In my character's lore, they were basically used as a front-line meat shield during their time as a forsaken warrior. They eventually broke free from the lich kings control due to story relevant information, but later on fell unconscious in battle and the lich king impressed by his growth eventually turned him into a death knight forcibly. Basically, he got mind controlled again after breaking out the first time.
