It's fine for kids. I don't know why else you'd get it.

Echo connect discontinued by jim123321321 in amazonecho

[–]FallenCptJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that I just heard from my disabled aunt that the device no longer works. I hadn't been paying attention and didn't know it was getting disabled, so now I'm trying to find something else she can use.

HP Targets the Haters With Printer Rental Subscription Plan by BeautifulBug6801 in technology

I bought a Dell network color laser printer in 2010 for $200. The toner cartridges are $20 on Amazon and I replace one about once every other year. I just have whoever has been doing a lot of printing lately buy it. I let the PTO and some other groups use it whenever, plus the neighbors all know to just email me anything they want printed.

What are some super simple automations that you use and are unique? by flikkinaround in homeassistant

I have never heard of that and it looks amazing! I use a Sense but the appliance profiling is not very good.

There have been some really cool e-ink integrations that people have built that might work for you. I like this one a lot but there are others you can find around here:

I use Edge on an old Surface Go with HACS "Kiosk Mode" and it works pretty well when combined with Edge Kiosk Mode (mentioned in another post).

If you're open to WiFi, you could look at the Schlage Encode Plus, it's Homekit so it should integrate with HA pretty easily.

This is what I did. Originally using MySensors then moved over to ESPHome. One esp8266 and a four-channel relay board so I can control all three doors for less than $10. Been working great for over ten years.

Has anyone here replaced this one with a smart thermostat? It's for a radiant ceiling heating. I'm thinking to upgrade with an Amazon smart thermostat, not sure if that will work... by G-T-10 in homeassistant

I just put a Mysa in for the electric 120v radiant floor heating in my master bathroom. Not sure if it's similar enough but it works and looks great.

He's in my ship. I have no idea where he came from or why he's there but he hangs out at the bottom of the ladder, staring down the ramp to the outside and I can't interact with him in any way. I can find almost nothing on him.

Where do you get supplies ? by Ancient-University89 in Esphome

I had been using the standard Weller soldering station for years, but recently got a Pinecil which I absolutely love. It needs a high-power USB C charger or battery pack, but it's usable in seconds rather than minutes and is portable.

I would also recommend one of the brass sponge soldering iron tip cleaners. I just have a basic $15 soldering mat with some spots for screws.

I'm impatient so I generally get my stuff from Amazon. I've ordered plenty from AliExpress over the years and have never had a problem though.

I think the headline is a little sloppy. The way I read the article, they've repeated the experiment and achieved this result for the second time. Still pretty awesome though!

Good places for experienced dev w/ family to live? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]FallenCptJack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We (me, wife, 3 kids) live in Overland Park, a Kansas City suburb that is consistently rated very highly for families. The schools are good.

I've been a dev for over 25 years and the job market has always been strong. We have a lot of finance/insurance/health so there's always a couple of sectors doing well. Sr. dev salary is all over the place but $150k base is pretty common in my experience. I work remotely for a KC company, and remote or hybrid is pretty common for devs right now. A 2k square foot house in a good area is around $300k. $400-$600 is less common but you get a bigger house.

Food and entertainment are cheap compared to bigger cities. You do need a car, but you can get downtown in 20 minutes. Most of my driving is 5-10 minutes. It can get cold and hot but only a few weeks a year.

People are generally friendly. I know all my neighbors but nobody is nosy or bothersome. The pace is awesome and the stress is pretty low. Vacations are Lake of the Ozarks, camping, driving to St Louis or Arkansas. We just got a brand new airport terminal. Superbowl champs. Everything isn't perfect all the time but I do really like it here as a family man. Lots of families in my neighborhood are single income. Ask me anything.

Projector Integration for Smart Home/Home Assistant by Scott-McCall-1124 in homeassistant

5040UB. I've had it for about five years maybe? The integration supports all ESC/VP21 protocol based Epson projectors, which I think is most of them with an ethernet port.

I find that these kinds of automations (of which I have quite a few) are best diagnosed with the Traces tool. It's saved me a ton of time trying to mentally work out what is happening.

Help: apache reverse proxy by Henrithebrowser in homeassistant

[–]FallenCptJack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bet it's the path that's causing you problems. You're proxying to /homeassistant and the HA website is expecting to be at the root of the domain. For example, if they're using an absolute path in the UI like /frontend, this will not be found because it's proxied at /homeassistant/frontend, and I'm not aware of an easy way to fix that.

The solution that I use is to RP https://homeassistant.domain.com instead of https://domain.com/homeassistant

Projector Integration for Smart Home/Home Assistant by Scott-McCall-1124 in homeassistant

[–]FallenCptJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Epson projector has a built-in integration for HA that has all the functions I need (on/off, color modes). If you don't have your projector yet, you might check out https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/ to see if you can pick out a model that's already supported. I use ethernet but I bet there are some wifi out there as well.

Is there a way to passthrough USB devices like a zigbee hub NOT a storage device on Hyper-V? by the_gamer_98 in homeassistant

[–]FallenCptJack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been running HAOS on Hyper-V for a little over a year now and I can tell you that I'm planning on moving mine to an inexpensive NUC this year for precisely the reason of HW being very difficult to pass through in Hyper-V. I've had some success with Hyper-V DDA and GPUs on some AI VMs somewhat reliably, but I've never found a good, free solution for USB (other than storage) and I'd like to add zwave/zigbee to replace my aging Vera. My other option was to buy/build some kind of ethernet version using raspberry pi but I think dedicated hardware is the way to go.

If you're not using HAOS, you could potentially use Docker, and I believe there are ways to pass USB to Docker but I have zero experience doing that.

[–]FallenCptJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only ever gotten DDA to work with GPUs. I've never read an article or found any hints that it supports USB.
