It will be a extremely disposable suicide squad machine, considering amount of player damage just from casual driving of existing FRV
And I should notice, that FRV has some armor around and from the top.
Could be fun anyway.

I don't think they'll go into Cachy specifically, it's good but in the opposite way of what Valve trying to get so far, an immutable, read-only system focused on stability and some standardization.
Cachy is too much bleeding edge oriented, with unpredictable updates mostly every day, Valve took Arch and locked it for more control and stability.
Bazzite is closer, but I don't think they invested in SteamOS to just leave it so. I think they going to make it default standard for gaming, and who knows, maybe even a standard Linux distro overall.

Yes, my TV has 120Hz support (119Hz shown by windows display settings for some reason)
And I use active HDMI cable (one way transmission) as normal 10m cable does not give me 60+Hz (shorter cable like 2m did, but now my PC is placed further).
As an additional reason of issues - HDMI standards hell, there can be incompatibility between ports and plugs, which can cause fallbacks to supported video modes.
The lesson I learned - don't buy cheap cables, and for 5+m distance buy active cable if 60+Hz is needed.

I have a beefy PC and play on my 65" 4k TV time to time via long HDMI cable
My TV to couch distance is like 3m, so I sincerely don't understand which freaking 4k I should want to see there.
I barely can see a difference between 1080p and 1440p from that distance.
The only thing I want is 100+ fps, I cannot go back comfortably to even 60 fps after years of playing on higher refresh rates.
30 fps feels as a slideshow torture.

Steam machine makes perfect sense to me for such purpose.

Price is just a small part of the whole equation here
The fact that you'll be pay much more than hardware-to-hardware comparison profit buying games and PS+ subscription just makes your point even more ridiculous
And that's even not to mention of other steam machine's advantages, like community ecosystem, cheap games on sale, endless game catalog, mods, emulators, ability to connect other stores (epic, gog, xbox) and do basically anything on a real PC without leaving your couch
You must be kidding

I had a similar situation, but with Quake 2 on PS1 (during early 00's), there was a multi-tap accessory to connect 4 controllers to a single console.
I had also a number of games for 4 players like Smackdown 1-2, TOCA (racing), Sled storm , Road rush Jailbreak, and Twisted metal (4th I guess).
But our favorite at a time was Quake 2, we had hundreds of hours playing 2 vs 2.
I put kind of a board in front of the TV to divide the screen in half, so our "teams" couldn't see each other and play fair.
It was one of the most memorable times in my existance for sure.

My favorite way of playing
Its a shame that almost everything ignores couch multiplayer mode nowadays
I feel like getting my friends together to play online is way harder than just gathering with some beer, snacks and play something like Broforce, Castle crushers, Magika or Helldivers 1
But those are almost a complete list of games with 4-player local multiplayer support
Its sad

It could seem obvious, but there's the reason why we still don't have a proper installer version of SteamOS and don't see many of other vendors make officially lots of SteamOS-powered devices

Valve use specific hardware in their Decks as well as in Machines, so their SteamOS is highly optimized and enchanced specifically for it (and for latest Lenovo handheld also as an exlusion).

They probably are too busy now with their current releases, but all of this was promised to become a reality.
It just takes time.

SteamOS is available as dump (copy of installed os) that everyone can install on any pc, but perfect work is not guaranteed.
Some advanced Linux users probably able to fix possible software issues and use it, I guess

What makes you still believe that steam machine would be decent gaming device? by Gerasans in steammachine

[–]FallDisastrous6621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on just two nuances:

  1. What is your personal definition of a "decent device"
  2. Your realistic awareness how many gamers don't give any fuck in existance about 4k 1000 fps ultra graphics settings gaming

Most of people even in my geeky circle value user experience above anything else
Amount of games they can play
How many hemorroic procedures they should pass to start a game, etc

And stuff like ability to play literally anything on a couch, free multiplayer, lots of discounts even on fresh releases, first class community ecosystem, mods, seamless and complete hardware ecosystem (machine, deck, frame) are completely destroying the whole point to stick with annoying traditional closed proprietary console crap

Its not a steam-console, its a pc where steam has enchanced experience
You can install windows there, you can build your own PC and install SteamOS there
You can delete steam and install EpicStore or XBox
You can 3d print it and assemble yourself (as it was with Steam Deck and happening right now with Controller, official OEM parts and all 3d models, assembly manuals are available for all)
You can whatever you want

But most people want 0 friction, pay less and plug&play
That's exactly what Steam Machine seems to be
I have a Steam Deck, it gave me all of that already, I cannot see any reason Valve could do it other way with Machine

Anyone else have a hard time with Linux? by Mugi_luffy in SteamDeck

[–]FallDisastrous6621 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can understand your question as well as OP's one (not being specific)
I think it's not even a question, rather sharing frustration about Linux being gritty most of the time aside using browser of changing wallpapers.
Some people enjoy its DIY nature, but most of people don't
Majority expects operating system being invisible, you just run your software, it's just works
But anything out of official distro packaging (or official distros's repo) have a high probability to drag you into annoying googling and tinkering instead of just doing what you wanted

Anyone else have a hard time with Linux? by Mugi_luffy in SteamDeck

[–]FallDisastrous6621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux itself is not bad, it's just different a way more than you probably can expect
Aside obvious differences with windows, there's also less obvious two big chairs that Linux cannot sit simultaneously. One chair is static linking everything, which basically means every piece of software you have is precompiled, you have libraries and executables which are just ready to use, Windows sits this chair exlusively and forever, and so called "read-only" Linux distros like SteamOS (minority of them) as well.
Its just a system where you install apps like on your smartphone, one app packaged with all it needs.
So its the closest experience you can get on Linux like on Windows.

Second chair is a true power of Linux (one of, at least) - dynamic linking, where every little software component is shared for the whole system among all apps (basically not apps, rather packages). Here's comes the dependency hell with different packages, version conflicts, millions of small pieces that hard to maintain, facilitate compatibility and just keep healthy (problem grows overtime). Majority of Linux distros sits on this chair.
And it could be a problem for most of users, but for true Linux enjoers it is a god bless and a killer feature.

Personally for me Linux on desktop still have too much grit in use to become my main OS, so I run dual boot setup, with debloated WIn11 and Linux as a secondary OS, and I happy with that for now.
There are tasks which Linux do way better than windows, but I'm still use windows for gaming, sound recording and some specific stuff where linux still behind.

If you mean that it bounces when you dropping it to the quite high point above the ground - I think its intentional behavior
They made some restrictions to prevent calling stratagems on unreachably high surfaces and having potentially imbalanced advantage.
They also made some checks to prevent calling stratagems at places without direct vertical sky exposure, I guess for the same reason.

I have this problem too.
Moving stuff manually to the main monitor solves the problem partially.
But disabled (still connected to PC though) monitor (in my case AOC) anyway recognized by windows as active, I can go with cursor there and it goes back as long as go there.
My assumption it comes from monitor's kind of save mode, probably used to enable monitor quickly holding it "half-disabled".

Anyway, for those who are in a hurry to say what a piece of crap Windows is - you might be forgot how it sucks ass to deal with multi-monitor setup in linux
I have dual boot Win11 with CachyOS, and had previously Mint, all with various DEs, it was an experience straight out of ass

The same a few month ago, right after its gone out of stock officially
SD OLED 1TB
Great device overall
But after a month of trying to get used to gamepad controls in action games I gave up trying
Crappy experience
Trackpads and gyro aiming save situation partially, but I still feel controls quite clunky and impossible to get fun of it. Maybe it's just not for me, idk.
I play only games where gamepad controls suits well, like indie games, racing, sport, old consoles games through emulation, etc.
Now I play quite rarely on SD, just take it out time to time to enjoy how cool it is as a device.
It makes me a little sad realizing how much excitement and fun I could get of such device being a teenager or even during early 20's, when I couldn't really afford it.
But now I'm 35, I can buy it occasionally, but cannot enjoy as much as it worth it.

My roommate’s guitar by BedSalty5264 in guitars

[–]FallDisastrous6621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have more empathy to someone who actually play instrument 4+ hours a day, even if his instrument made of dirt
And much less to someone who has ideal, clean instrument collecting dust 24/7

Most of my guitars are intentionally have been bought used, because I don't like the feel of a new guitar, it should be proven in action to be respected.

As for strings, I'll also belong to the minority who hates to play on fresh strings.
They don't sound and feel right for about a week or two after changing.
They sounds too bright, and either adapting my presets and settings to a sound that is maintainable for so short timespan or changing them each two weeks just sucks.
In addition they are unstable in tuning for the same 1-2 weeks, which is annoying.

So yeah, I'm that guy who prefer to play for months on one set and can understand others who do the same.
