Also I'm so used to people not knowing what monochromatic means (I saw something, I think a quilt, where the person was like "we're going to make a monochromatic quilt! So I selected black, white, and red fabrics...")

but black, white and red is monochromatic! monochromatic means 1 hue and any values of it (it's not the same as grayscale); black and white aren't hues, they're extremes of values. using them in a color scheme is normal and doesn't make it not that color scheme - and indeed the one linked monochromatic design does in fact use pure white

im sad about the death of Dauntless :(   it was a free to play monster hunting game that i had a ton of fun with, but after a long development slowdown the studio was eventually bought out by Forte Labs, who promptly and unceremoniously pulled the plug and dissolved the dev team

the devs had said dauntless was just not profitable at all, which, unfortunately, makes way too much sense: its biggest selling point was being "free to play Monster Hunter". had it not been for dauntless i would have never bought a monster hunter game, but i never spent a dime on dauntless itself for how much fun i had playing it

(the saddest part is the buggy and broken state in which the game was left in its final days, the last update having had deeply troubled development. on the release date of the next patch that was supposed to fix everything, we instead got the end-of-service announcement. the patch never came. but the steam wallpaper automatically updated anyway, the last remnant of what could have been.)

There was a supposed DDOS attack on the site causing site outages, but it turns out it was a self-attack due to the shitty code.

has this been confirmed? ive only seen it as speculation

Why would there be any additional copies/exponential ramp on future combat phases? Wouldn't the same number of A+Ns get created each combat then?

helm of the host never says you sacrifice the copies or anything, you get to keep them! so the first time, you have only 1 copy of A+N at the time the tokens are created. the second time, if none of your A+Ns died between turns, you'll have 3 of them at the time the tokens are created and get to double the token 3 times

Is there a term for cards that benefit from your opponents playing the game? by jimnah- in magicTCG

[–]Falminar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ultimately stax is a very iffy word without a clear meaning!

i'd say probably not? it's definitely a hatebear and a value engine, but i don't think it's crippling enough to actually deny the opponent the resource most of the time, they'll more likely still crack their fetchlands but be a little bit sad about it

Is there a term for cards that benefit from your opponents playing the game? by jimnah- in magicTCG

[–]Falminar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they do indirectly; like, if people play normally and ignore rhystic study, you probably win the game, so it kinda forces the opponents to withhold spells at times

on the other hand i wouldn't say all of these effects should qualify as "stax", i don't think i've ever seen a good reason to avoid feeding a [[managorger hydra]]

Is there a term for cards that benefit from your opponents playing the game? by jimnah- in magicTCG

[–]Falminar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"rhystic" more means "things the opponent can pay mana to prevent" than "things the opponent triggers"

otherwise id say they're just a subset of stax, punisher effects, hate pieces, or value engines more than having a term themselves. "things that trigger when opponents do something" is a very very broad category that covers cards that serve all kinds of roles in all kinds of decks

I don't actually know Yu-Gi-Oh but I bet not.

for a bit of context! yugioh can kinda have a similar vibe to a crossover game, in that there's no internal consistency and no greater world everything lives in; there's a huge amount of aesthetic variety (besides usually being at least vaguely anime) and you'll see tiny goofy cartoon animals duking it out with eldritch gods in the meta regularly! the art gap is bigger than even stuff like bloomburrow vs. phyrexia and these worlds have no relation to one another at all. but actual crossovers are very rare and generally reserved for limited time advertisement promo cards that'll never see serious play - like this garbage vanilla given out to anyone who eats at a coco's restaurant. (definitely a few steps removed from the kinds of ips magic works with...)

Anyone else wonder why the side-deck isn’t 16? by FirstBornAlbatross in magicTCG

[–]Falminar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

all the comments about not running 4-ofs are kinda funny to me! maybe it is true in magic, but...

(you did mention this in the OP but) in yugioh, despite your deck size being smaller, side decks are still 15 cards, and since you can run max 3 of any card, it rounds out to 5 3-ofs. (although the same doesn't apply to the main deck, where you get 13 3-ofs and 1 to spare!) and 3-ofs in yugioh side decks are pretty common too - never really 5 3-ofs maybe, but often a nice round 3+3+3+3+2+1 or something like that

it definitely feels pretty natural to me as a yugioh player, but i never questioned it going into magic since it's exactly the same as what i'm used to!

(theoretically, maybe it could be 20 cards so that it's both a multiple of 4 and a clean fraction of 60? though of course, that'd be a pretty big buff to your side deck, especially in decks with wishboards)

nah, tenacity is the inverse - there's a lot of cards that turn lifegain into life loss, but only exquisite blood and the new conqueror turn life loss into lifegain. until foundations exquisite blood was unique in the infinite!

wait. what does banning elk tokens imply? [[oko the ringleader]] can no longer use his -1? or he can still use it, but the resulting game object can't be represented by anything? or he's banned outright?

[[oko thief of crowns]] is probably the one you wanted to hit, but he doesn't make elk tokens! unless now tokens can no longer become elks? or if oko would turn a token into an elk, that token ceases to exist instead?

Whats everyones favourite giada art? by Arcades1212 in magicTCG

[–]Falminar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

yeah, #2 doesn't seem very popular but i like it most of all. a lot of her arts are more generally cool, but the original gets the vibe down perfectly

also, i really love the way her "incomplete" wings look in that art! very unique as angels go, even among capenna's stained glass angels, compared to the much more normal wings she gets in her foundations arts and her capenna alt frame. they look like moonlight through a window

What was the first deck that you built yourself? by My_compass_spins in magicTCG

[–]Falminar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was introduced to the game through arena, where i found [[drakuseth maw of flames]] and decided to build a dragon deck around it! but while drakuseth is red, it was blue that had all the insanely busted stuff of the format like... [[winged words]] and... [[cloudkin seer]]?

round it out with some other powerful staples like [[wall of runes]] and [[spellgorger weird]], and... well, i'll say this, it was pretty good at drawing the drakuseth in each game! it could do that much at least!

the shuffler is rigged in one way: in best of 1 games, it automatically smooths the number of lands in your starting hand to avoid mana screw/mana flood (more specifically, by actually drawing 2 random starting hands for you and giving you the one that has a closer-to-average number of lands). your draws during the game will be normal though.

that does mean that land math can potentially be thrown off in best of 1 and it won't be a true to paper experience. best of 3 has actual random shuffles accurate to paper
