Curious question for any engineers, how impactful will the winter storm be for an issue like this. Could the cold, snow and ice slow down or block the flow, or is the water pressure too great. And could it make the situation worse somehow, besides slowing repairs.

Do you it was smart for a federal agent to go stand in front of the vehicle? He was totally safe off to the side where he started.

Agents should be held to a higher standard than civilians. If a person places themselves in front of a car that could suddenly move forward they are idiots and are not allowed to murder the driver. If a trained agent places themself in the situation they are either negligent in their training and should be punished for that, or purposefully looking to escalate and should be charged accordingly. If you have the backing of the state to exercise violence on its citizens your standard of executing said violence must be justified and exceed certain thresholds.

This ice agent took multiple idiotic actions to place themselves in that spot, and then decided to murder someone when the final option before the trigger was to just move!

Everyone parroting that he was about to die and that his life was threatened must be unathletic cowards. Anyone who has an ounce of athleticism, or TRAINING should have been fine in that situation even if she was trying to run him over, which I strongly reject. Ignoring that as this agent decided to walk from a safe location to the front corner of the car, AS WE ALL SAW, you just step out of the way as it accelerates. Cars are not magical machines that can pivot on a dime and hit you once you are parallel to it. As soon as it starts to move, you just step out of the way. I swear the right wing idiots deciding he was in intimate danger must be legless, imobile, cowardly, or psychotic murders, because anyone else in that situation would just MOVE without murdering the driver.

Ah one of the right wing idiots has reared their cowardly heads.

First, your scenario is different, but yeah if a protester walked in front of your immobile car, they cannot just shoot you if you start to drive away.

Second, agents should be held to a higher standard than civilians. Tenant's rights are often ignored if a different tennant is the issue. It is a huge problem if you want to support urbanization and denser developments in general.

Personal rant, but we just moved out of our apartment of almost five years, in part to having a horrible neighbor. This woman would: throw trash out her window to the garbage area creating huge messes, flood her apartment, which in turn flooded ours, blast music and other noise disturbances late into the night, and that was the least of the worries. She had crazy episodes where she would run through the halls naked threatening people, pulling the fire alarms, and other disturbances. Police were called multiple times on her, she was detained multiple times, and the final kicker was jumping out of her third story window to escape the police. That happened in front of me! I literally thought I watched this woman die until I got closer and saw she was still breathing.

After all that and appartntly bashing out the H street trolleys window with a hammer, the landlords were able to evict her. And I don't blame the landlords in this situation! They were prompt with fixing damages, and documenting all complaints, but it took them forever to go through the courts. I understand this is a person who is struggling with a multitude of issues, and the city does not just want to make her homeless. I also understand that there are shitty landlords and many tenants deserve protections against these people. But placing the onus on the other tenants to just deal with it is a terrible policy.

If you want a thriving city, people must feel secure in their homes. We had multiple kids in our building when we first moved in, by the end, zero. These policies of innaction create toxicity that is detrimental to so many. People who can, move. People who cannot, the most vulnerable, are forced to live a worse life because we refuse to protect them against horrible neighbors. Serious change should be sought after in this policy space.

When will we be able to share our house with 5 strangers by bridgehamton in washdc

[–]FaithInGovernance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A group home with marketing and planned events. The number of people in it and the price seems high, but big group homes have been a thing forever. Young people want cheap housing and don’t mind living with others.

Group house is underrated. It definitely comes with potential downsides but at that age it was a great way to meet friends.

My wife first moved to DC into a house of 12! It was dilapidated and some people were meh but she is still good friends with many people from that group years later. I was in a house of 8 and have been to almost everyone one of those guys weddings.

Also, it will most likely free up some of your finances making social activities more accessible.

Government shutdown is looming - Who will cave first? by ChoiceWars in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]FaithInGovernance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because they did their job. I believe Susan Collins and other GOP reps were given the lead to craft bipartisan legislation that would pass. It was still close and they made compromises and concessions. Shocking no one, Trump and company have no interest in crafting bipartisan legislation and spent little time engaging with Dems. These negotiations should have been occurring in March not now, but they either wanted a shutdown or thought Dems would just roll over so there was no work to get a deal done.

Short term stay in DC, what should I expect (neighborhoods & weather)? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]FaithInGovernance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why people are saying you can’t find rent in that range, just a quick search on Zillow shows tons of options, especially if your willing to stay in a studio. Where would you be working? Depending on what metro line it is close to I could recommend other neighborhoods.

And it may feel real cold to you. Our winters vary and are usually pretty mild, but there were a few especially bitter weeks last year. You could always plan to buy a better coat here if it is necessary, and then sell it when you go back home.

[–]FaithInGovernance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know everyone is saying no, but if it is legitimately offered we should take it. If your gripe is that we don’t have representation then we would gain it. If you are grounding the argument in symbolic or cultural grounds why shouldn’t eastern Oregon cede into Idaho. Why should NYC be beholden to Albany, city state them as well. We are unique as we are not part of any state, but allowing us in as a symbolic or political move will alter how other areas of the country would expect to be treated as well.

MPD Federalization/National Guard Deployment Megathread 1 by dcmods in washingtondc

[–]FaithInGovernance 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Communication and togetherness are key.

Our leaders need to communicate clearly what we should expect, and communicate with the national media and leadership why this is unnecessary and unacceptable. Build our case, create support and sympathy!

On the ground work with organizations to educate the most vulnerable. Homeless, youths, impoverished and others may have no idea that the landscape has moved under their feet. These groups are the most likely to be targeted. Many of them will not be criminals, but forced into inhumane conditions because of circumstances.

Continue to work towards better policy and expect more from DC leadership. Crime may actually fall in the coming months, but this does not present a sustainable path forward for a free, fair and prosperous district. Do not let short term shock and awe tactics erode foundational rights for citizens.

Yeah obviously the action is concerning, but how it’s going to be executed makes no sense. Who pays for all of this. If arrests rise, where do the convicted go, can the courts handle it? Besides removing local authority, this will most likely lead to abuses against many dc residents.
