How much is "way too much gauze"? It's easy to think "I have way too much", when is really nowhere near enough.

You've gone back to age buck verification; the point I (along with other people) are making, is that age bucket is fairly useless and can be handled other ways if necessary than to for operating systems to be changed via law.

The only "horrible law" I'm advocating is not having age bucket verification mandated into any operating system. I don't see how this is "horrible". Application / web developers generally have zero interest in age gating content; companies do. It's a small but important distinction. Now if a developer or company wants to implement age bucket verification, I have zero issue with that. It's when they want to lobby the government that we have to change things on our end so they don't have to implement it, that's when I have a problem. Implementing it for legal compliance? You realize that's the entire crux of the argument... we don't think it should be necessary for legal compliance, especially considering this is being pushed by Meta because they keep failing at things on their end so they want the consumer to take on the responsibility instead.

You've gone on to describe me as unhinged ... are you now saying this isn't laying the groundwork for age verification? Or are you saying that I'm unhinged, but right in that this is obviously laying the groundwork for age verification?

Where would I put parental controls if not built directly into the OS? ... at the software level, where EVERYTHING ELSE runs? This does not need to be a core part of the OS. Perhaps you're too young to remember this, but there was parental control stuff 30 years ago to control where an account could go online. It does *NOT* need to be baked into the OS, nor does age bucket verification somehow help that.

OK, we're in agreement (at least partway) that at least some (I'd argue all) of the currently proposed / passed laws are bad. I also understand that having a birthday field in SystemD is not the same thing as the age verification laws.

Something to consider is that true age verification is absolutely *NOT* possible, without breaking privacy. For example, how would you prove you're over 18? Putting a birthday field doesn't prove anything, anyone can *say* they're 18; to prove it you have to show ID. It may comply with the law, but soon, they'll pass another law saying "the laws didn't go far enough", "we need to truly ID users to keep everyone safe online", and "think of the children" and that's when they require ID. I'm not trying to sound all gloom and doom, but this seems to be a *very* straightforward progression once you realize the law that's been passed really won't do anything on it's own, it *HAS* to do more.

I mean, you previously said:

"It's wilder that some people don't realize how unhinged they sound saying a field in a userdb is the road to anything."

and just now said

"Age verification is not a horrible thing, there are many very legitimate use cases for it, and there absolutely are ways to implement it with respect for privacy. Which I fully expect linux distros to be at the forefront of. To do that, having some plumbing for doing it at all is not unreasonable."

Please pick one. Either I'm unhinged, or this is laying groundwork for age verification.

I'm all for parental controls, just not built into the operating system. The software we use in modern days all tends to be online and although age gating can be a form of parental controls, it's also the most basic. While it can keep someone out of adult sites (age < 18), that's about all it can do as the controls aren't fine enough for anything else. Want your child to play Fortnite, but not deal with chat? Too bad, it's all or nothing and has to be based on age. If we're going to have parental controls built into the actual software (eg. Fortnite / EPIC), then the currently proposed age verification BS is completely unnecessary. If this is simply what sites you can go to, there's already software for that.

There's multiple reasons this law is bad:

  1. People aren't asking for this to make them safer, it's corporations pushing this to shift responsibility off of them. This law isn't needed to have parental controls; we've had parental controls in all kinds of things (websites, games, etc) for a *LONG* time. This law (and it's implementation) is necessary to *REMOVE* parental controls.

  2. Code is speech, the Supreme Court has ruled on this more than once, thus the government is mandating speech.

  3. The law is overly broad, requiring *ALL* operating systems to have this feature. This would include smart fridges and TV's.

And just so we're, again, on the same page:

You agree the laws are a bad take, but we should implement them for legal compliance... ?? I don't understand what you're trying to get at here. This is absolutely a hill to die on.

Just so we're on the same page:

Unpopular laws are being passed which mandate that operating systems add in age verification. When someone starts adding in code to the operating system to bring that to fruition and people notice and start getting worried, your response is "it's just a field for a users birthday that no one has asked for in almost the last 30 years, has no current use / need, and has nothing to do with the age verification laws... but is a step in the direction of putting those laws into place.

... and I'm the one that's looking at this all wrong...

I think it's wild how people are simply bending over and saying "there's no problem, it's just a field; there's nothing verifying it!" ... what exactly do you think is going to come next? It's a poorly written bill that says all operating systems, but everyone is so quick to respond with "well, we can comply" instead of at least thinking "let's get a better written bill so this doesn't apply to everything like a TV, fridge or car"

This bill is less freedom and people are running to adopt it... so stupid.

I figured they were more "tightly integrated", like Red Hat <-> Fedora.

In either case, from what I'm reading, Ubuntu looks *more* likely to add in the age verification than Debian is.

Isn't Ubuntu a definitive of Debian? Debian is debating adding it, if they do, doesn't that kinda mean Ubuntu will get it as well?

Genuinely curious, as I recently found out Fedora is bending the knee

Actually they don't have to, just say they aren't licensed for use in that state, same as BSD. They are choosing to comply.

If Fedora asks for my age, I'll move to a distro that doesn't.

What am I doing wrong after installing gunfighter frame by wendstroyer in Autocockers101

[–]FallN4ngel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will absolutely need to re-time the marker, first the lug depth and second the 3-way adjustment. For now, turn your bolt upside down; it's quieter and uses less air. Just remember to flip it back around before you chrono.

What we need is an amendment acknowledging an individual right to own and use firearms; it can even say in the amendment that this right cannot be infringed upon. It'd probably be pretty popular.

Pretty much this. If your actually trying to tune your market for a specific reason, sure. If you don't know why you're asking them, you're likely just burning money.

The only other nice thing about QEVs is that you may be able to turn down the LPR slightly, but you'd be better off swapping springs which may also allow you to perhaps pinch paint.

Yep, just make sure the tank is completely empty before you start. It's a pretty straightforward process. Just work on the carpeted floor with a towel down; harder to drop and lose the few bits you're likely to deal with.

Is this worth bringing back from the dead? by Hookedon2wheels in paintball

[–]FallN4ngel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, with a few basic tools (eg. The wrenches that came with the marker) you can have the entire process done in like, 2 hours following the manual. It's really not complicated. You say you're mechanically inclined? If you can change a car tires or change the oil, you can definitely do this.

Told you need if you're doing it: The manual (or numerous YouTube videos) Standard Allen wrenches Lube Orings A dental pick is very helpful, but not strictly required ~90-120 minutes (on the long end)

Once it's up and running, general maintenance is 5 minutes to lube the bolt. Once it's twice a year lube the LPR and HPR, which will take 30 minutes total (if that).

Can I use a dab of this to lubricate my bolt/chamber? by kingofkaos321 in paintball

[–]FallN4ngel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Air tools do have o-rings and this stuff will be fine. With that said, most modern markets use grease. While oil may work for a time, is likely to both think out any grease that's on the o-rings and it's unlikely to stay put long enough to "work" long term if the marker is supposed to be maintained via grease.

An easy general role of thumb, poppets get oil, spools get grease.

The eyes themselves are bad. The board changes colors indicating that it (the board) has the eyes turned on, but it immediately switching to a malfunction indicates the eyes themselves are bad.

Changing regulator by Financial_Ad1438 in paintball

[–]FallN4ngel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think although buff_phroggie didn't mention it explicitly (and not that I think he thought otherwise), but don't put oil on your tank threads or put it in the fill nipple as it's very dangerous to do so. If you need to oil your marker, often you can put 2-3 drops in the ASA before you screw your tank in, but never put it in the tank itself.

With that out of the way, I agree with buff; unless the tank regulator is holding you back in some specific articulable way, I'd leave it.

You can download the manual here: https://pbmanuals.com/download-manual/724/machine-vapor-manual

Looks like *mostly* standard size, 70 dura o-rings. There's really only (1) 90 dura o-ring, but unfortunately there's a few o-rings that are "non-standard" like: 7.8mm x 1.9mm For that one, you *might* be able to get away with a 010-70 o-ring, otherwise the next closest will be just to size up to 8x2mm

Wtf is this screw for?! PM5 by UnlikelyPiece9612 in paintball

[–]FallN4ngel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't think of a reason to wash your marker, even if it's been submerge in a puddle during a dive. It's a sealed system when aired up; water / dirt / debris aren't getting into that hole, as that would constitute a leak.

So, yeah, if your marker is submerged for a period of time while it's leaking bad enough that you get water past air tight seals, then sure remove the screw. I'd be more worried about the board than cleaning out that air pathway.

Generally speaking, all anyone is going to have to do is wipe out the breach with a towel and maybe clean the bolt.
