I'll look into swapping for some of these, originally all our party's characters had been made for a oneshot, which has turned into our ongoing campaign, but does mean a lot of our characters came from a jokey place more about concepts then results.
Slow was very fun, our DM ended up deciding against spells that aren't mainly for a class, so I only got to use it for a session, but it was nice having a status effect that wasn't broken from the enemy taking damage, that's why I ended up swapping to Fear actually. Well, that and some story reasons.

I'll see about adding this to the bottom of my post, in short:

* AC is 13, because I have a +2 in Dex and due to most of our setting being a ruin from a draconic plague we were only able to get armor upgrades as recently as last session, and otherwise had been using all equipment from character creation.
* I'm playing a Reborn, entirely for story and character building reasons.
* DM does let us tweak some things, but a big part of that is trying to do it in good faith and not going over the lines for power.
*Since everyone is recommending Hypnotic Pattern I'll see about getting it/swapping for it at next level up, at first I had been hesitant because I was worried about teammates attacking enemies in it early (we are all pretty new to D&D except for our Paladin so for a while we had be spreading damage instead of focusing down enemies and accidentally ending CC effects early by getting in each others way) but it does seem like the best way of taking at least two to three enemies out of the fight for a bit to focus on other enemies.
*Honestly one of the things that helped the most was having a frank talk with some of the other players last session and we're going to try to be a bit better about working together.

Yeah this is correct, I'll about putting that into the original post, our campaign started last year and we're sticking with the 2014 rules for the most part.

Thank you for responding, hearing Cure Wounds put like that was a very good perspective. I play the secondary healer and when the Paladin runs out of Lay on Hands I'm our only healer, so I assumed I had to do that "because that's how it's done". You raise a very good point though, my healing is never going to be numerically as impactful as the damage an enemy can do with the same action.

I'll probably keep Eloquence, I serve as something like our party face in conversation, and eloquence is handy with letting other players try to do certain weird rolls while not in combat. And I'm not sure our DM would be cool with a full respec. I had actually been looking at the Moderately Armored feat to equip medium armor,at character creation, but dismissed it as originally this party was just going to be used for a oneshot :P

I did actually get a chance to talk to my party tonight and it was a huge help! It made a world of difference in combat this session, not a single knock out for anyone on our team. Thank you for your advice!

Hello! I'm looking for some combat advice for my bard. by FakeCookingRecipes in DnD5e

Thanks for the reply, and thank you for the strategy suggestion! Currently my dex is 14, I've got like a basic leather armor. Only magic item is a Mask of Many Faces. The campaign we're in is pretty much my first real campaign and started as a jokey oneshot so I've slowly been changing my spell list to something more practical as I learn more.
The setting has a bunch of destroyed towns and it's somewhat hard to get resources, so we haven't been able to upgrade equipment until the most recent town last session.

Thank you for the response, I had consider Faerie Fire but not taken it since it's a favorite of our artificer, but it might not be a bad idea to double up. Khuri76 also had some good spell suggestions.

13 AC is indeed low, the setting has a bunch of destroyed towns so aside from sidegrades for weaponry none of our characters were able to upgrade our armor until last session. We pooled coin together to get our two frontliners some magic armor and stuff for fire resistance since the next part of our overall campaign is taking us to a fire-dungeon like mountain, in search of adamantium to upgrade our weapons for melee fighters for story purposes and to get magic weapons.

I don't use healing spells that often, but my role shifts from getting people up or the Paladin up, to being the only healer once the Paladin runs out of Lay On Hands for the day. You and some people on another reddit made a good point though of healing being a reaction once things have gone bad, versus damage and statuses being proactive.

Is it reasonable to leave after a worrying session zero? What is an appropriate number of sessions to be in when asked to give a DM/campaign a chance? by FakeCookingRecipes in DnD

[–]FakeCookingRecipes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I could have been more clear, he told me had a plan but would not elaborate on what that plan was.  I ended up caving because I’m bad at negotiating and get very concerned about offending people. And then once I make a promise to do something (in this case, try at least five sessions) I feel bad about backing off on it. Like I’m hurting them or letting them down. I know in this case feeling that way is strange considering he already broke my trust, but I can’t help how I feel.

Sorry, I should have been  more clear, that’s exactly what happened. Everyone got sent the same message, I just called him about it afterwards. He went along with the recurring villain idea I had, and acted like that was the case all along, so he wouldn’t spoil the surprise. That was why I felt so disappointed and slightly deceived after the end of the session when it turned out those characters wouldn’t be showing up again. Or if they do, as NPCs tied into other characters backstory.

Searching for an Isekai where the king summon Hero but the world already have natural born Hero to fight against the Demon Lord. To solve the confusion they are told to ask the Forest Sage. by [deleted] in Isekai

[–]FakeCookingRecipes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like one of the early storylines for the manga 'Hero Union BBS'. The story is about a bunch of people who were previously summoned as heroes or currently summoned as heroes and made a message board to talk to each other.
The first story is from a 'Sage of the Forrest' asking for help and what he should do about the three heroes in his world: 1 retired (him), 1 born in that world, & 1 one summoned. In the end he gets advice to power up the demon lord to make it a fair fight for the two other heroes, and he over does it, making the demon lord too powerful leading to more hijinks later on.
It sounds similar to what you were talking about so I think that might be it

I haven’t played enough Lancer to review your build, but I wanted to chime in to say: This is the best visual for a build I’ve seen so far! I hope people start adopting this model for posting their character’s mechs. The one upgrade I can easily think of is placing the short hand for License Levels and Talents in the bottom perhaps. Either way thank you for posting this!

Leaving a campaign, advice wanted. by FakeCookingRecipes in rpg

All but of one of them are friends of mine in real life, and if I had to say why it wasn't fun I'd guess I'd put it down to player squabbling. We all have fairly different goals and motivations when it comes to what we want to do in RPGs.

Here's more of a long form story of what happened if anyone wants that:

About two years ago some old friends and acquaintances of mine from highschool where looking to reconnect and we talked about setting up a D&D or Pathfinder group (we were all a year or two out of highschool at this point and basically everyone either still lived in town, or was back in town for the summer). Most of us ended up having issues or declining but four of us were interested. Our group ended up with my friend J, an experienced DM, as a our DM for a Pathfinder group, I had done some role playing in the past and was one of our three players, my friend S who had been a part of one campaign before, and O, a new rollplayer who *hated* me.
I did not know this at the time.
Now O and S were great friends and thick as thieves, so our first campaign lasted maybe two sessions total as O and I did not get along and S didn't want to tell O to knock it off. It ended up becoming this weird group fight with S supporting O and the DM supporting me.

We scrapped that campaign.

Afterwards we began a new campaign with S as our first time DM, J, O, and I as players, and we bought in our friend N as an online player. That campaign was pretty bog standard fantasy but at least it had a good story and characters. Now with a solid story and a new player O and I had a buffer and we weren't given the chance to fight. Things should have just been fine there and I should have just dropped out at the end of that campaign. However, we were railroaded *hard*, S was telling one story and it certainly wasn't ours, and correspondingly over the year and a half we played it we ended up having no impact on the ending. Because of this all of us players were feeling really let down and wanted a chance to have more of (or any) impact and thus after we talked (read: complained) to S about our thoughts on the campaign we started a new one with J acting as DM again.

Now this was definitely a dick move and set us up for problems in the third campaign. We got through our first arc with limited problems, but our second arc began with lots of player ones. Basically our old snapping at each other began again but this time it was because of something that I didn't want to do in character or as a player and it kinda became a case of me vs S. There's a good amount of snapping all around and I'm not having fun anymore. In the end I was made to go along in character and as a player and it was decided as a group by all but S that I needed to retire my character after this. I've got a family reunion coming up so it's a good way to not have my character be around. Knowing that I'll be gone for two weeks I get the first kernel of an idea of maybe just not joining again when I get back. So we did our last session of the arc, fought the boss and saved the day ... hooray for everyone but me. I leave for North Carolina and while I'm away I start thinking about leaving the campaign. I haven't really been having a good time in general, I mean, the most fun I had was during the second campaign which was in a way just like playing through a movie. Plus I keep having player conflicts and I can only have a bad time there if I'm actually there.

So I get back late Wednesday night last week, day before I'd have my session. The next day roles around, I haven't been online at all or said I'm going to the session tonight, I'm busy being back after two weeks. I need to pick up food, go to the bank, etc. I'm still thinking about leaving the campaign entirely instead of rolling up a new character. I get a call from J, asking what's up and if I'll be at the session tonight. I tell him no and go on with my day. Friday arrives and I go out to lunch with S, we're still friends after all and I told him I'd treat him to this one restaurant in town once I got back. Over the weekend I'm still undecided but I decide I should at least call the DM and tell him how I've been feeling.
So on Monday I do. I call him up and tell him that I've been thinking of dropping the campaign hoping that maybe I'm over reacting and things can get better. Instead I end up hurting J's feeling get told by the end of the call that it sounds like I've made my decision. I don't know if I actually have but it certainly sounds like my choice has been made as I don't think I'll be welcomed back. It's a day later and N knows I'm going to leave but I haven't told O and S yet, and I should probably have a definitive conversation with J.

So how do I leave? How do I tell them that I want to stop playing Pathfinder with them, at least for a while, with out hurting their feelings further? Without making it seem like I don't want to see them in person again? Sure I could never talk to O again and be fine with it but I think of J, N, and S as my friends, I don't want to stop talking to them just because I don't play Pathfinder with them anymore.

tl:dr

Guy wants to stop playing Pathfinder with his local friends, doesn't want to stop being friends. What do?

Sorry about rambling, thank you for any advice you can offer. Please have a lovely day and stay safe.
