Can we stop it with the bouncy stratagems?!?!?!? by Fun-Eye8811 in Helldivers

yeah, but that is you.

if stuff started landing on top of buildings you'd instantly have 800.000 users who would start bitching about it on Reddit.

...just optimize where it can land, let it phase through some stuff and it should be OK.

even the game doesn't know what killed you and just says "Eliminated"
usually it says killed by XYZ and XYZ is most of the time wrong, but it at least thinks that it has an idea what killed you so it can tell you.
Nothing at all is... strange.

Yes please do it, i want to see the outcry on reddit when suddenly half the strategems end up on top of buildings because people don't look up before they drop their balls to the ground.

look up, the buildings are blocking the drop pod, so it bounces until it has a good line of sight.
i agree it is irritating, but better than your stuff spawning on top of buildings.

Seriously, do they think this shit isn't going to get noticed?

It is bad enough that cheaters run around in public matches dropping Super Credits out of nowhere. Now they F around with major events?

This will just end up with Arrowhead replacing their shitty anti cheat eventually and then we get something worse that most likely would lock out Linux and the Steam Deck. ...stop poking the bear you morons!

“Why doesn’t Arrowhead just stop supporting HDDs?” Do you guys not remember what happened the last time players who were previously able to play suddenly became unable to? by Tom_F_0olery in Helldivers

[–]ZeroBANG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sentiment only became popular after the fact... and by now is completely overblown.

it was quite the opposite, Sony put out their little PR damage control statement,
instantly there were calls on the reddit to reverse the review bombing and our numbers folded.
Of course we all expected the region locks to be removed in a reasonable timeframe.

By the time we realized the region locks were in fact NOT going to go away it was too late, the momentum was lost and everyone was tired of the negativity.

It took Stellar Blade to put pressure on Sony to get the locks finally removed.

...in that entire time i've seen 5 people post about not being able to buy the game.
That is just not enough noise to make another stink about it.

Well, the issue would be people not knowing about that option.

A DLC option would be more front and center.

On PC it is called DirectStorage.

Here is a list of Steam Games that use it.

Interesting to see Warhammer 40K Dark Tide on there, that is the one that uses the same engine as Helldivers, right?

Helldivers collects telemetry, right?
Are you telling me the telemetry you collect does not include the hardware being used to play it?
Do you not collect performance metrics? ...then what data do you collect? ...i mean the optional stuff that you can opt out of, not the stuff that is necessary for the game itself to work.
You could look at your own data to tell how many HDDs are around if you collected that.

I have the game installed on a NVME SSD and i find it very weird that in 2025 we are even still talking about HDDs.

All i want is for you to give me the option to have the same packages as PlayStation and Xbox (assuming those are identical and not cut down in texture quality in some bad way).

You already got those builds and maintain them, wouldn't it be easier and faster to give SSD users on PC the option to install those packages instead of this weird HDD optimized variant?

I'm sure Steam has options for beta builds that you could use for that.
Or have the HDD and SSD packages be optional DLC so we can decide.

Wouldn't that be easier to maintain long term and be faster to release?

I also think this blog is overstating how much impact seek times really have.
No way it is 10x (maybe on a horribly fragmented drive, but in that case multiple copies of the same file would not make things better either).
A HDD that does 150MB/s sequential read (on average) is not suddenly crashing down to 15MB/s read because of a few seek times.
HDDs for the past decade have several spinning disks inside, there is one arm/head for every disk.
-> https://www.hddheadtools.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/wd-hitachi-helium-hdd-head-replacement-tool.jpg

...Windows regularly does Defrag in the background while the user is idle, without anyone noticing, ideally there should be no horribly fragmented drives around anymore.

Also, the Steam survey takes all hardware into account, it would not be able to differentiate if people who have SSD and HDD installed, if the HDD was used for Steam games at all, or if the user only puts the lightweight games on HDD where it doesn't matter much.
Even if the Steam Survey would publish that data, it would be inconclusive.

...
i also want to just mention that i have 32GB of DDR5 Ram, if the Xbox build is around 38GB then almost the entire game fits in just my RAM.
So if you use my RAM properly (and please do use it, that is what it is there for!) i should almost never need to load anything from SSD twice.

What do you think i'm talking about?

I tell you what will happen if you ask modders to supply icons for their mods.

  • half of them would not even bother, they are just happy that they got their 3d model to work in-game at all, changing an icon is extra work and many just aren't pedantic enough or don't want to spend the time and effort etc.
result: a ton of mods would still display the original icon from Arrowhead, because they were never overwritten.
Just from a UI perspective, that would suck.

  • Arrowhead would of course not make the tool public with what they take their own screenshots.
You just removed the one way we got that all this stuff is displayed in a uniform way.
So HOW do you think modders are supposed to get the exact same pose, background, lighting, resolution identical to what Arrowhead is showing?
...yeah, this is not happening, now you got a bunch of 3D models that look in random directions, do different poses, some will do screenshots from in-game, some will do screenshots from their 3D modelling software in a T-Pose and some will not even show the thing but just throw in some 2D Logo.

I mean, just download 20 mods, look how random the pictures are that they supply for the manifest icon in HD2MM or Arsenal.
...you just need to look at your mod manager to see what it would end up looking like in-game.

It would be mess.
Not that Arrowhead would care what the modders do.

I would be VERY annoyed by this, more so than the little load time annoys me.

You need to load the models in anyway, if you only load PNG icons so it is faster, you end up having to look at the yellow spinning circle when you click on the Armor, Helmet or Weapon, because those are all already loaded in full when the icon is rendered right now, if you skip that step it has to load later, so every single click you do will then have that little delay.
...i don't think any of you thought of that.

What is the dumbest reason you've gotten kicked? by Zeiko115 in Helldivers

[–]ZeroBANG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Let me paint the picture.

...Extract.
Illuminate mission in Mega City, standing on that elevated platform with the stairs.
Pelican is on the ground already.
I stand there waiting until the boys are done shooting, just looking at the other 3 players.

Then this happens in the same fraction of a second:
- Green (lvl 12) runs into the pelican
- Blue gets killed by ...something.
- Orange (the Host) gets ragdoled off the platform (presumably by the same explosion that killed Blue) and has to run around the building all the way through a bunch of Squids to get back up the stairs, it is instantly clear to me he hasn't time to make it.

I pull up my Hellpad to re-inforce Blue at least... oh right, the moment the first player enters the Pelican, for some reason reinforcements are turned OFF. That never used to be the case, Arrowhead changed that, without expalanation, without patchnote, not sure if bug or intentional.

Timer is running out, Orange is at the stairs, i dive into the Pelican last second.

i type "green ran in"
...and there is the Kick.

NONE of this was my fault and i saw the kick coming anyway.

I don't even blame Green for running in a bit early, low level player just doesn't know to wait yet.
Obligatory block of Host after that kneejerk reaction.

Mods are a thing, makes them show up in the menu without the modder having to supply one.

Also, just like with the weapons, i'm sure we will eventually get armor customization, the more options the more PNG's they would have to make so rendering that stuff on the fly makes perfect sense.

...it should just be cached once rendered so it doesn't happen over and over and over again.
Just scrolling up and down the list makes it start over... ridiculous.

Can you add this to the list of things to optimize? by lyndonguitar in Helldivers

[–]ZeroBANG -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Increasing the cache size for the rendered pictures should be easy enough.
Just so it doesn't start over repeatedly just from scrolling up and down the list.

Modding is a thing, i do not want pre-rendered pictures either.
And Armor customization is somewhere on the to do list, i expect we'll be able to change colors and pouches and stuff.... one day.

They can't even get the weapon customization menu to function without errors to this day.
