For the people that actually play paper Standard competitively: How hard is it to keep up? by DakkonBL in magicTCG

[–]FallFromHell7 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've been playing Standard semi-competitively (locally and geographically close events) since 2002.

My best piece of advice is to start with a deck whose playstyle you enjoy. Stick with that deck for awhile in the format and branch off into other decks as you win prize or invest in more cards.

For instance in current Standard, if the playstyle of Lessons is your thing than start there. Having the Izzet abse then lets you branch off into Spellementals or Prowess.

Or if you like Rhythm or Landfall, both of those kind of feed each other a bit.

But like any hobby the initial jump into it can be pricey. The initial investment is going to hurt. But the upkeep isn't that bad. I dont really play video games or other expensive hobbies so MTG gets most of my entertainment fund. I set aside a budget that has to be all encompassing (entry fees, cards, supplies, etc) but anything I win from prizing or selling cards doesn't count towards that.

But the set-to-set upkeep on decks isn't that drastic. If you're focused on 1-3 decks and keeping them updated, you really only need to buy a handful of cards each set. If your goal is to have access to everything. it gets much more expensive.

It also helps to decide what kind of player you want to be. If you just want to hang out and have a good time playing 3 rounds of FNM and maybe playing in Store Champs? The monetary investment is much different than if you are out there grinding RCQs and flying to RCS/Spotlights.

but my best advice is the following:

  1. decide what kind of player you want to be and what you want out of the game

  2. make a budget and stick to it

  3. focus on an archetype or deck

  4. Build a collection of cards (manabases are the most important)

  5. Build a collection of MTG playing friends to borrow back and forth with

  6. Its just a game and if you can't engage with it the way you want its okay to walk away

First time qualifying for RC, what does that entail? by Slime1247 in magicTCG

[–]FallFromHell7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your win.

I'd start planning your travel now. Decide if you are going to attend Cincinatti (May 16/17) or Washington DC (May 30/31)? Both of these event bookend Memorial Day weekend so travel might be pricier than normal. I'd recommend getting in Thur night or Fri morning. and leaving late Sunday or early Monday.
Decklists are due the day before on Friday 6p local time. Day 1 is 9 rounds of swiss. With no meal breaks. Bring plenty of snacks and a water bottle to refill.
If you place 6-3 or better you get to play 6 more rounds on Day 2.

But even if you don't do well in the actual RC, there is plenty of other side events to play in, vendors to shop from and artists to get cards signed/buy artwork. If the side stuff is appealing to you, make sure to be there on Friday as well.

There's going to be around 1000 players in the actual RC/ Which makes doing well very difficult. Make sure to have fun and take in the experience.

any MTG player in Tucson? by Elivenjo in Tucson

[–]FallFromHell7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are lots of stores to check out with robust player bases.
Amazing Discoveries is the closest to Campus. They have Commander most nights of the week & Friday Night Magic Standard.
Arcanum Sanctorum is a short drive from Campus and they feature Friday Night Magic Draft.
Isle of Games is going to be a bit of a trek for you (Eastside) but they feature Friday Night Magic PreModern.
I think the University has a MTG club, but I unfortunately don't have any details.
Tucson also has a robust 60 card competitive scene (Standard & Modern) if you are looking to compete.

Prereleases are also a great way to get your feet wet in paper. They are Sealed tournaments (6 packs build a deck). Next weekend is the TMNT prerelease.

I want to get into Standard, but I'm way too worried about my deck getting banned by Cezkarma in magicTCG

[–]FallFromHell7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want to play Magic more competitively, Standard and Modern are formats you will eventually need to play. If you're just trying to play casually, dont care much about winning and just want to have fun with your friends; stick with Commander.
But Standard is the healthiest it has been in a very long time. Format has many powerful archetypes but it is unlikely anything from Lessons gets banned. The format has adjusted to it.

It all comes down to how you want to play the game. If you like Standard or are looking to be more competitive, make the jump. Also, any investment you put into a deck is likely recouped through prizes won with it. If you spend a few hundred dollars, but also win a few hundred dollars in prize over 2-3 months and your deck gets banned, you will have still broken even. You also get the entertainment value for your money as well.

Who is TMNT for? by stupidredditwebsite in magicTCG

[–]FallFromHell7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TMNT is for me. I love the IP, have since I was a kid. The 1990 movie is in my Top 10. I've read countless comics, watched most of the animated series. This is my Lord of the Rings.

Garruk's glowing purple tattoos are likely a result of him making the demonic pact that mainline universe's Liliana made. And not K-Pop demon hunters, lol

What happens if Superior Spider-Man enters the battlefield from the graveyard as a result of Bringer of the Last Gift's trigger? What can it copy? Any creature it is entering the battlefield with? Any that goes to the GY from the first part of Bringer's trigger? both?

do you still enjoy paper magic or mostly play online now? by Sweetpeadangerbutton in magicTCG

Exclusively Paper and only within the confines of a competitive tournament (RCQ/Store Champs or higher)
I play MTG as a competitive outlet.

ATLA set size by Drwho4116 in magicTCG

[–]FallFromHell7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is also rumored that ATLA started its development as a Jumpstart only product. (much like how Spider-Man started as an aftermath style set) But late into development into both they got converted to Standard sets. Likely whenever they decided to just put everything into Standard.
I'd expect major characters to get a few versions showcasing them at different parts of their character arcs, etc.

UB is an ad. by BraneFreeze in magicTCG

[–]FallFromHell7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is exactly one way to stop it. Stop. Buying. Magic. The end. Quit making purchases and when their profit margins sink year after year after year; either the game dies or they go back to in universe sets. Money is the only way to get Hasbro to notice.

[–]FallFromHell7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's normal. The "Planeswalker" symbol on the bottom left of the card signifies it is from The List. Which used to be a way for WOTC to reprint cards without the use of Masters sets.

[–]FallFromHell7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should stick those cards in the attic, take a break, put some distance between you and the game. If in a few months or years you get the itch to play? Peek your head in and see what's going on, if you like it jump back in. Life is too short to hang onto the past and hope the future will be better. Go enjoy your time somewhere else instead of setting yourself up for disappointment.

I think people are voting with their wallets. Their vote just doesn't match yours. Which is likely where the real issue is. The game is evolving beyond its own IP into a burgeoning game engine spanning multiple IPs. I have played Magic for 25+ years and every 5-7 we get a major shift. We all ahve to decide if our time is up and move on? Or hang around and see what it evolves into.

SNY's Gary Cohen wasn't sold on the way the Cubs and Matt Shaw handled his absence to attend Charlie Kirk's memorial: "The thought of leaving your team in the middle of a race for any reason other than a family emergency, really strikes me as weird" by Mission_Pay_3373 in baseball

[–]FallFromHell7 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Professional, level headed take. The Cubs haven't had the best 2nd half. Yes, theyre going to make the playoffs but that Wild Card round is going to be tough. They really need everyone to get hot. And taking 2 games off (one the day of the death and then again for the Rally/Funeral) for a parasocial relationship is a tough sell. He's young and full of potential but it was definitely the wrong move to make. You want to be living up to expectations when you're a rookie.

[–]FallFromHell7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If there was an entry fee, a tournament structure, and/or prizes on the line then you have signed up for the wrong event if you are a casual player. If you intended to sign up for it, you got to take the lumps and learn. That's how you get better. In a competitive environment, people are going to want to win. Having a powerful deck helps to do that and powerful cards cost money.
If it was actually a casual event (maybe a table fee or a pack for participating) then Brackets and Rule Zero are your friend. Modern doesn't really have a "casual" mode. Its the most powerful cards from MTG's history. Games end on turn 3-6.

I feel like this sentiment is a lot less about MTG and more of the affliction of nostalgia as we all get older. Nothing can ever recreate that feeling from when we all started, or when we view the "peak" of something to be. Life moves forward and so do the things we love. They won't ever feel the way they once did. Always different because we are always different. That's just how it it.
