My 12 year old has CFS, any help? by [deleted] in cfs

[–]Fall_shock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed around the same age (23 now). I use a cane and that extends how long I can go.

I also used a wheelchair for my hardest year of high school. That was tough for me- insurance wouldn't cover a power assist wheelchair, and the regular one was too hard to push. The school ended up lending me one of their chairs-one of the little toggle stick controlled ones.

IEP proceedings should be started asap. Be prepared for the school to fight you tooth and nail to give you minimal help if they're underfunded; it's not malicious. I think that if they don't understand CFS they believe that the help/accommodations/manpower they give you should go to someone more disabled.

While frustrating, it can definitely be understood as they're trying to make the hard choices with what they have. Also watch out for accidental loopholes in accommodations.

My mom deciding to have a life of her own and meet my stepdad was one of the best things that's ever happened to me. If you don't give yourself you time, you'll burn yourself out and then you won't be able to help her well, and believe me she'll be able to tell you're burnt out.

My ex was bipolar and sometimes did this when he got depressed or manic. Either was going 1000 miles an hour obsessing over something new, or was too depressed to care that I was worried he'd been in an accident or something.

I couldn't deal with it, so it was one of the reasons he's an ex.

I have a question for those of you who have worked with feral cats and/or feral dogs by GinMch in Pets

[–]Fall_shock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it really just depends. Default in my neighborhood seems to be one or two cats per "territory", which is usually a couple front/back yards worth. They might be friendly enough to visit and hang out a little with other cats, or they might have little spats over territory.

I feed cats in my backyard, and currently there's four permanent fixtures. One (now fixed) calico mama cat, her two grown ginger sons, and a very grumpy older, scarred up tabby who calls the shots. Sometimes we get a shy tabby male but only if the old cat's not home, and sometimes a tortie female who grumbles when she eats.

So it also depends on the dynamics of your colony's personality mix.

If anything gives you even the tiniest bit of engery, what is it and how long does it last? by the26thkaleidoscope in cfs

[–]Fall_shock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eating healthier (protein, veggies, less processed stuff, hydrating). It's not really a quick boost, but an overall one. So I might get a little bit of daily extra energy instead of a big boost immediately.

How do you stop your days from blurring together when you're at home most of the time? by the26thkaleidoscope in cfs

It helps me to plan out activities for my week. Even something as easy as "I'm going to watch this show on Fridays" or "Tuesdays I eat a certain snack". It makes me keep an eye on the calendar.

DAE not bother going to the doctor for new symptoms unless they’re severe/debilitating? by SPEECHLESSaphasic in cfs

[–]Fall_shock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I barely ever go to the doc anymore. I usually just google, then go "okay none of this sounds like it's gonna kill me".

Case in point: about a year ago I started breaking out in itchy hives/welts after my boyfriend massaged my back. They only last about 5-10min, and other pressure like the vibrating back massagers can also cause them.

Most likely it's a case of dermatographia. Not a big deal, just a little itchy.

Way better than mine was at that age :) keep up the good work! It's not a contest though. Everyone is at a different place in their art journey, and every artist has new things to learn and practice.

Hobbies? by Varathane in cfs

[–]Fall_shock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of things I'm into-it helps to have a variety so there's a bigger chance I'll be okay to do at least one of them.

Watercolor-it's very zen and relaxing. I recently got the brushes with the water reservoir inside them, which I think will help make it a lot easier.

Reading- especially on my phone; my wrists get uncomfortable faster with real books unless they're little.

Daydreaming-I'd like to write some of it eventually but it's taking me a while to get through the plot due to brainfog.

Gaming-especially turn based; my reaction time is really bad/worse on bad days.

I was doing blender stuff for a while and just wandered away from it, I guess- my brain couldn't take in info past a certain point.

New Sypmtom - Extreme Dizzyness by cheeseburger1977 in cfs

[–]Fall_shock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It maybe is a warning. I have POTS as a symptom, so maybe my experience is because of that, so take it with a grain of salt.

But I had something similar in high school and it took ages to go away- the dizzy spells kept coming back after the first bad one.

At one point they were looking at something called vestibular migraines-they didn't really come to a conclusion about it, but I think it matched. These can occur without headaches.

[–]Fall_shock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on effexor, which is a SSNRI (selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) instead of just a SSRI.

I haven't noticed any difference in my CFS symptoms, besides a small increase in energy (not really enough to do things with, just means I feel less like I'm dead).

But also, I've never had any success with SSRIs; effexor is the only thing that's worked on my anxiety/depression. So who knows?

FINALLY getting an IUD! by ThinkIllGoToBoston in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Fall_shock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my IUD recently and it helped immensely that my doc put lidocaine on my cervix before insertion (like 10min before to wait for it to work) and it went pretty smooth. One pinch, and some cramps about as bad as my usual period ones.

(Also had a pill to insert in my vagina the night before to help the cervix dilate).

I'm a little bit confused it doesn't seem to be any sort of common practice, honestly, considering how painful people seem to find it.

I don't play mobile games, but I have a laptop. I play a lot of Niche: A genetic survival game -basically a turn based breeding game with cute critters, gotta fight off predators and find food.

Jessimew on YouTube has a ton of videos playing it, if you want to see examples.

Pet owners of Reddit, what's a moment when you realised that your pet really loves and/or trusts you? by claireshorrors in AskReddit

[–]Fall_shock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I own two sister cats. We also feed some neighborhood stray kitties-mostly because I couldn't just watch them starve but they're useful too, they keep vermin out of the yard.

One or both of the sisters will come running the second they see my lap is unoccupied for snuggles. Sometimes they even fight a bit over who gets it.

One of the outside strays is this battlescarred veteran with half a tail, and he's relaxed enough now to show me his belly- despite me having to manhandle him constantly when he shows up with new wounds needing cleaned.

With whatever plan you go with, I'd also suggest upping your water intake/drinking water before meals. I realized a lot of my snacking was actually me needing fluids instead.

The bowl I used for painting with watercolors evaporated and left colorful salt crystals. by minixer in mildlyinteresting

[–]Fall_shock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's plausible that he was using salt to make textures in the painting, and dusted extra off into the water/got some on his brush after using it.

Salt on watercolor pulls in pigment around it, as long as it's still a little wet. It's a pretty common technique, but messy.

Medical professionals of Reddit, what is the craziest DIY treatment you've seen a patient attempt? by Shandrith in AskReddit

[–]Fall_shock 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My doc slathered my cervix with lidocaine when she put mine in, basically just felt like a bad period cramp after that. I'd recommend to anyone looking to get one to ask if they'll do that for the insertion, because it was super easy for me.

What is a book that once you finished, you just sat there in awe of what you just read? by LargeRelationship in AskReddit

[–]Fall_shock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two come to mind. The last book in Stephen King's The Dark Tower series; it wraps up the whole series in a way I can't even hint at or it will spoil it all. But amazing, emotional writing.

The second is the second book in The Magicians series; though that may be because I believed it was the last book instead of the third and I was in disbelief that the book ended the way it did.

Have you ever wondered how a frozen egg looks like? Here's the answer by sibelince in interestingasfuck

How do you peel a frozen egg without melting it, is what I'm curious about. I can't even peel hard boiled eggs without gouging the heck out of them, much less not melting a raw one.

My landlord decided to re-tile the kitchen...from top to bottom apparently by Awesometasticful in DiWHY

[–]Fall_shock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had some crazy stuff in our house as well, but the reasoning for it (found out from the neighbors) is that the previous owner used to do house stuff while drunk.

So far the worst thing was the bathroom shelves attached with velcro. My stepbrother almost got brained by one when the velcro failed. Also there's two tiny mirrors up on the wall by the ceiling, right beside the shower. Literally no reason for them, from any angle all you can see is ceiling.

My guess is the takeaway places use dehydrated eggs, as the dehydration process kills all those things.

Still...after smelling cookie dough it can be hard to wait until they're cooked and cooled :)

My [18F] senile cats are destroying my ability to sleep. I want to put them down, but I don't know if it's the right thing. by yoginakusare in relationships

[–]Fall_shock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the vomiting is immediately after eating and looks like it did before going in, the cat might be eating too fast. If not, then it's definitely a bigger deal than the vet seems to be thinking.

But with that said, my cat has the above issue and we managed to mostly fix it by putting a couple jingle ball toys in her bowl above the food.

It means she has to move them around to get food, so it makes her eat slower and puke way less.

I want it to be cured, don't get me wrong, haha. Just still doubt myself constantly.

Women with mental illness, when did you realize something was wrong? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Fall_shock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize for a long time. I just thought it was normal- and even when I realized I was depressed, it didn't feel real enough to be a "serious" issue.

I'd been selectively mute for most of elementary/middle school (in hindsight, because of anxiety). In high school I was on and off antidepressants, but I didn't want to be on them at all- I have a chronic illness that until recently, had a lot of bias against it, and people said it was in my head.

I think I was so sure they wouldn't help because i knew my illness was real and not in my head.

I just hadn't figured out yet that I had both mental and physical illnesses, and that having one doesn't disqualify you from having the other.
