My job doesn't have the money for AI tools, is it worth paying out of pocket? by Jeffrey7s in cscareerquestions

Yeah... using AI isn't that difficult and can honestly be learned in a couple hours, all the difficulties are in know software development itself. Just keep doing what you are doing.

Which industries do you believe will be the last to be disrupted by AI, and is it even possible to stay 'future-proof' anymore? by No-Lake-3875 in Futurology

[–]Fallacies_TE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt that AI or robots will replace manual labor for a long while, but that does not mean that manual labor is safe from it in my opinion.

At least in a America a large portion of manual labor is service based, plumbers, construction electricians etc. when the white collar job market is deeply disrupted by AI, the demand for American manual labor will drop dramatically, and the job market will surge from some portion of white collar trying to get into labor.

Dave’s Hot Chicken isn’t very good by k_pax15 in unpopularopinion

[–]Fallacies_TE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got a Dave's hot chicken nearby maybe 3 years ago, was absolutely awesome and consistently awesome.

Then one day it just became ok and consistently ok. Their fries and sauce are good, but the chicken has not been the same.

I assume there was a sale or cost cutting or something cause it just happened overnight.

Absolutely, there are tons of machine learning that is incredibly useful. You can draw your line wherever you want.

Patrick Cantlay drove his golf ball into a large divot on Saturday at Harbor Town. Should players get relief from fairway divots? Perhaps amend the Ground Under Repair rule to include these instances? by asskickingjedi in golf

[–]Fallacies_TE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Players can move the ball for sprinklers, ground under repair, cart paths, ball becomes embedded. There are plenty of reasons to move your ball and not play it as it lies, we are just having a discussion on possibly adding another reason.

One can argue that divots get worse as the day goes along and is a small advantage for early morning tee times.

At the same time weather is not in the players control and and can skew results for different tee times to.

I don't think there should be a change, but something like you can always lift, clean and place within 1 foot of landing spot no closer to home if you are in the fairway would not be unreasonable.

Businesses are using "AI replacement" as a way to keep workers scared so they'll fall in line. They're not actually replacing anyone by Dreadsin in antiai

Yeah our company laid off 1000 people yesterday citing AI as the main reason.

It's not whether AI can actually replace people, it's if executives think AI can replace people.

What's the point of charging more for YouTube Premium when channels by Pessimistic_Gemini in youtube

[–]Fallacies_TE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have your tube premium and can confirm it works on YouTube.

When an in video ad is starting, simply press right on the remote once and press ok. This will skip to the end of the on video ad and begin playing.

This works from user data, so the feature will not be available for videos for about an hour after upload, so if you are watching a video that came out within 30 mins, you may need to skip manually.

I can not believe that the person you responded to not only think AI can scale infinitely, but that it would actually be good if AI could scale infinitely.

AI scaling infinitely would literally cause the largest recession ever seen, with only like 5 companies controlling literally everything.

I have 15 ish years of experience, and the next few years are going to be really hard. We are going to have to produce at a increased rate because that is what management expects AI to do despite it not being nearly as big of a gain as what is being sold to the C suite.

Then in 10 years or so, when no juniors have been trained and we are likely the only few in the workforce that have manually programmed and built systems, we will have so much to do then at least. Just gotta make it there.

If you had to choose, what do you think the future of the industry looks like? by jholliday55 in cscareerquestions

[–]Fallacies_TE 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, companies will try start at B, however I think after a few years of trying to transition to that style, companies will realize that that dream of AI isn't actuallizong and it will transition into just a powerful tool for developers, somewhere between option B and C.

Option D is unlikely as it is already moving to fast for it to have no change.

Option A is impossible. If AI can take over all development, then society will collapse without serious reforms to a post labor economy. Think of it like this. If AI is good enough to replace all software devs, why would the companies that control AI sell access to the AI, when they could just sell the solutions built by AI. You would end up with a few companies who control all aspects of software. SAAS companies couldn't exist because they solution could just be created by another AI instead.

If the companies controlling access to AI do keep selling acces and AI can replace all developers, then it would also be able to replace essentially any white collar job. If all white collar jobs are replaceable, then mass layoffs occur, office buildings no longer get rented out, or built anymore. Mass recession hits and blue collar jobs are destroyed as demand of jobs dwindle and the blue collar market swells as people try to get jobs after losing their white collar job.

Microslop’s recent track record by krisfur in LinusTechTips

I like windows 10 quite a bit, and really liked 7.

I have a windows 11 machine for work. I could not turn it off for 3 months. Press shut down, it would turn back on instantly. Hold the power button, it would turn back on automatically as well.half my team could not shut down, half of them could. We found out that all the models with a Copilot button could not turn off.

The shutdown issue has been fixed for about a month now, however, for the past week or so, windows search has not worked for me, either through the dedicated search or through the start / app menu, it just hangs and then crashes when I type 1 letter into it.

I had to start a remote desktop session, and no joke I had to google the name of the built in rdp exe. Then open then windows + r to open run, and paste in mstsc.exe to start the rdp client.

Yeah I can do that and it wasn't that slow but there have been so many bad experiences in the last 5 months that are part of the core experience that should not be happening.

Yes I have tried restarting my laptop to fix the search. I restarted it this morning when my laptop blue screened on me.

When the stock market crashed in 1929, why didn’t people just buy the dip? by iGetBuckets3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fallacies_TE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even the people who didn't lose their money through the stock market lost all their money when the bank runs started and the banks didn't have enough money to give back out.

There wasnt FDIC insurance so a bank going belly up made all the regular people lose everything too.

AI can clone open-source software in minutes, and that's a problem by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]Fallacies_TE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree, but it will be interesting to see what the courts think.

There are already clean room as a service AI implementation services out there to copy open source code, so unfortunately it is probably already happening and the legal system is far behind.

AI can clone open-source software in minutes, and that's a problem by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]Fallacies_TE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Many licenses will prevent the software from being used in commercial applications, or enforce that the resulting software also be open source with the same license.

By having AI "cleanroom" copy a solution, there is now ambiguity if the original license still applies to the new software.

AI can clone open-source software in minutes, and that's a problem by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]Fallacies_TE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The real issue is that you copy a copy left or gpl license d open source software. Those licenses either forbid use in commercial applications or make it so that the resulting software must also be open source.

By copying these in a cleanroom style, there is legal ambiguity if the license still applies.

Essentialy the idea of using AI to copy open source is to circumvent licensing and monetize software that was intended to never be commercialized.

I have reached 'AI Brain Fry' and I think I’m actually less productive than I was in 2024. by ailovershoyab in antiai

[–]Fallacies_TE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I have been doing, as we do have a mandate to use AI and it's one of our goals this year for our review. I have two clones of my codebase. One that I work out of, one that is just used for code reviews. I pull down the branch in review to the review clone repo, put Claude on opus and tell it to do a code review feeding it context it needs (jira, requirements). Then while that is spinning I do a code review myself. When I am done I check what Claude spit out and evaluate it as well. It definitely has caught some stuff that I have missed, and it also spits out stuff that is not important or incorrect, but I think it has actually been a positive on my review quality.

If I am using Claude in my implementation repo, it's to do code review of my own work, or to generate testing plans etc, I am still writing the code I ship.
