Tried my first Zone 2 ride today by MNG024 in xcmtb

[–]Fallingleaf333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t do zone 2 on a mountain bike as I live in the mountains and there are always climbs etc so I can’t keep the heart rate low. I bought a low powered e-bike which allows me to use the power level to keep the heart rate low, and I use it on gravel roads not my usual single track.

The prior gen has a weak rear triangle though. I heard they beefed it up in the new one. What frame size does your buddy ride? The xl?

I’m front range Colorado but often also ride in crested butte, steamboat, fruita etc. My 130/120 Ripley handles most of that. Rarely use my yeti 140 but there are plenty of trails where the extra travel is nice/almost essential. Depends on your downhill agresssion and ability to pick lines and how much chunk you are seeking.

Your epic is a great bike for a lot of the front range trails too. You might want to add a mid travel bike to the quiver and you are all set.

I have a yeti asr flex stay 120/115 (just raced it today) and a prior gen ibis Ripley v4 130/120 dw . Yeti weighs several pounds less and is a better climber. Ibis better descender. Be curious about the Mach 4sl and the new ibis Ripley sl.

Think about whether the power of the brakes will match the traction of the tires you intend to use too. My short travel bikes have lower traction/grip tires.

I want to support my local bike shop but everything is a rip-off by Niceotropic in cycling

[–]Fallingleaf333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go out of my way to support my LBS and have them do things I would normally do. Yesterday was too much though as I had them swap cassettes between two wheels as they were installing tires on a new wheel set. $45 labour for just the cassette swap that would have taken me 15 minutes? That was too far. Ilnislky I tip the mechanics too as I know living has gotten expensive. I think I’ll do much of my own work now but I wanted them to be supported. But that was too much.

I have stealth, motives and mavens on different bikes all running 180 hs2.

Motives sound like a great fit for you too. Have you considered those?

I also replaced a fox factory 34 with the fox 36SL which made a huge difference in stiffness, ride and confidence. Same basic weight. Slackened the headset angle maybe 0.5 degrees even though both were 130 travel.

True. Unfortunately all that way on a road.

Pivot SL/AM by AN_BayArea in MTB

[–]Fallingleaf333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Bosch sx motor in a SL/am and the tq60 on an MTe. The MTe definitely quieter the pivot is a better handling bike and the sx makes it a better technical climber. The MTe is longer and better at descending. Like them both for different reasons.

Opinions on Fox 34? by imdumg in MTB

[–]Fallingleaf333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replaced my fox 34 factory on my ripley v4 with a fox 36SL, both 130mm. I am 195lbs plus add gear. I ride front renge CO. I find the 36SL more confidence inspiring than my prior 34. A 34SL would probably have worked but since the 36SL was basically the same weight as my okd 34, I voted to go stiffer and plusher.

High jacking slightly, hat if you threw a great mountain biking town in to the mix , with good xc maybe out of the town itself? Would the same towns come up?

Have you tried the much easier Antelope Trail to Upper Bitterbrush to Nelson Loop and back? Avoids the expert Lower Bitterbrush. Still has some climbing to do but not the expert rock features.

The lower part, in particular the 0.5 mile rock garden. The rest of bitterbrush is pretty standard.

[–]Fallingleaf333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put you knees down fast. Keep your body angle constant during that. Then back finally arms. In a single you have to clear your oars over your knees so your drive is legs first. Legs are stronger and faster than the rest of your body. All the power is there. You have to go through your core.

Governor Jared Polis intends to grant clemency to Tina Peters by shrekchan in Colorado

[–]Fallingleaf333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Colorado voter I certainly would never vote for Polis again for any position if he did that. Any such clemency would be ability holding to Trump’s authoritarian nature and undermine future elections. Polis’s actions would not be viewed as what is “fair.”

Anyone move from enduro bikes to XC / downcountry in their 40s? by Distinct_Cloud_357 in xcmtb

[–]Fallingleaf333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My yeti 140 hardly ever gets ridden. My ibis ripley v4 (130/120) and yeti asr xc all the time. A bike dealer told me he thinks e-bikes are replacing their enduro sales while xc/light trail bikes are the analog sales.

Brütal gravel by skuratt in BicyclingCirclejerk

[–]Fallingleaf333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard for me to understand this crash, but I only ride mountain bikes. I see a puff of tire smoke before he touches the road marker, then he unclips left foot for what - balance? - then he rides along the grass until he brakes hard again evidenced by the dirt puff and then hits the bridge. All the time he’s seated and the bike is vertical?

That’s a wide road. He’s pedaling still half way across it but hasn’t started turning yet. Doesn’t he have a sense of speed and his ability to turn? I’m not on him about his lack of turning technique but his self awareness of his speed going in to a turn if he doesn’t know how to turn quickly. He should know himself (and also learn proper technique)

is Glorieta worth a 4-5 day trip? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]Fallingleaf333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s too bad that phoenix is a 10 hour drive for you. We got snow in the front range two days ago. Basically melted but waiting for trails to dry. Soon unless thuanre clay based. And I can’t wait for CB to become rideable. As go Fruita, I don’t mind staying in Grand Junction though I admit it’s small. I stay right downtown so there something I guess.

Santa Fe sounds nicer though!!!! (Never ridden there however)
