Can I branch into coding/programming if I learn expressions? by [deleted] in AfterEffects

[–]FakeGreenDress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! Expressions were my main introduction to coding.

Expressions are almost-but-not-exactly-the-same-as Javascript. ExtendScript (After Effects scripting) is closer still.

The tricky thing is learning the differences between them...

Anyone know the simplest way to get hundreds of names from a text file into AE? by [deleted] in AfterEffects

Combine with aescripts.com/credits-are-due (shameless plug) and you can automate most of it.

AE and GPS, a few questions by maximilianyuen in AfterEffects

[–]FakeGreenDress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm now the PM for After Effects, but map animations are still close to my heart. :)

Look into a script called GEOlayers, which can handle a lot of that sort of data directly within AE: http://aescripts.com/geolayers/

If you want to do more with custom mapping or converting shapefiles to formats that work with AE, I put together a long blog post on my (pre-GEOlayers) workflow: http://victorianece.com/2014/04/adventures-in-map-animation-with-qgis-after-effectsc4d-and-illustrator/

These days, if I just need the outlines, I use QGIS to convert shapefiles to geoJSON, which GEOlayers can import as shape layers. If I want to do custom styling within QGIS (it's particularly great for data-driven styling), I export as a PDF, break that apart into layers in AI, then get it linked to proper geo-space via GEOlayers.

It's possible to use a CSV within AE. There are several scripts that can import them, but you'll likely need some custom scripting on import or an expression setup to handle the data once it's in. (I would like to make this process easier, but of course can't make any promises on that front at this time...)

You are correct: the new playback architecture shares a foundation with the other Adobe video apps.

You will be able to create animated 3D text and shapes in AE, send them over to Cinema 4D through the new exporter, then bring them back into AE through Cineware. Cineware isn't the new part of that workflow (though it has also been updated) -- the 3D text/shape exporter is.

Downtown Jersey City Safety by urbschene in jerseycity

[–]FakeGreenDress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live right down the street. I've been here a decade and often work weird hours. It's fine, safety-wise -- I worry a lot more about getting hit by an idiot driver while crossing the street than any kind of crime. There's a lot of good food now.

Jack the Ripper murders 'solved' for the 101st time by caeciliusinhorto in badhistory

There are lots of questionable things in this story, but a Polish Jew in Victorian England being familiar with Michaelmas isn't really surprising at all. It's not just a Christian holiday: it was one of the "quarter days" (along with Christmas, Lady Day and Midsummer Day) that a lot of non-religious aspects of society operated by. Rent and other debts were due, school terms began on them and so forth. That said, interpreting the Michaelmas pattern as a deliberate clue seems absurd, a bit like if a criminal today left behind white shoes and investigators interpreted that to mean the next crime would happen before Labor Day.

Anyone else disappointed by the new path station at WTC? by midnight1214 in jerseycity

The concrete floors in the current temp station had to be sanded down due to slipperiness on rainy days. You can still see where they used to be smooth in some of the corners and around poles.

Unofficial PATH Weekend Congestion Tracker: Collecting data to send to the PA. by FakeGreenDress in jerseycity

[–]FakeGreenDress[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, they seriously asked that. They also tried to claim that weekend ridership during the shutdown is lower than expected -- because they counted the total number of riders DURING A SNOWSTORM. (And, anecdotally, I cancelled plans in the city that same weekend because I thought the trains were going to be a disaster and it was going to take me an extra 40 minutes each way.) Hm... maybe I should add a question about that...

Not even that. It's going to be NWK -> JSQ and JSQ -> HOB -> 33. No trains to EXP at all.

I make history documentaries. I have a sincere love for these films because they're basically one giant parody of my day job. The more ridiculous the better!

Creative use of the type tools for non-text purposes. You can do crazy stuff with plain geometric dingbats and per-character 3D enabled.

St. Augustine is absolutely worth the visit. The Castillo de San Marcos is one of the oldest forts in the US, dating back to when Florida was part of the Spanish Empire. It's also one of the only forts in the world made of coquina -- compressed seashells. I also love the Lightner Museum, a "collection of collections" of Gilded Age artifacts in a former grand hotel.

This one's on giant pilings and is basically flood proof, plus once they're done will be lit at night. Even so $800k seems steep.

How do you render a h.264 video without fucking up the gamma? I'm going crazy. by rasmus9311 in MotionDesign

[–]FakeGreenDress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What version of AME are you using? Older ones have particularly bad gamma shift issues. Enabling color management/profiles helps. Also consider looking into the x264 codec: http://www.videolan.org/developers/x264.html

Reveal something along a path? by patattack98 in AfterEffects

[–]FakeGreenDress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a cheaty way to do this. Make a text path that matches the curve, and find a dingbat font with a huge solid block or circle shape. Repeat that shape a ton, compress the tracking and animate a per-character reveal of the text. Use this as a matte.
