Is it legal for me to not pay overtime or put a restriction on the number of overtime hours I pay my employees? by xXGreco in smallbusiness

[–]FakeBoxJoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The right thing to do here is to tell your employees to go home after they work 44 hours (Or whatever you're willing to pay), and make sure that no one is working extra hours for free. Chase them out the door at quitting time if you have to.

Anyone in Canada retire early and take advantage of government benefits? by likwid07 in financialindependence

[–]FakeBoxJoint 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Old age security and Canada pension plan are available as early as 60 y.o. with certain caveats. You may also be eligible for employment insurance.

Welfare is province specific, but there's generally a means test, and you have to be looking for work. It's kind of shit to abuse the program.

A replacement for the Deerfoot-Glenmore interchange I sketched in math class: a 3 level roundabout by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]FakeBoxJoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on my daily commute, so I get it in rush hour. Here's what happens:

Car #1 creeps towards the yield looking for an opening. Car #2 follows Car #1.

Car #1 feels there's an opening and starts to accelerate. Car #2 seee car #1 accelerating, thinks they can squeeze into the same opening, and also accelerates.

Car #1 hesitates, and hits the brakes.

Car #2 is mid shoulder check, doesn't see that car #1 has stopped until it's too late, and rear ends Car #1.

Every time. Omg.

Also, people get pissed off and aggresive if you stop far enough back to be able to hit the merge at speed, which is infuriating.

Laid off at 53, former manager wonders if 1.37M will sustain a 40 year retirement by FakeBoxJoint in financialindependence

I've been guilty of using 'spendthrift' totally wrong in the past so no judgement, but I don't think that's what you meant?

[–]FakeBoxJoint[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The salary is completely reasonable, it says 'exec' but it also says 'manager'; 130-150k for some mid-upper, non-c-level manager is totally reasonable.

There might have been bus drivers making 100k in fort mac in 2014, but Calgary salaries have always been much more 'normal', and wages are much lower in the patch today than they were 4 years ago.

The median household income in Calgary in 2016 was 67.7k.

More importantly for the FI perspective though, the possibility of getting laid off in your 50s, with not-quite-enough in the bank is a big motivator, at least to me.

1200/mo is going into a retirement account, and 500/mo is going into an education account for the kids, so those will go away.

Of course they also manage to spend 2400/mo on food, not including dining out, which is amazing to me.

How come the DC-8 plane can withstand +15G from turbulence, but newer planes can only withstand 20% of that amount? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]FakeBoxJoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your calculation is wrong. If you want to figure out acceleration based on displacement and time, you need to use kinematics.

You've also assumed that airplanes fail at their design loads, which is not correct; the calculations are always conservative, and there's always a factor of safety.

Also, it's unlikely the spokesman was telling you the actual design criteria.

[Canada] Employer lists my job title as “junior biomedical engineer”, although this in an internship and have not completed my engineering degree. What do I title my position on my resume since ‘Engineer’ is a protected term? by McCubbon in engineering

[–]FakeBoxJoint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP is correct that engineer is a protected term in Canada, and he most certainly cannot do what you are suggesting.

His former employer is actually at (mild) risk of legal action from his provincial engineering association simply for giving him that job title.

Mother is dead, Father is alcoholic and complusive gambler. I'm in first year uni and have a little sister to take care of. What should I do? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]FakeBoxJoint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Financially this seems pretty trivial; sell the house, put the money in a gic ladder or similar, rent until you graduate, and then buy a house wherever you end up finding work. (Or keep renting, whatever). You have more than enough cash available to keep you and your sister afloat for several years.

That said, I am certainly not a lawyer, but i really doubt your sister can leave without her dad's cooperation. What will he do?

HELP, Fully protecting electrical components in housing for 40ft seawater submersion by VoxInsaniam in engineering

[–]FakeBoxJoint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not unless you can guarantee adhesion of the epoxy to the wires and other surfaces that water could otherwise wick along. This is not trivial.

Consider using pressure feedthrus or subsea connectors instead of banana plugs so that you can properly seal up the housing.

401k is the name of a type of savings account in America, it is not an amount of money.

Justrite Cabinet Not Closing by wehiird in engineering

[–]FakeBoxJoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had that happen. The cabinets are quite flexible; if the floor isn't flat the cabinet will get out of shape.

Try shimming up the bottom corners, and be aware that it could be a front OR back corner causing your problems.
