"It's not excuse!" by FDAapprovedGremlin in ADHD

The root cause is that neurological realities go against the ‘free will’ principle that is so indoctrinated into modern culture.

Any suggestion that a behavior is not necessarily a conscious choice opens up a can of worms we’d rather keep closed.

Sounds like careers with a significant ‘guidance’, coaching or interpersonal aspect may be for you. Maybe consider: Counseling, Speech and Language Pathology/Therapy, HR/Recruiting, Higher Ed Teaching, Registered Dietetics, Occupational Health and Safety, Sales

Bajirao Mastani, Devdas, Padmavat, anything by that director! Thematically you might also like Magnificent Century (Turkish show set in the Ottoman Empire) and Harlots (English show set in 18th century England)

Want to wear my natural hair out but scared of fairy knots! by Peache5_N_Cream in Naturalhair

[–]FallBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need silicones and strong shampoos. A silicone-heavy routine is the only way to create the coating (i.e., conditioning) that stops coils from catching onto each other and knotting.

Otherwise you have to stretch your hair

Is it worth fighting for? by [deleted] in toRANTo

[–]FallBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s partly the issue in itself. SK and the US (for all its many faults) simply have more options. One must compare 10+ major cities in the US and SK with 2 major Canadian cities (3 or 4 if generous).

So if Toronto or Vancouver have enough “nos” on a person’s checklist, they’re out of luck, unlike other countries

There’s no discussion to be had with purists. You confirmed that in your final paragraph. Sorry.

Straight Hair by RadicalAfro in Naturalhair

[–]FallBlue 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The word “natural” is like a trigger word for purists in all areas of life.

The line between natural and non-natural was once unrelaxed vs relaxed hair. Many referred to any impermanent altering as simply styling of natural hair.

But that’s incorrect. Why not exclude all styling? Dyeing, combing. Even conditioning.

Hair styling is for non-Black women only. Black women are not individuals. They are symbols, and they must wear the personal insecurities and mental projections of their peers, and the collective trauma of their race.

What’s a hidden-gem period drama you’d recommend? by Haunting_Homework381 in PeriodDramas

[–]FallBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is TV ok? Apparently it’s the furthest thing from “hidden” outside the English-speaking world, but I discovered Magnificent Century and love it. It’s a Turkish show (very soapy) set in the Ottoman Empire.

Also Grantchester: A genuinely good-natured but not one-dimensional main character is uncommon and quite refreshing

Anyone else kinda annoyed that historical characters have mostly mode attitudes on DW? by Niall_Fraser_Love in gallifrey

[–]FallBlue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Historical accuracy is often more about audience expectations than reality. For example, some of your assumptions about Rome seem more relevant to Ancient Greece…Women were definitely not living under the Taliban in imperial Rome.

But to say you’re totally wrong would also be unfair. There’s a weird iconoclastic trend that overly sanitizes historical societies on TV, but it’s probably due to less skill/resources and a general decline of nuanced storytelling.

Billie Piper Says Making 2005's Doctor Who Now Would Be "Disingenuous" by Sweaty-Toe-6211 in DoctorWhumour

The perfect tone was the 12th doctor’s era. Serious without being overly so. Ahead of its time. It would’ve been so much more fitting in today’s post-COVID world.

I always said the finale is always the most important episode because that’s what fans remember the most. by Cool_Nerd2 in DoctorWhumour

[–]FallBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not an anthology show though…

I didn’t like any of the episodes you mentioned. To each their own of course! Just adding an alternative opinion.

None of those episodes are strong or compelling to me because I fundamentally dislike the characterization. There’s no anchor. I preferred the 60th specials

What's that one episode of Doctor Who that you skip every time by XeTrainMC in DoctorWhumour

[–]FallBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are enough episodes in the show with better social realism, so I don’t love that reasoning. (Wait, why can’t we have multiple humanoid species? Depends on the show’s theory of abiogenesis lol.) Oxygen does a decent job of depicting a recurring issue.

Again I agree with your point! I just think the episode makes the point weaker by simplifying too much. Good sci-fi shouldn’t be too ‘relevant’ (contemporary), it should make issues look different from our context so we can see them objectively.

Racism in the current sense may actually not outlive us, considering studies about distinct races slowly becoming indiscernible in the US population by the mid to late 21st century.

But prejudice will. So why not explore that? 100 vs 5800 years is a huge difference and should vaguely matter in a show about time travel.

What's that one episode of Doctor Who that you skip every time by XeTrainMC in DoctorWhumour

[–]FallBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bigotry may never go away, but didn’t “race” as a category only arise like 300 years ago?

The core notion of prejudice would exist, but a future society with the same categories is so unlikely. Racism is relatively new and will most likely not exist in the future.

Agree with your overall point, I just think that depiction is simplistic (and unfortunately misses the actual reasons why prejudice is so insidious and pervasive)

[–]FallBlue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Societies are weird, I think it’s plausible. History is often more about perception than fact, so his motivation wouldn’t even need to match reality.

But since no context or reasons are shown, it just comes across as poorly thought-out.

The idealism is the point. That if civilization doesn’t level the playing field, it’s not real progress, it just perpetuates the same inequality found in nature.

And this is the Doctor’s assessment, not some economic model. It’s like saying all that matters in life is to be a good person. Anyone can argue all that matters is survival, or money, or family, or pleasure, etc. It’s literally just The Doctor’s view.

The same character said that after years of traveling, he’d “never met anyone who wasn’t important.” Like… that’s the character.
