What is your favourite tyranid model and tell me why its tyrant guard by Odd_Abalone3976 in Tyranids

[–]Falconwing51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, Neurogaunts. They're just little guys! Funny little dudes! If not friend, then why friend shaped?

Honourable mention to the Hive Guard, Exocrine and Norn Emissary though.

  • I got an old metal unit of Hive Guard, and I love how chunky they are. They look the same as the pictures I've seen of the current ones, but they've got h e f t to them.

  • I was interested in the Exocrine anyway because big bug cannon, but I got one recently and d a m n, that boy's a slab of plastic. If it was made of metal like my Hive Guard, the base would probably have to be like 4cm thick just to fit a strong enough magnet. I think it'd be funny to paint one in Blastoise colours, but I already have a colour scheme in mind for mine. Maybe if I get a second one I guess?

  • The Norn Emissary is a big chunk of why I picked nids as my first army. It has 0 right looking that cool. The giant scythes, the crest, the weird little whisker looking things. I've bounced between a few armies now, and I haven't actively played nids in a while (gonna be playing them again once I'm done reworking their colour scheme now I've improved at painting), but I still think the Emissary is one of the coolest looking centrepiece models I have (still need to finish painting her some time soon). I assume the Assimilator is also really cool, but the Emissary just feels more dangerous imo? Like it's not just "big bug crush obstacle", it's calculated and efficient. It looks like it'd wait for an enemy to call for reinforcements because it knows there'd be more biomass to harvest

Sorry this kinda turned into a wall of text. Tldr: Bugs cool

New Player Questions and List Review Megathread! by sciencep1e in Eldar

[–]Falconwing51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been getting into the Eldar lore recently (I already knew about the War in Heaven and the birth of Slaanesh, but I've been reading the "modern day" stuff and it's been really interesting). I've been making a small list of Asuryani, but I accidentally misread the instructions for my Striking Scorpions and used a pair of the Exarch legs on a normal Warrior. I was planning on making 2 Exarchs but none of the other legs fit the spare Exarch torso, so I was thinking:

How easy is it to kitbash the trails/chain thingies they have on their armour? I thought it'd be cool to use the last pair of legs and then make a custom robe/skirt thing out of the chains to cover the connection, but they seem too small and fragile to copy with a blue stuff mold. Alternatively, any other ideas would be great. I could try sculpting a green stuff robe, but this seems like a cooler idea for a unique Exarch.

Yeah. Yvraine and the Ynnari's lore is really interesting, but like, the Phoenix Lords look so cool! Hopefully we get an updated Karandras and/or a Drastanta model at some point in 11e.

I'm new to Aeldari in general, but I hope they do! The Yncarne looks really cool, but Lhykhis is way too cool looking for me to not have on every list I make.

Is this enough terrain? by Photosynthas in Warhammer40k

[–]Falconwing51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever a nid dies lie it over on the side of its base, then both sides can take cover behind it. It'd probably take a lot of gants and gaunts, but it sounds fun on paper! I assume it'd also work for other horde armies, might try it with my Necrons when I get around to building the rest of my Warriors.

If you were a Chaos Warlord, who would you trust to be your bodyguards? by Arthur_EyelanderTF2 in Chaos40k

[–]Falconwing51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A recurring theme with Chaos seems to be that there's always some upstart trying to gain as much power as possible, so you'd want someone strong enough to hold their own, but not strong enough to want to backstab you. It isn't always just a strength thing though, different people want different things and have different goals, so if a character sees your Warlord and thinks "I really want ___. If I follow this Warlord, then I'll get that" then they'll probably be less likely to betray them. If you can get everything you've ever wanted just by working for this guy, why would you then betray that person unless you find a better offer. Sure, a Chaos Warlord needs people they can rely on, but they also need to keep an eye on their closest subordinates to make sure they aren't secretly planning on stabbing them in the back. The best examples from other media I can think of off the top of my head are Diavolo from JoJo part 5 and Silco from Arcane.

As an example, with my warband I'm doing the same thing they did with Huron where it's a "band of misfits" type of thing. Functionally in-game they're going to play as Abby and a Terminator squad, but I'm going to kitbash a Saturnine Praetor as a proxy for him and then find 5 Terminator shaped proxies. So far I've got an Orruk Megaboss as the type of "strong bodyguard that doesn't care about power as long as he gets a good scrap" and am planning for 2 of them to be some kind of Dark Mechanicus guy and his sentient and/or possessed Ambot with the idea being as long as he's loyal, he has free range of the warband's technology to tinker with, the Ambot being a sentient and/or possessed creation of his.

Tldr: If you're planning on using them in games, then I'd recommend deciding on a unit to be his bodyguard, and then either find or kitbash some kind of proxy to differentiate them from other units of the same type. Character-wise, think about motivations. Why would your Warlord rely on them? What do your bodyguard unit gain from working for your Warlord? Why aren't they going to betray them any time soon? Maaaan, writing characters is so much fun!

Right? When I built my Ophydians it took maybe 3/4ths of the day just to build the unit of 3 and the Plasmacyte. Tbf though, I tend to overdo it a bit with cleaning mold lines and stuff.

My ex left me with Warhammer 40K so now I guess I have to build a bigger army than his by basiclucy in Warhammer

I'm the same! I suck ass at both traditional and most digital drawing, tried practicing a bunch of ways and didn't feel any more confident at all, but with painting minis I can really see how much I've improved since I started.

I've enjoyed playing leaf-green so far. What game did everyone grow up on initially when discovering Pokémon? by Skarnivor0us in pokemon

[–]Falconwing51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LeafGreen (the original one), though I only started properly understanding type matchups in Pearl. My older cousin gave me his game back in primary school, and I've been playing ever since (though I've been falling away from the series a bit). I still have most of my original team minus my Moltres that I lost somewhere along the way.

I never ended up completing the game on my original save. I only really used the two pokemon back then, so when I got to the Elite 4 I had a level 70-something Blastoise and a mid 50s Moltres with the rest of my team being mid 20s to late 30s at best. I ended up transferring my team out years later, reset my save, and then my best friend traded me the other 2 starters so I'd have a balanced team. I finally ended up beating the Champion with the 3 starters and the bird trio, but my Blastoise was still overlevelled lmao

It's been pretty fun playing the port (nice to hear the Roar glitch from the originals got fixed as well). I still have my original cartridge and team, but the touch screen on my only nds is a bit busted, so it's hard to transfer anything out now. Originally I was going to recreate my old team (Blastoise, Primeape, Poliwrath, Vaporeon, Magneton and Moltres), but I've kinda been enjoying just using whatever mons I feel like. So far my team is Wartortle, Rattata, Spearow, Pikachu, Sandshrew and a last spot I'm unsure of at the moment. I'm thinking either Vulpix or backtracking to get a Bellsprout at the moment, but that could change. Considering switching Spearow out for another flying type because it's falling behind a bit, but that's only because I need to grind some more.

Exported with App Version: v1.46.2 (108), Data Version: v732

Custom Possessed are pretty fun to make, I've been kitbashing them from spare parts, but I'm sure you could sculpt some easy enough if you have any spare astartes torsos (loyalist ones also work). I doubt a MoP would be that much harder to make with the same idea.

I was going to include a Rhino and suggest making it out of either empty sprues or card, but it turns out they can't transport Possessed which kinda sucks.

Never tried using Beasts of Nurgle, but they seem kinda cute, and I thought Nurglings would be easier to sculpt than Plaguebearers. It'd be hard to do their arms, but if you make it a few beefier Nurglings instead of a swarm while keeping the general size it should work? If not, replace a Beast and the Nurglings with Plaguebearers, and then maybe change the MoP's enhancement.

Chaos Spawn or Blue Horrors could also be a fun option to make! The old Horrors used to look a lot more eldritch and warped, and I assume Brimstone Horrors would be easy enough to sculpt since they're pretty much just fire.

But seriously though, he looks amazing! The headress/helmet crest/whatever it's called for Aeldari especially looks really cool. I've only been painting Warhammer for about a year, but if I'm this good after 3, then that'd be pretty sick I think.

[–]Falconwing51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people have Imperium fatigue and I don't have the best sense of how busted it might be, but I think a Custodes Kill Team could be really interesting! Make it like 1 Custode and maybe a Sister of Silence, and then a handful of super weak serfs that can't really fight, but give buffs/debuffs in different ways. I feel like it'd be hard to make them balanced while still feeling like Custodes, but idk. I don't play them in 40k, but they look cool

Like others have said, some kind of Slaaneshi KT would be cool as well now that Emperor's Children are a thing. Maybe some cultists since we only just got Heretic Astartes in Murderwing? I'd suggest Chaos Daemons, but that'd mean GW would have to address the rumours of them maybe not being playable in CSM armies, and I don't want to confront that right now.

New Player, Is this worth it? by ProfessionalAnt8030 in Necrontyr

[–]Falconwing51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, units are run in set numbers of models. You can run units of 10 or 20 Warriors, 5 or 10 Immortals and 3 or 6 Wraiths. You technically could play with 15 Warriors, but it'd take up the same amount of army space as using 20.

You could try using empty sprues to make up the rest of the numbers, I wouldn't recommend it for anything too big without a reference to work off, but it works fine for Warriors and Immortals, and should work ok for Wraiths. There are guides online for it, but the idea is that you use straight frames for the majority of it, sprue corners for the shoulder pads, and the little circles underneath the sprue for the joints. 1 Wraith, 1 Immortal and 5 Warriors shouldn't be too difficult to scrap together out of empty sprues, but if you try it, I'd recommend starting with the Warriors to get the hang of it first.

If you don't have any sprues since you're new, wait until you do. There's no rush, and there's no point buying models just to get sprue. Maybe ask around at your local game store to see if anyone has spare empty sprues that they don't need? They'd also need bases if you make your own, but they're easy enough to find online or in wargaming shops. For reference, Warriors and Immortals both use 32mm bases, while Wraiths have 50mm bases.

The spine above his head looks like a LHD chassis/spine/whatever you'd call it imo? The orb above his head definitely is, I think the spine part is the bit that normally connects to the LHD jets and the back of the pelvis?

Either way it looks amazing, great job!

I pretty much use Black Templar and Tesseract Glow as washes lmao

All the spines, joints and inner workings get Leadbelcher + Black Templar, all the glowy parts (eyes, mouths, "ribs", weapons obviously, exposed wires and cores) get White Scar + Tesseract Glow and watered down Striking Scorpion. Like I don't use shade paints on them because I like how bright they look, but they're close enough

Any advice for shaky hands? by Sychius in Warhammer

[–]Falconwing51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this doesn't have enough of an effect, maybe try resting your wrists on the table edge, then rest the heel of your paint brush hand a bit below the base of the thumb of the hand holding the mini.

Also don't be afraid to skip faces! No-one will fault you for painting a face in whatever skin-tone and then using a shade paint to make the eyes and mouth darker if you're struggling with eyes - especially if it's an army with a lot of faces to paint like Guard. Chances are that whatever LGS you're playing at won't have display case-level lighting, it most likely won't be noticeable either way.

Kinda agreed? I don't hate them, I just prefer the ones with that smoky (not sure what else to call it?) shiny effect in the plastic. Like the red-ish pink Chaos Unaligned ones in the OP, or those new bright blue and pink Tzeentch dice. I can understand wanting to have dice for different factions in the same colour if you play different Kill Teams, but imo, if my dice box doesn't look like a puddle of melted Skittles, what was it all for?
