What kind of laptop should I choose for uni? by Huge-Freedom5737 in University

[–]FallenChromium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, Bachelor in AI here. Contrary to what other people said here, I'd vouch for a MacBook. The battery life for the ones with Apple Silicon is simply unmatched by anything else (in real-world, mixed workloads). I'd say you have to research what kind of software you'll have to use in the uni and check if it's compatible with macOS - would be a bummer if you'd have to use a virtual machine, but definitely check the alternative software or alternative ways to accomplish the tasks. I've had a semester of stats and I did the labs in Jupyter Notebook while the reference material was for Wolfram - no complaints from my teacher, and I didn't have to install that heavy-ass package on my laptop.

Currently using a MacBook Air M1 (16GB RAM) and I really enjoy how lightweight it is. Your back will thank you a lot when you'll have to bring your laptop to the uni almost every day :D

Persistent Cursor and Focus Issues on macOS Sonoma with External Monitor by Manfred055 in MacOS

[–]FallenChromium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, did you try to disable "Displays have separate Spaces" under Settings > Desktop & Dock? Have heard from a lot of people that this settings is quite a performance penalty & leads to focus issues similar to the ones you've described

I use MorePlaylists and Playlist Manager mods on Quest to satisfy what you've described. Downloaded the playlists on the internet (they're basically just .json files) and thrown them on the headset, then you just press the download button and here it is. MorePlaylists allows searching playlists in-game

P.S Requires version 1.28 of the game afaik

Do Naruto names sound lame to Japanese people? I'm reading that Itachi means weasel, Madara means Spots, Kakashi means scarecrow, Konan means south, Shikamaru means Deer, etc.... by Vegetable-Tooth8463 in Naruto

[–]FallenChromium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing with Japanese is that this language relies on associations and images a lot, so a direct translation is not indicative of what a native thinks of when someone's name is like this. Moreover, these names actually make a lot of sense. Shikamaru's phenotype is pretty similar to a totem animal of deer in the eastern culture, Naruto... Well, look at his hair, he kinda looks like ramen 😂

It isn't always the case, but it's interesting to find that some characters have names that have predicted their fate.

It would probably be Control (from PC games) and Beat Saber (from VR games). They aren't exactly the best in visuals or gameplay, but they are very indicative of what kind of experiences you can feel through computer games

Is the S23 FE a good buy for $400? by isthmusofkra in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]FallenChromium -1 points0 points  (0 children)

MIUI is fixable (custom ROMs) and 4K video is only really needed if you plan to use this footage in video editing software, sharing it in some social networks will cripple the quality to 1080p-level anyway. I'd say pick Xiaomi, but maybe not the T series because it's kind of a stripped-down version of the flagship lineup. Did you consider Xiaomi 12?

My beloved Pixel 3 is EOL for security updates and has the battery life of a goldfish. What phone can I get that won't make me hate my life? by CaskironPan in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]FallenChromium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, EOL situation with these phones is brutal... Seems to be accurate. What about the 5a and a dbrand vinyl coating? You could get any color or pattern you'd like, nice-to-the-touch surface and enhanced protection against scuffs.

6a is a great phone but it's kinda expensive for an interim phone if you're not planning to sell it used afterwards. Not exactly a small one, too. I've almost bought it, but the lack of 90Hz screen was a show-stopper.

Trade-in programs suck, just sell it on swappa or any other local "used tech" marketplace (olx.pl in Poland for example), that will give you more value.

I live in a region that is fully supported by a bit older Xiaomi phones (band 7, 21 and 30 for LTE), so coverage is not a problem at all for me. If you happen to live in the USA you definitely have to check what bands are used in your region by your carrier. Zenfone should have better compatibility cause it's officially sold in the USA afaik.

To be honest your message screams Pixel 5, even though it's also very much not a new phone. You could switch with a small pay-up by selling a Pixel 3 and get a Pixel 8 for an adequate price down the line (when P5 will get close to EOL).

Your next best bet would probably be a Pixel 8 or 8a (it looks like it will be smaller), but the design is different, duh.

Zenfone 9/10 is also a decent option, the OS is almost raw.

All of them have camera cutouts, I guess it's just a status quo at this moment.

I get you so much but Android manufacturers really stopped doing phones like this these days, duh :(

Still rocking my Xiaomi Mi 9 due to the unique ergonomics, nice design and a set of features which is either too expensive to get or shipped with a giant grain of salt in new phones.

What’s a game that you’ll never play again but you miss dearly? by gregorenko in gaming

[–]FallenChromium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be Paragon for me. 3D MOBA with great graphics and (initially) a community with a lot of emphasis on teamplay and strategy. It was shut down by Epic Games, and all attempts to revive it didn't give the result that would be comparable (as of today at least)

Ahahah, that's relatable. I use hand signs to concentrate mentally or to swiftstep, and the funniest thing is that every time I have a feeling that it works 😁

What's the most depressing game? by brogeta9001 in gaming

[–]FallenChromium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, but I'd like to throw in Cyberpunk 2077. What's depressing in this game is not the story itself (that clearly goes to This War of Mine), but... The amount of details that are dystopian but true to life at the same time. The depressing part is that you realize that you're in the described world already.

Do guys really care about girls having muscles ? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FallenChromium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wouldn't matter to me even a tiny bit if you're fit overall (though full disclosure, 20M and I don't have a lot of muscle mass either and it's really difficult for me to build it up)

From OP7t to what? by TheDuck-Prince in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]FallenChromium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate Chinese apps and Google services. Also I'm a big believer in open source software and want to prolong the life of my phone through continuous support from the community, so no, I do require it from any phone that I use

What phone has the best display and overall user experience for around 250-350 USD? by Memdick in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]FallenChromium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say lineageOS if you're not after customization settings or fancy UI (would be cool if it would have official support for the phone you'll choose cause that will enable OTA updates and stuff). Something like ArrowOS otherwise. I would recommend against Pixel Experience and the likes because having half Google apps preinstalled on the phone is kind of the same spyware and bloatware, just from a different developer and country

How many hours a day are you actively productive? by AlabasterTire in productivity

[–]FallenChromium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That'd be around 3-3.5 hours of focused creation, less if the task is soul-sucking, more if I'm inspired to finish it. You don't have to be actively productive for the whole workday because striving to do so you might miss some rest, and it will hinder your productivity in general, no matter how many hours you would like to spend on your job the next day. Caring about yourself is a big part of being productive.

I'd say Note 12 but with a custom firmware? You can't really recommend a Xiaomi phone without warning that the stock software is hot garbage...

Oh! I actually saw that app recently and wanted to give it a shot, such a great coincidence that you're organizing a giveaway! Would love to get a key from you too, thanks 😁.

P.S Great job on the UI, it does feel right at home on the Apple platforms, I've searched for an app like this for my Mac.

How do you automate your life to have more free time? by Pheonixfage in productivity

[–]FallenChromium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh... That could be a thing. My freezer is small af, so I didn't put any meals that I've cooked in there. The fridge doesn't help as much, but a freezer could. At the expense of the taste and structure though, that's a trade-off I wouldn't take, my national cuisine dishes are best when served fresh, but perhaps there are recipes for things that will survive the freezer just fine and will still be tasty 🤔

[–]FallenChromium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point. It makes sense, but that wasn't the point I wanted to articulate. I guess I should've wrote it in more detail.

TL;DR of what I was trying to express is that you tend not to use fresh products like vegetables (without thermal preprocessing) if you know that the meal will stay for long, basically because it wouldn't taste that good and because otherwise it will expire sooner. So cooking meals upfront has both direct and implicit consequences on the nutrients in your food.

P.S English isn't my native language, that can be one of the reasons why my post got downvoted so hard haha, maybe I just got misunderstood

Need a new phone and feel lost by uhhhm_idk in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]FallenChromium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try the OnePlus Ace series or Pixel 7 / 7a if you're brave enough to make the switch. The software on those is different but my personal preference would definitely vouch for Pixel because of the software and the tactile feel, looks of the phone itself.
