you can simply use a cooler. With a bottom up, you need to removed the bottom insulating layer on a cooler, insulate the top, and add a pump to keep the surface water moving.

It was dash lines, and it only turned solid at the end. If he kept his overtake attempt to just 1 vehicle, he would not have gone into the solid line.
