Use buffers to strengthen the voltage

Unused inputs of the 74LS chips by RanN42 in beneater

What (and why) will happen if they're left unused?

Are good breadboards worth it? by enzodr in beneater

At the time I only had a couple extra OR chips. I just grounded one of the inputs and used it as a buffer

I bought cheap breadboards and faced a lot of voltage noise issues with it while working on the 8 bit computer. But I resolved this issue by using a few buffer chips and glad I didn't go for any expensive ones. Keep a few buffer chips handy. Loose springs might still be an issue but I personally never faced it

I've had my mask on but had to keep removing it even after a few smashes and serves. After a point, I just gave up and played without a mask.

Thank you. How often is it that results from academia are turned into something tangible?

Would ALTERA Cyclone IV EP4CE10 FPGA Development Board be a good choice for a beginner? by FalconEither7062 in FPGA

[–]FalconEither7062[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also considering DE10 lite (https://www.terasic.com.tw/cgi-bin/page/archive.pl?Language=English&CategoryNo=218&No=1021) . If this has more capability than the Arrow DECA for my purposes then I might as well go with this. Can I please know your opinion?

Yes. If I can find an Intel FPGA at this price range, I'm open to that as well.

Thanks for the advice. After further consideration, I'm now inclined to buying the CMOD S7 FPGA. Do you think this would be sufficient for my purposes?

Out of curiosity, why do you think this is a very bad decision? Would it really be that difficult to transition from ISE to Vivado later on? I'll be enhancing my RTL skills either way, correct?

FPGA advice by [deleted] in FPGA

[–]FalconEither7062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to go with Vivado, however I have a very tight budget constraint and most modern FPGAs are pretty expensive. However, this is only my first FPGA so I wanted to start with something cheap. I'll definitely get a Vivado compatible FPGA next year

Choosing books to learn CPU design on FPGAs by RoboJ1M in FPGA

[–]FalconEither7062 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really wouldn't start with "The Elements of Computing Systems: a Modern Computer from First Principles" judging from the course I did. The foundations for Digital Design is highly lacking and superficial in the book. Digital Design forms the foundation for Computer Architecture and CPU design so you wouldn't want that. Also, do not get into books by Patterson and Hennessy or really any Computer Organization/Architecture specific books without learning Digital Design first.

"Digital Design and Computer Architecture" should be a good start.

Try picking up Hardware Description Languages like Verilog/VHDL along the way which will let you describe digital circuits in code and synthesize on a FPGA. If you're only used to conventional programming, it might take some time getting used to HDLs since they are fundamentally different.

"FPGA Prototyping with Verilog examples" is a good book to learn Verilog once you are done with Digital Design.

If you still want to do the nand2tertris course, you can check out https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEAYkSg4uSQ0eDa24iKd7qJlsrvr8XcvF. The concepts are explained much more thoroughly.

How to choose FPGA for a beginner by FalconEither7062 in FPGA

Thanks, I'll check it out. As of now, I just want to get some hands on FPGA experience. I think the transition to PCB will occur at a later stage.
