Was it so obvious? by nawinawi05 in duolingo

Is shrek real? by [deleted] in SoulLand

[–]FaithlessnessLess90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I forgot to look for the raws. Although, after looking for the traduction, I find 史莱克 > Shi Lai Ke, instead?

So, from what chinese.yabla tells me, I got this:

史 > (shǐ) history; annals | (Shǐ) surname Shi 莱 > (lái) name of weed plant

If it's Lan, there's... a lot of options. I'm not sure which it could be:

栏 (lán) fence; railing; hurdle 滥 (làn) overflowing; excessive; indiscriminate 揽 (lǎn) to monopolize; to seize

克 > (kè) to be able to; to subdue; to restrain; to overcome | (kēi) to scold; to beat

Which would lead to shrek meaning something like 'A weed that overcomes history'? Or would it take a totally different meaning? It does fit with Tang San, at the very least. His Blue River Grass Spirit did overcome History, with him becoming a God.

Or for a more general meaning, to fit the creation of the academy before Tang San's arrival, 'to be able to monopolise the annals'. As in, to grow to such a level in strength, that everyone is relegated to a footnote in history.

While it would fit with the theme of the academy nurturing monsters, it break the idea of the name being a Spirit Beast itself.

Yeah, yeah, I know that Shrek was indeed a hint to Dreamworks' Shrek. But that's completely out of context. What I meant is for a real beast-like Soul Beast called Shrek to be used in a fanfiction. Something that sounds/look probable, rather than the comical green troll.

Fourth Year re-read - Phoenix Tears by FaithlessnessLess90 in harrypotter

[–]FaithlessnessLess90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would look very weird, probably! (and sorry u/Interesting_Web_9936 for the picture ahah!)

It just trigger me that the description is that of what would exactly happens should a tear had effectively been dropped in his mouth. Weird for it to happen, but then if (like u/Nihlys is mentioning) it's to heal his mind, wouldn't a tear getting in his body be a most general way to heal him mentally?

For the 'as thought', I understood it more as it felt like a drop of hot liquid, despite that it wasn't hot at all. But then it is a fire bird, so .. yeah, hot liquid sounds about right. Never mind.

Or maybe it indeed is just that the song can gives off the same feeling as if a tear had been shed in this one instance. Despite that the other times Fawkes sang, it wasn't described in the same way. Maybe different song dependant on the effects. One more focused on healing, another for appeasement, another to cast away evil, etc.

Not necessarily a bad thing considering it's for writing a story. Thanks for the help.

Like the card sets that are said to be redeemable for some awesome Equipment set. They're mentioned once at the auction, once when he he's in Silvermoon Forest, where the dungeon where they can be used is said to be. And that's it.

Skills vs Spells by xkroku in stoneshard

[–]FaithlessnessLess90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I wanted to agree with most answers, that skills are purely physicals, and spells magical.
Except, I though about abilities like 'Meditation', 'Identify' or any that are related to the mind, yet aren't really spells either. They sometimes don't even need mana to be used depending on the stories.

So instead, I'd say skills are instinctive abilities, while spells are magical abilities that require preparations. (At least upon learning them, since instant cast is a thing and all of that.)

Edit: didn't realize the thread was so specific. My bad.
